prep time shouldn't be an excuse for sloppy play? what lol, mind you this was a really weak Aussie team. all the teams that are good at this level have some form of continuity and gilas doesn't have that yet, it's literally the first game. even NZL looked really sloppy until the 4th

So then what was the whole point of getting a coach of a pro team... who had four of his players from his own team... plus three players he worked with in the Asian Games... and two B.League players that are supposed to be pro-level who he is very familiar with working as an assistant in the World Cup... leaving Tamayo and KQ as the only guys who had to be familiar with the group?

Did you buy that bs that Al Francis and those SBP replacements told you that this setup should be that much better in terms of continuity than a bunch of college kids and a FIBA (Al Francis even dared to call him an amateur) coach in a 3-week camp so that the PBA can just finish the Commisioner's Cup in peace?

Sotto was the most useful player in that game no thanks to this stagant offense they tried to run, but because all HK could do was foul his lanky ass and try to make it harder for him to position inside... but he made 7/8 FT's. Cone's own Ginebra players were trying to play PBA baaketball in a game where no one calls defensive 3 for camping in the paint on the zone.

See, the difference with legit FIBA ball than a typical Ginebra game is the number of actions away from the ball to find the best option as opposed to moving that ball around where the end result is a contested corner three or skip pass to the top where everything is more about JB's talent and ability to draw defenders than tactical maturity. Ultimately, they made those shots in the 3rd but found more success out-running a tired 6-man HK team.

How much time flies back then, when I looked at 2013 fiba asia stats we really play to hk level and another thing that I notice is that Yuki Kawamura was really the consistent version of Jimmy alapag/La tenorio (dont get me wrong as Jimmy and La played their roles on our team) but certainly they can be maximized even if the are undersized..

Seen the fiba senior debut of hansen yang. He really has potential.. traditional c.. but can be dominant in asian level

Funny how some posters here predicted a sure win for Gilas against a "complete" Chinese Taipei team with Will Artino, Abbasi & Benson Lin spearheading Chinese Taipei some days or weeks ago. Watching last night games of these two teams - Taiwan vs. New Zealand & Gilas vs. Hong-Kong, probably made everyone realised its going to be foolish expecting an easy win for Gilas over Taiwan. And we are talking here of a depleted Chinese Taipei team without Artino, Abbasi & Benson Lin.

I mean who predicted that's is going to be a close game between Taiwan & New Zealand? Please don't be deceived by the final score. NZ may have beaten Taiwan by 20 pts, but the final score isnt indicative of how close the game was in most part of the game. NZ pulled away only in the last 4 minutes of the game. Almost the same can be said about the Gilas-Hongkong game last night in which everyone of us expected a one-sided game in favor of Gilas, yet we pulled away & distance ourselves from stubborn Hong-Kong team only in the 4th quarter.

If Taiwan has Artino, Abbasi & Benson Lin in last night's encounter with New Zealand, I bet the former would have pulled off a win vs. the Tall Black. And we Gilas fans would be trembling going into the Gilas-Taiwan match.

did you not see the same game i was watching? the assists were basically a simple kick out to a guy who made a tough shot. most of those had nothing to do with any triangle. it was when Gilas just ran everything to Brownlee or said, fuck it may 7'3 sa loob in the 3rd when HK also ran out of ideas offensively. by the 4th quarter garbage time, the entire team was stat padding when they ran the floor.

Not sure what you're complaining, that's exactly what Tim Cone system is all about. Simple passing leads to high FG scoring and high assist. Don't expect overtly complex plays from him, because that's not how his offense is.

Easily Gilas could have led by 40+ or 50 if they milked the mismatches. It was obvious they put on the breaks and made a conscious effort to pass and run the plays. There was hardly no one and ones, isolation, post-ups. Isnt this a refreshing change from the DDO?

how is Thailand that much better?

They're not that much better, they've kept this roster for at least an entire FIBA cycle and added a big body in Ejesu (who's raw af and his bulk is the only thing going for him) and obvioisly Jakrawan who came off the bench and anchored that defense. They also got a lot of similar-sized 6'4 guys playing the 2, 3, and 4 including Morgan who torched them. They play small with Ejesu to start then slowly bring on Jakrawan and all their 6'4 locals to add some size.

Indonesia just couldn't shoot at all and it's not as if Thailand was giving them a hard time. Apart from Prosper, not a lot of familiar faces.

Penetration was usually off a catch or in transition. We just need to improve our offensive execution.

Hansen Yang is rising in the NBA Mock drafts (possible second round pick and still rising). An asian version of Alperen sengun minus the great passing.

It's the fact that once they went up 9-0, they allowed this team that's not on their level to make it a game for at least a half. And yes, I did compare to how this game went by with the Korea-Australia and Taipei-NZ games. This FIBA game is about who makes runs at the right time. It didn't look very professional out there for the first 20 minutes. Then those outside shots started to fall despite good defense... then HK just ran out of gas when Gilas decided to run... this clearly won't work against better teams and the thought of it makes me doubt our chances in World Cup qualifying next year when all them Ginebra players will be tired af coming into those late-2026 windows if the SBP still goes with this aging core. For FIBA Asia qualifying, it is what it is. 2nd place in the group suddenly looks questionable.

is David Muoka considered local for HK? im assuming he didnt play because he is still with a gleague team? also, im pretty sure there's a guard in the Bay Area dragons that went to the Philippines who is Hong Kong national. yang? both of them playing wouldnt change the outcome, but would have been a nice boost for the HK NT.

I think we should improve our defense, though the FIBA commentator did mention that our energy on defense did improve in the Hong Kong game.

-Kai allowed a couple of inside baskets and got blown by when out on the perimeter, but deterred the Hong Kong players for the most part.
-Rotation kinda improved in the 2nd half. Keep that improved rotation up for 40 minutes in the succeeding games.
-PnR defense needs to improve. Our guards cannot die on screens, which I saw a lot of in the 1st half. Kai dropped too low, like he mostly does.

no other true center other than Kai, also we need an actual point. I'd rather have Lopez or any younger wing over Perez if we're gonna stick to the 4 year plan

the problem with Perez internationally is he's hit or miss, no consistency

what is Perez doing?

I think Chris Newsome is Gilas best defensive guard right now, he has good size (6'2") and he always had good lateral movement to keep in step with the player he is defending. And right about now Im thinking Jordan Heading or Rhenz Abando is a better option for Gilas as compared to CJ Perez, the guy has always had poor shot selection and is a poor passer.

I noticed that CJ is good at playing passing lanes, but gets blown by a bit too much, and was late on a rotation. Best as an off the bench guy.
