  • Numbers say that we're the highest-scoring team in the 1st window of the Asian qualifiers.

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The numbers are in. The Philippines are arguably one of the best offensive teams across all of the Continental Cup Qualifiers after Window 1.

It's against Hong Kong and a depleted Taiwan, though. Hope we repeat that (and the defense against Taiwan) against NZ.

it was against bahrain and qatar din and even iran if not for the run they made...
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
      1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

      • I just hope that in the 2nd window, we will be able to finally beat New Zealand. I think palagi nalang tayong talo against the New Zealand national team. The Tall Blacks beat us in the 2016 Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Then they swept us in 2 games during the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers (tambak pa pareho yung 2 laro). Then they also beat us again in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.

New Zealand has our numbers it's time we get back at them & stop them from bitching us.

We need Newsome, JB, Dwight, AJ, and Kai healthy for the NZ game this November. They're key for us beating NZ.

Scottie has to defend well, as do CJ, Oftana, and Malonzo (who have struggled in man-to-man defense and rotations as of late, except for maybe Malonzo). Carl, JB, Kai, Dwight, Oftana, and Malonzo have to hit shots.

If Jordan can beat New Zealand, Why not Gilas? If we want to beat NZL, Gilas should match up their physicality.. NZL has always trouble against Middle East teams because they can able to match up w/ their physical strength..

Hello Samad Nikkah Bahrami, is that U?
              Hahaha! Just kidding bro!

Well, as U mentioned, maybe Jordan has the physicality to match up New Zealand which is something that Gilas was lacking.

I think in the last 10 years, we are just 50-50 against Jordan. Its not like we have beaten Jordan more than they have beaten us.

Yes, we also lose to Jordan but we always beat them when the games matter the most… We beat them in their home turf in previous World Cup qualifiers, when Jordan needed that win to seal their place in the World Cup earlier, and we beat them in Asian games gold medal, after losing in preliminaries… we lost to them also in last window of World Cup qualifiers last year at our home but it doesn’t count anymore because both teams are already qualified…

2 of the 3 Gilas coaches in those defeats were former Tall Blacks coaches. With a different coach, this time it would be a different result

We did withstand Jordan's physicality for 3 games, winning two of them. Hope we take that against NZ. Take it and dish it.

I was actually there. NZ led early on with their shooting. Jordan couldn’t take advantage of their superior height. Probably because in terms of physique and rugged play they were the same. It took a superhuman/Kobe-esque performance from RHJ to catchup and win that game.

Yes. The physique of the ME is their advantage over us and even NZ. We are not naturally bulky in general so we need to neutralize that. Just look at Sleat maximizing his Caucasian genes in the current 3x3 to outstrength the competition.

                      • I think what we missed when we played New Zealand in 3 games in 2022 & lost all those games were athletic & mobile guys like AJ Edu, Jamie Malonzo & Chris Newsome. Of course we also didn't have a Kai Sotto in Gilas at that time. I believe the presence of these players in Gilas improves the team significantly.

Even Lebanon also knows how to beat this NZL team... First thing that Gilas should avoid is that "FEAR" playing against Oceania teams... Whenever they playing against them they always come up w/ Fear first even the game is not started...

Once we start winning against NZ, that fear factor is going to vanish. Its the same as how we usually fear China during those years & decades that we can't beat them. But the moment we upset China in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, we realised that China is beatable & is no longer invincible. Imagine, we beat China twice in a row last year.

We've beaten China in 3 of the last 4 competitive games. 2017 was a legit upset. 2023 WC, JC went on an explosion, and they couldn't buy a bucket (we defended well). 2022 Asiad (which was in 2023), we came back against China thanks to JB's explosion and Ange anchoring the defense.

Against NZ, I agree that we needed guys like AJ and Newsome. Let's face it, the only defenders we had in the 2022 games were Dwight Ramos, Will Navarro, and Thirdy Ravena. Shot creation too. Juan and Bolick couldn't get going in February 2022 (we had a mostly poor team that window), and Carl was the only one who could score against NZ in June 2022. Defense was a mess as well.

If I remember it hight, Dwight Ramos didn't play in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup becoz of injury.

Our lack of dependable bigs in 2022 FIBA Asia Cup definitely hurt us. Remember, Kai, Junmar, AJ Edu weren't available. Ange Kouame was injured at that time. We were left with a thin & soft Poy Erram & the raw & slow Geo Chiu to man the middle.
