UP being allowed to field in Cagulangan and QMB this season is why I will never root for them. Karma got them last year for the Lopez issue, hope the same thing happens this year.

    • What I've learned throughout years of watching the UAAP is to never overreact and overthink opening day games. There's tons of factors involved (opening day jitters, the bright lights and cameras, full sized crowd, drums and school cheers, etc.). My personal opinion is that maybe around the 4th or 5th game, we'll get to see a more realistic state of where teams are as they stabilize their rotations and get settled down.

That said, there are still valid takeaways we can get from one game:

      - Refs love to blow the whistle on opening day lol. 64 (!) total FTs combined for Ateneo and UP. Both teams sucked from the line though (19/40 for ADMU, 14/24 for UP).
      - I know most people don't like him (myself included at times), but Maimai is arguably the best PG in the league right now. It was an ugly yet surprisingly efficient game from him (17 pts on 8/14 fgs, 10 asts, 7 rebs and a game-high +19). His performance this season will dictate how far UP goes as the other UP guards (Felicilda, Torres, Alarcon) are all subpar.
      - Which brings me to Alarcon. Disappointing that his play has deteriorated. The shot selection is just putrid at this point.
      - The QMB wingspan is legit. He'll be a headache for any team.
      - Lopez is such an athletic freak. He did not attempt a three pointer in this game and continuously drove like a madman. Dunno if that could work against other teams though.
      - The Bahay court vision and passing game is legit; let's see if the scoring and shot selection improves.
      - Tough luck for Koon. If he misses an extended amount of time, it could be a really long season for Ateneo.
      - The Ateneo frontline is a big concern. Balogun, Ong, and the undersized Porter are not the answer.

This article from Dec 2023, mentions he is 23 years old:

When the University of the Philippines made their final bow in front of thousands of Iskos and Iskas at the SMART Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday evening, only two Fighting Maroons were at the front: graduating seniors CJ Cansino and Malick Diouf. Many wondered why JD Cagulangan did not join his fellow captains in what had […]

He's probably 24 now and I think the UAAP rule is you should be 24 and below before start of the season to be eligible.

Yet you've been rooting for La Salle despite its funding from Danding Cojuangco, who used to be one of Marcos Sr.'s biggest cronies. Heck, the entire La Salle community should build a Marcos Sr. statue because all its championships from the 90s to the 2000s were funded by Marcos' dirty money. This makes most of La Salle's championships public property because it was funded by dirty money from Marcos Sr.

The real issue was about the number of playing years right? On old uaap transfer rules he should have had 1 playing year ddeducted but they found a loop hole, he enrolled in a non member school for a semester then officially to up so his playing years remained intact

Yes, this was also mentioned in the article I posted (He enrolled to St. Clare before transferring to UP). It's shady as fuck to be honest, especially coming from UP but the UAAP board should also tighten its policies, imo. Whoever is finding these loopholes for UP must have gotten a big raise already lol (from Lopez not officially getting a visa to play pro hoops to the JD case and to QMB still having a year left due to one year being scrapped due to the pandemic).

No SJ Moore in the final lineup? He returned to UST right?

                    • LOL at the fake news peddlers here claiming JD to be 27, when he was born in 2001. He'd finish his UAAP career a few months older than 24. For what it is worth, Ange finished his UAAP career a few weeks short of 25.

And the loophole they got to use was present for years, and once discovered was quickly remedied by the UAAP. So shady as it may have been, this is partly on the UAAP. I think they could have disallowed JD's last year on the grounds of what the spirit of the rule is, but they didn't.

Either way, had JD not played this year, then it's likely Bahay stays at UP. So will there be fake news about Bahay in that scenario? Lol

The poor planning was choosing Obasa over Godslove. Godslove is now shining in the US while Obasa was one and done.
