Since the PBA might probably not take a brief break to give way to the 1st window, it would be the B-league players & perhaps KBL players & college players who would probably be tapped for Gilas. But SBP should have or should already be talking to these players as early as possible. SBP should already be asking a Kai Sotto or a Dwight Ramos or a Thirdy Ravena or a Justin Gutang or a Kevin Quiambao if he is available & would be willing to play for Gilas in February.

Hindi yung hintayin pa ni Al Panlilio na 3 weeks nalang yung 1st window before he will ask a Dwight Ramos if he is willing to play for Gilas in the 1st window. What if Dwight Ramos would say, "I & my girlfriend are going to take a 1 week vacation in Boracay by that time. If you have talked to me earlier, I would have postponed that vacation in May & would gladly play for Gilas in February"
    So paano, nganga nalang tayo?

I say there should be talks between SBP & the possible Gilas players in February as early as possible.
If the rumored TF of Dwight is true, SBP might be unwilling to get him for this level of competition?

    • Since the PBA playoffs will be ongoing well into February my guess is the SBP will tap collegiate players and PBA players from teams eliminated from the playoffs. SBP knows the pinoy imports wont come cheap, well maybe with the exemption of the Ravena brothers, so they wont aggressively pursue the likes of Dwight Ramos, Ray Parks, Kai Sotto and Rhenz Abando.

So, here are, in my view, the viable PBA players from the eliminated teams and those who won't make deep runs (I'm taking likely first round exits as well as out of playoff teams):

NorthPort: Navarro (injured), Arvin (needs to show some perimeter defense)
TerraFirma: Javi GDL (needs to slide to 2 at 6'3"), Carino (hope he can play decently at 4 and 5)
        Ginebra: Ahanmisi, Scottie, Malonzo
SMB: June Mar, Terrence, Perez, Marcio (but he's 36)
NLEX: Bolick, BGR (NP), Valdez (needs to play more at 2 at 6'2" and improve his shooting)
TNT: Oftana, Castro (but he's 37)
RoS: Mamuyac (improve his shooting and playmaking)
Converge: Arana (but needs to show quickness in defending the perimeter)

        For college, here:

        Ateneo: Mason
La Salle: Quiambao, Policarpio (needs to improve perimeter defense), Nelle (graduate), M. Phillips (NP)
        UP: Lopez, Cansino (graduate)
        UE: Remogat
UST: Cabanero (needs to improve perimeter defense and shooting; needs to slide to 2, can't be a 6'3" PF in FIBA unless you're Ping or Abueva)
        FEU: Gonzales (graduate)
        Adamson: Jerom (injured)
Beda: Cortez (needs to improve his quickness and defense)
        Mapua: Escamis

Kai and Dwight are key pieces of the program. Kai will turn 22 this year, and Dwight turns 26. Dropping them from any window (except for injury or beg off) should be out of the question for any sensible mind, especially Dwight.

Recalling SJ and RJ would do some good as well, but there's RJ's clown emoji at Vargas.

          Sir IPC,

except for Abay, WilNav, JELas due to injury and Marcio due to age...I like the rest of your bucketlist...let BGR and Motor Mike handles the NP slot for now..those College boys needs all the international experience if the purpose is to include them in the training pool for 2025 and beyond

If I'm going to make a bucketlist, I'd also include guys overseas like Carl, SJ, RJ, Gutang, Dave, and Kai, even college and HS players like Harris, Konov, Bayla, Panopio.

They're not used to getting a no for an answer, how many times we read a story that so and so player postponed his, blah, blah, blah to play for Gilas and we appreciate and we're giving him a pat on the back.

I don't think we have reason to just underestimate Chinese Taipei which is a rebuilding team. The team was impressive in last year's Jones Cup & in last year's Asian Games, it finished 4th behind Gilas, Jordan & mainland China.
That's why i mentioned a 3 week maximum practice vs Taiwan is already enough... Even Taiwan still didn't announced their roster yet.. Don't rush all things, Sometimes it backfires because the opposing coaches will scout the players especially thru social media if we announced it early... For sure they (SBP) will create a line up that can match vs Abbasi, Artino and company... Good thing our first opponent is HK, They can experiment plays, check who are players that can match up vs Taiwan... And i noticed that the venue is only at Philsports Arena at Pasig... I think it's better to bring the games in the province.. I think some Provincial arenas are FIBA approve arenas by the way... Maybe in Cebu...

                  • In the case of Motor Mike and BGR, I think the SBP wont risk designating either of them as naturalized players since it will hurt their chances of getting that FIBA exemption.

If we want an NP, we should just recall Ange and reintegrate him with the team. He was good in the KO games last Asiad, and in the November 2022 window.

If I'm not mistaken, Taiwan's Mohammed Al Bachir Gadiaga a. k. a. "Abbassi" have once played as Taiwan's naturalized player yet eventually was declared by FIBA as a Chinese Taipei local player.

                        • Just having this wild thought that maybe since Andray Blatche would be playing for Strong Group bound for an international tournament in Dubai, SBP might tap him as Gilas naturalized player in this 1st window FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers.

... but then if he'll just ice the ball at the top of the key, I'd rather have Rosser or even a C-Stan to complement a bunch of guys who'll only be doing 2 weeks training together. I don't trust Blatche in 2023 to train with ANY team for 2 weeks to play just two games expecting quite a sum of money.

                              Against HK and Taiwan? Unnecessary.

Also, is he even in proper shape?

Honestly, 2-3 weeks prep is ideal for 2-3 qualifying games if your team’s core is already set.

It’s not like we’re introducing new faces as our main cards.
