  • I'm all for the UP "over recruitment". Isn't this taking recruitment at a higher level in that higher level players are attracted to PH universities. Fact is UP won't get all of the best ones. For me, I think the mentality for this recruitment is there is still a need to match DLSUs personnel, particularly the frontcourt. Now if they don't win - it means the formula is flawed and funds may be harder to come by as the excitement wear off.

DLSU can fill that PG hole with a one and done FSA PG (but they will have to sit Agunanne). Their frontcourt defense is unmatched with Agunanne and Philips and the firepower of Policarpio and Quiambao will can make PBA teams say ouch!. Backcourt ain't weak, its just not the best in the UAAP (they have size) but they can hold their own enough to win a championship.

ADMU just had the bad luck of losing 2 starters on top of those who graduated. But in the last few years its depth was amazing with players coming in and out of Team B because of injuries and acads and still play as a top level team. They are still deep (but raw) and extremely well trained. 1 Ange Kouame away?

NU solid as ever with a business-like approach (no showbuzz!) to recruiting the top local talents and maintaining a balanced team year in year out. Maybe one superstar away?

UST is still undergoing the "process" but is already starting to be competitive starting this season. Two or three pieces away?

FEU, AdU and UE are the left behind in the UAAP but if you get them head to head with NCAA teams they can still compete so there is always that potential to move up with the right moves even with a lower budget than the above 5 schools.

Players decide on the schools to play for and are responsible for the consequences of their decisions (they are adults!).

If we want to address the issue of lack of playing time or development due to ridiculously deep teams, we can have a transfer portal (parang marketplace) to match would be transferees and schools. Then waive the residency rules because of the very limited time a player can stay in college. We can also raise the number of FSAs per team so that its not just Centers who would go up against FSAs but other positions as well.

It also doesn't help that schools are lambasted for having politician boosters. Politicians, tycoons, movie personalities and all others have skeletons in the closet. And all schools have this kind of boosters and alumni.

Oh really? I thought Femi Edu is a promising 6-foot-5 natural wingman with athleticism.

Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Because La Salle and Ateneo was different back then.. they got blue recruits yes, players back then spent 4 years playing for their school… to be perfectly clear Im not from either schools…

Imagine your team hoarding almost all Gilas players, but wasting the talent of other players in your roster. Thats why players left the squad after a year, then they spend another year of residency…

Mac Cardona was a walk in applicant, Rico Maerhoffer as well… Mike Cortez was recruited in the states the only notable players recruited back then was Yeo and Ritualo…Kiefer Ravena was a true blue Eagle, Enrico Villanueve as well… and mind you… Ateneo was nothing in the early 90 till 2000s… so don’t use this argument to depend UP’s recent player hoarding.

No it wont take recruitment to higher level. Infact it just means up is too lazy to find and develop players since all they get are ready to play kind of guys. Why do you need to match dlsu's personnel? When you already have 3-4 legitimate centers while dlsu only has the philipps bros(not counting fsas)?

as for the transfer portal, as much as i want it here, i feel like its just gonna get abused by bigger programs as well. Imagine if remogat, cortez and baclaan wouldnt need to spend residency, then what will stop these big programs from poaching star players from small schools. So whats gonna happens is whats left for thesesmall school are crumbs from the big schools. Thus competitiveness will just lessen as only the bigger program will hoard talent. Ive already seen it happen in the us ncaa. It just makes building a solid program harder for small schools.

Why are guys like Romero and Zamora mentioned to support the claim that DLSU is over recruiting when Gelo Rivero isn’t mentioned when UP’s pool is referred to. They’re of the same mold—- guys not really recruited, teams are not competing for those guys.

Ateneo has had a lot of those types of guys in their team B in their five peat years— guys willing to stay in Team B and hoping for a chance to be elevated to the UAAP roster. Like Credo for example.

Those guys are not the ones we are referring to when we criticize UP for over recruitment and you know it.

I guess arguably being the top universtiy in the country helps. As one said here, there are quite a number of UP players who take their acads seriously. However, basketball development is another thing. At 6’7 with decent mobility and good shooting, Konov has Gilas SF potential. I just hope UP doesnt stunt his development.
It does feel like UP’s interest in Konov is misdirection.

                • i can only imagine what will happen if Konov, QMB, and Tolentino suddenly enter the UAAP. It's going to be so exciting and it's going to be a much higher level of play compared to the PBA's pang-purok level of play.

The PBA's had some systematic innovations, like with Cone's Ginebra, this year's TerraFirma (at least in the All-Filipino), and even this year's Phoenix. Also, talent level is higher (being the pro league, and FG% is higher.

What I will give to the UAAP is the energy on defense, timeliness of rotations, and potential of players for FIBA play. Good system of Ateneo also, even if the shots don't fall.

Tab Baldwin vs Tim Cone is a treat.

Only Konov can play immediately since he is an incoming freshman, while QMB and Sage need to undergo residency after having played college ball already.

                          • if indeed that the Dylan Harper sweepstakes are apparently true then for me personally that would be a game changer.

that would really raise the bar as far as college recruiting war are concern.

imagine a 5-star prospects and a potential first rounder.

he will become the biggest catch in the history of Philippine basketball as far as college landscape are concern.
