In my post (post No. 2455), I was just reacting to deku_midoriya's post (post No. 2448) in which he said like, it is hard to maintain a bigger pool becoz most of these Gilas players own lucrative contracts in the respective leagues that they play, therefore these national players have to be compensated well for them to play for the country. Bigger pool could mean bigger problem/burden. But as I argued, coach Chot's Gilas pool for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which is bigger than coach Tim's current Gilas pool, didn't encounter that kind of problem. I think coach Chot's pool had around 20 players or more.
It's not just you calling for a pool expansion.

And how can comparing Chot's large pool versus CTC's small pool be beside the point. We're trying to figure out what strategy is better. It's only rational to look at the results between large and small pools.

I'd rather use that empirical data than basing it on how many sports "writers" (someone funnily used the term stenographer) are asking for it.

And if you would really read and understand my statement...I'm for letting CTC do his own "diskarte." The pool size is just a part of that.

Sorry bro, but you obviously aren't getting what I'm implying. Read carefully my posts (posts 2455 & 2460 & the post of deku_midoriya (post 2448) to understand better.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Remember that coach Chot had a bigger pool back then. I think Gilas pool at that time had around 20 players. And we all know that coach Chot is far from the most likeable basketball personality in Philippine basketball at that time. Coach Chot obviously didn't command respect & support at that time from the Philippine basketball community as compared to the respect & support coach Tim Cone draws from the Phi basketball community at present.
Uhmm, for one, we were hosting the world cup and SBP definitely were willing to spend a lot for that once in a lifetime event. Thats a different scenario right now when Kai sotto, Tamayo, KQ, etc. are earning millions montly in other leagues. The whole Gilas team probably consists of players with max contracts.

This is a basic explanation why ideal as it may seem, having a team B is not feasible unless groups like SGA shoulder it.

Gilas reserves = to replace immediately
Team B = developmental team for the future

When you choose reserve players its because they are capable substitutes immediatlely

Japeth, Kouame, Troy, Mason and psossibly QMB, Heading and Abando are sufficient as reserves in the eyes of CTC

If you are whining, its because you favorite player like Balti, Bolick or Navarro were not chosen.

Lets say CTC indulges you by adding Balti and Navarro, whats stopping other fans from clamoring for Parks, Tolentino, Belanguel to be included? Why even stop at these players, we can add more pa...

        • The bottom line here is we need bigmen because, apparently, Kai is injured, Japeth is injured and Troy is injured as well.

We need third and fourth bigmen because Edu and June Mar also have injury history. We cannot fully rely on them.

Gilas Pilipinas has called up a pair of reinforcements to serve as extra bodies for its training camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna. Concurrent program director and team manager Alfrancis Chua said that they are bringing in RJ Abarrientos and Ralph Cu as the national squad is managing the load of some […]

Let's hope so.. when will we integrate the likes of pre, alas and gemao? When they're 30's? Same as heading when will cone invite him? When he's way past his prime?

we're seeing the effects of short pool as seen in last OQT, 2nd window.. when will tim cone learn? When its too late?

ohh sea games. Half of them are in foreign leagues, who will cone pick? Eh we dont have team b and limited pool.

                      • We’re severely lacking in rim protectors. We know SMC/SBP doesn’t like Kouame. He has never been considered in the NP slot unless JB is not healthy. I highly doubt he will be be played in Doha. But I would be glad to be wrong. The fact is this is a preparation for the qualifier. If Kouame is not going to play there why play him in prep games? As it seems only Edu will be the rim protector in the qualifier and his knees are made of glass. After him you dont even have good secondary rim protectors available. Jamie is just recovering. Mason maybe. But I dont think Carl and KQ are. So I guess Cone will have to play Kouame just to avoid getting embarassed in Doha. Then he’ll just have to plan how to maximize Edu’s minutes in the qualifiers.

if we are talking about this year’s Asia Cup the mechanism of what you are suggesting is obviously tedious. Nevertheless it’s worthwhile to have a team B to which we can pick additional players in case of injuries in team A. But again it’s down with resources, money specifically. It’s common knowledge that Gilas players received 6, 7 or even 8 figures allowances from SBP during FIBA windows. And that’s exclusive of insurance premiums which I understand KBL and B.league imposes. So don’t expect SBP to shoulder all these costs in an expanded pool.

I'd like to win our group, but priority should be to find a workable lineup. We will need as many workable lineups as possible, especially in the November 2025 and even February 2026 windows.
