Our lack of dependable bigs in 2022 FIBA Asia Cup definitely hurt us. Remember, Kai, Junmar, AJ Edu weren't available. Ange Kouame was injured at that time. We were left with a thin & soft Poy Erram & the raw & slow Geo Chiu to man the middle.
Yeah, Dwight got replaced with Parks in that Asia Cup. Still, we lacked the bigs.

After Erram and Chiu, our bigs who were left were Carl Tamayo and Kevin Quiambao, who were tweeners best left to play 4 at the time, and not really strong interior defenders (although Carl is a good post defender).

Fans will get a healthy dose of PBA action with six days a week of games in the Governors’ Cup starting Aug. 18 to open the league’s 49th season.

      - 6 gamedays a week (Tuesday-Sunday)
      - Governors' Cup to end 17 November at the latest to make room for the window, which is from 21 to 24 November
      - Commissioner's Cup to start in November, with a break for the February window
      - All-Filipino is from March to July
Also, 17 November is too close to the 21st. Only 4 days away. The key players in the PBA contingent (Newsome, June Mar, Japeth, JB, CJ, Scottie) are all on title contenders. We risk getting too tired and maybe too unprepared (lack of chemistry) to face NZ by then.

On the other hand (biglang ganoon noh!!!), our non-PBA Gilas players (Kai, Dwight, Tamayo, Edu, Quiambao, Amos) will be available about 10 days before our 1st game of the 2nd window because the B-league & the KBL would take a 2-week break to give way to the 2nd window 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers.

Let's just pray that both Ginebra & SMB won't make it to the Governor's Cup finals so that Junmar, CJ Perez, Iskati Thompson, Malonzo (hope he's healthy by that time) & Brownlee can join Gilas practice about 10 days before our 1st game in the 2nd window.

Me kinda thinks they should send a B team for Asia Cup Qualifying windows comprising of young players. Just send the A Team (w Junemar, Malonzo, JB, Skati, Perez and Newsome) to FIBA Asia Cup and then the A+ Team (to be determined) to World Cup.

'B' team can be the non-PBA players plus some youngsters they might wanna try (Kai, Dwight, Tamayo, Edu, Quiambao + players like Navarro, RJ, Lopez, Balti, Rhenz, Heading, Panopio)

They should be doing this so passing of the torch to the next gen Gilas will be smooth sailing

          • we've been talking/discussing the issues about "Our NF should assemble a Cadet team as part of the ideal basketball program moving forward" since the time of Adam

but we all know since the time BAP and now by the SBP we haven't heard nor read any official announcement or statement that they created an official Cadet team in preparation to become member of the A-team when the right time comes.

we all know there's no such thing.

CCR previously released his 23 for 23 list but sadly it's just a piece of paper and nothing more.

now under CTC, he firmly said that he will stick to his 12 and only pickup 1 or 2 just in case for that 4 year plan

we can't blame him for being a stickler to his system and his discipline.

now with the new ED and coach norman's nationwide talent identification and that latest LV Camp that may end up in few days time

with the purpose of identifying possible Batang Gilas prospects and put them in their personal database

i had a gut feeling that this would be a prelude to that "Cadet thing" that we were longing all along.

there's a big tournament that will commence this coming Aug as per Fil Nstion Select official FB page

and according to some of my friends there some new talents that was recently identified/discovered that may join the tourney.

hoping that they may also tag along for next year's NBTC/Manila Live tourney.

            let see.

            • Cone is a good coach but a stooge of the PBA, he is not good when it comes to long term planning. Heaven forbid Gilas gets decimated by injuries again. Even team USA has a team "B."

              • Bennie Boatwright suffers Achilles injury... He will be out for months and possibly he can't participate atleast as practice player for Gilas in upcoming 2nd window of qualifiers in November...

                • So it looks like Brownlee will still be the naturalized player for the November window

Bennie is not even a naturalized filipino yet, the naturalization process for Boatwright is ongoing, Brownlee will be the naturalized player i think up until fiba asia 2025

remember we still have Kouame as one of our options as well

Clarkson is also still serviceable. The only drawback is his availability and paying for his insurance (unless he chooses to pay it himself).

I don't expect Boatwright to be in the rotation till the 2027 FIBA WCQ.

                        • Kouame is more than good enough for asian qualifiers. Why the gagong pbs hasnt obtained exemption for him as a local is outrageous.

If all the key big frontline players are healthy, cone will not even vitally need brownlee in asian qualifiers. An additional "volume shooter" and vicious attacker is all cone needs. Heading and abando is what he needs in the nt, not the too-limited small forwards like amos and malonzo.

Cone will not have the element of surprise anymore in future tournaments. If he thinks his ginebra tactics and formation will be reliable, he will become as disappointing as the pusod seyer. Cone will also need to upgrade his coaching at top-flight fiba battles.

                          • I expect Boatwright to be with Gilas post 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. By that time, he's probably healed & recovered from his foot injury.

At the 3, we will need good defenders a la Gabe Norwood if Bennie Boatwright, a mainly offensive PF, is going to be the NP. Neither Malonzo nor Oftana have shown capability on defense recently. Maybe team defense, but our main 3 post-Brownlee has to be a capable defender.

Abando will have to play full-time 2, because he's only 6'2", but his length and athleticism might compensate at that spot. Heading's a reliable shooter and defender, so OK naman din.

We will have to adjust our defensive tactics come November. If AJ's not healthy by then, a lot will fall on Kai's shoulders. June Mar-Kai lineup might be attacked, so we need good perimeter defenders. Dwight, CJ, Scottie, Newsome, and JB have to be ready.

It is unclear if this is a torn achilles. I haven't heard of any other achilles injury requiring surgery though. If this is the common torn achilles it is pretty much a career ending injury unless you were a top 10 NBA player. KD is the only player to play at a very high level after this injury. Klay was still pretty good but much lower than his prime. I am pessimistic on Boatwright's level post achilles injury. I think there is no other choice but to use Kouame or natualize another big SF.
