This is how youth and collegiate basketball works in the Philippines, and it’s quite complicated. When Coach Franz of La Salle and Coach Eric of NU managed the Youth Team, nearly half of the players were poached by them. As a result, other teams became hesitant to lend their players, fearing they would be recruited or poached.

As much as I’d like Coach Topex or Coach Gold to lead Batang Gilas, their teams are notorious for poaching talent from other schools. It’s likely that top high school players from other UAAP and NCAA teams would be prevented from joining the Batang Gilas team for fear of being recruited.

In my opinion, similar to what Japan has done, we should consider recruiting a foreign coach to manage our youth teams. This could bring fresh perspectives and advanced techniques to improve our program.

Almost half of this Japan team was beaten by the complete lineup of U16 PH last U16 Asia Cup. It is crazy how the system of Josh heavily relies on a 1 player, losing that 1 player makes the team incompetent af, there is no plan B at all.
