UAAP season 87

What I've learned throughout years of watching the UAAP is to never overreact and overthink opening day games. There's tons of factors involved (opening day jitters, the bright lights and cameras, full sized crowd, drums and school cheers, etc.). My personal opinion is that maybe around the 4th or 5th game, we'll get to see a more realistic state of where teams are as they stabilize their rotations and get settled down.
That said, there are still valid takeaways we can get from one game:
- Refs love to blow the whistle on opening day lol. 64 (!) total FTs combined for Ateneo and UP. Both teams sucked from the line though (19/40 for ADMU, 14/24 for UP).
- I know most people don't like him (myself included at times), but Maimai is arguably the best PG in the league right now. It was an ugly yet surprisingly efficient game from him (17 pts on 8/14 fgs, 10 asts, 7 rebs and a game-high +19). His performance this season will dictate how far UP goes as the other UP guards (Felicilda, Torres, Alarcon) are all subpar.
- Which brings me to Alarcon. Disappointing that his play has deteriorated. The shot selection is just putrid at this point.
- The QMB wingspan is legit. He'll be a headache for any team.
- Lopez is such an athletic freak. He did not attempt a three pointer in this game and continuously drove like a madman. Dunno if that could work against other teams though.
- The Bahay court vision and passing game is legit; let's see if the scoring and shot selection improves.
- Tough luck for Koon. If he misses an extended amount of time, it could be a really long season for Ateneo.
- The Ateneo frontline is a big concern. Balogun, Ong, and the undersized Porter are not the answer.Last edited by maroonforlife; 09-07-2024, 05:33 PM.

He's probably 24 now and I think the UAAP rule is you should be 24 and below before start of the season to be eligible.

LOL at the fake news peddlers here claiming JD to be 27, when he was born in 2001. He'd finish his UAAP career a few months older than 24. For what it is worth, Ange finished his UAAP career a few weeks short of 25.
And the loophole they got to use was present for years, and once discovered was quickly remedied by the UAAP. So shady as it may have been, this is partly on the UAAP. I think they could have disallowed JD's last year on the grounds of what the spirit of the rule is, but they didn't.
Either way, had JD not played this year, then it's likely Bahay stays at UP. So will there be fake news about Bahay in that scenario? Lol
