If its a choice between a raw 6 footer and an equally raw and bano 6-10, id chose 6-10 kid all day..We needed all the tall guys for our Gilas Seniors, 6 footer SG are dime a dozen. Look at the previous batch of U18, Pre was left out in favor of Alao and Romero, compare mo sila ngayon.
geo chiu was considered raw but in comparison was better than yap and owen around that age.

    • Tiff become useful for U18 Girls at 13 cuz she was used by Heidi Ong...Will Joke chose a 13 yo for U18 competition probably not..

Granting Yap and Calanasan are raw, are Chua Arejola and Banal any better albeit smaller? Let's not talk about Carino who is a start if their Kiddies Team ..

Ang sa kin lang naman, since basically Arejola , Banal and Chua are useless anyway, why not use 11th and 12th slot to for young developing Bigs....Carino, Yap and Calinasan can have 1 U16 and 2 U18 stints ...Yung 3 guards were just for the vacation

We saw Chui at 17 year old already ..Let's see once the two at reach 17 to have better comparison...Again my point, we wasted the slots on rich sub 6 ft guards instead if developing young bigs ..it may not even be Yap or Calanasan, Carino at 15 is better than De Lianio...Maybe Tyler Reyes could have been given the spot over the guards

            This.

For context there was a 6'10 born 2010 from Puerto Rico named James Rivera who got in the lineup in the 2023 U19 iirc, they did not use him. Oliver Roux, the 7'7 giant from Canada made the team in the 2021 U19 and they did not use him either. Both of them got into the lineup for the sake of exposure. Both were undeserving but serves the purpose of having an investment by giving them those experience.

Yuto Kawashima, the guy who destroyed the U16 2022 Gilas got into the U19 lineup of Japan in the 2021 U19 WC at the age of 15-16. He did not become useful there either but he got the exposure he needed for the next edition that results into an U17, U19 WC. He was also the MVP of U16 2022 Fiba Asia. In those U16, U18 Asia Editions, Japan made the finals both. Right now he is one of Japan's upcoming star with Akira Jacobs.

Exposure is needed, it would give those raw player an eye-opener.

So if the coach is going to put another guards for the 10-12 slot and won't use them anyway, why not give the slot to the raw bigs?

This Josh Reyes also had the chance to cap James Sanderson who has multiple D1 offers and chose not to.

He has a chance to put all the best talent available but he did not do it.

By that angle, we can literally say he is a trash coach. Let alone his coaching.

I could be wrong but I don't think Calanasan has a big Gilas potential in the future even if you expose him to numerous international stint. But the point is, Josh could have had added a couple more capable 6'5s so he could slide 6'4 Daja and Morales to 3 giving the team more ceiling and development for the 2 for future Gilas stint.

Other teams come to mind were the 1992 squad (Espino and Duremdez), 1990 RP-Moldex with Marlou Aquino and EJ Feihl

The 1989 team with Olsen Racela, Jun Limpot and EJ Feihl. The 1986 talented team with Magsanoc and Paras. And that team also had Bong Alvarez, Nelson Asayrono.

Please feel free to correct me with those names.
1986- Zaldy Realubut ( 1990 Beijing Asian Games)
1990- Boyet Fernandez ( 2002 Busan Asian games reserve)
                1989- Vergel Meneses

                • Just wondering, Letran HS is arguably the best high school team in the country and no one from the team got on the U18.

That's the reason why Daep and Borja were tnit n the team as well as Roma from Ateneo Cebu. .When the day of the tryouut was held, it coincide with the Finals of NCAA Jr's and Letran Squires and UPHD Jr's were playing in the finals. Same also in the case of Ateneo Cebu who were playing in the NBTC qualifiers. Of course Josh took itas disunterest and lack of committment in the players...Ganyan si Coach Josh

                    • What is truly disturbing is that the father and son, PROVEN BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT as garbage coaches, onboard a lot of small tourists pretending to be good ballers, and never commits a minimum of SIX 6'5 and taller reasonably competent forwards and centers that are absolutely required for international games. Because they are supposed to play basketball, a big man's game, and not chinese checkers.

I see only about four or five competent local coaches and, as you most probably know, are all college and not pro coaches.

Indeed, some pba teams look much better than they should because they have players who are much better than other pinoy players. For example, even joke seyer can win championships with a deep team like sanmig, and with a healthy fajardo. In the same manner, no pro coach in the vast universe can win serious games with the youth crews formed by joke seyer. I honestly have great difficulty calling father and son as coaches.

Winning against asean youth and senior teams CAN NEVER BE CONSIDERED EVENTFUL, as asean teams are forgetable teams that their mothers can never be proud of. What is the fiba ranking again of u17/u16 philippine, vietnam, indonesian or thai teams? Not enough? What about myanmar, kampuchean or laotian nts?

Winning against asean baller nts is like shooting fish in a barrel. You cant even unsee the awful, awful quality of asean balling. Compare that with the recent smashing by a streetball composition called the team usa, which easily smashed serbia. You absolute must have players with superior size, athleticism and 2-way abilities because even with near-zero team practices, they will ALWAYS look good

                      • You want the completely useless pbs to be at least minimally useful, and to not shamelessly embarrass the philippines in international balling???

All it has to do is to never, ever send a youth nt team half of which are at least 6'5 and taller. There are many good local and filfor players already at 6'3-6'5. At the very least, it forces local coaches to play a big man's game with big men, as they must. Bansot balling is okay in the ncaa, mpbl and pba as these are entertainment groups.

Did anyone even see what a pinoy skilled and strong twin tower of 6'11 and 7'2 can accomplish in international games??? It is most definitely not brownlee, newsome or a thompson that can create consistent advantages for pinoys. Only the most ignorant fans cannot notice that. It was always the skilled pinoy bigs who are the key to future success. Ask tim cone what will happen if he puts a healthy kouame, aj edu, PLUS even a boatwright or qmb, to support the twin towers, EVEN WITHOUT BROWNLEE.
