  • Those proud of JMF’s defense, find out what happens if you trade his big ass to Terrafirma. He’s never really had to do anything else on a team with Arwind, Lassiter, Rosser, J-Wash early in his career. Turns out he is capable of doing way more.

    • Someone like Heading or Matthew Wright would do better instead of Perez. Shooters/scorers who could also playmake. Perez is more of a slasher and an inconsistent shooter.

perez is like a very poor man's jordan clarkson, best way to utilize him is as a microwave scorer off the bench. at this point if he can't score then he's pretty much useless. heading, wright, berto should be ahead of him in the gilas rotation as combo guards.

        • These last two games pretty much exposed Oftana and Perez, but moreso the former. At least Perez is still useful to break down defenses for some drop passes, and he’s still useful for some matchups being the speediest player in the roster.
Never look too far ahead. You might stumble on a block right in front of you.

          • Tamayo might have earned himself more minutes.

I hope Coach Tim won’t ride Jb, Dwight and Newsome till their wheels fall off. With the roster lacking depth for this level, it’s very likely. Too bad we’re playing back to back. Bottom line, bench must step up.

            • I will say, these two games have been impressive, the Latvia and Georgia games are winnable but they have to get over the fourth quarter hump.

Also it’s been fun watching Junmar bully Euro bigs, he’s got a nice combination of strong but not too slow footed and he’s been throwing his weight around.

Kai and Junmar work well, Kai has always worked well with big to big connections, even if it messes with spacing if the offense can be surrounded by shooters and good perimeter defenders those two together can wreak havoc on slower euro teams

                Agree.
Perez' suspect 3-pt shooting makes him a poor offensive option. He's a good slasher in the PBA but against taller/bigger opponents in the world stage, that slashing capability would simply be limited. He's also not a good playmaker.

Fellow guard/wingman Chris Newsome may also have limited offensive skills in the world level but at least Newsome's defense is pretty decent & he can playmake a bit, making him serviceable for Gilas. I say we replace Perez with a Jordan Heading whom we know is among the best 3-pt shooter in Philippine basketball right now who can also orchestrate.

                • So from these comments, June Mar and CJ defended good, so did the entire team. That's amazing.

If they manage to do it in actual games, Cone's a miracle worker.

Watching Junemar use his shoulders and butt to carve space under the basket against a double or triple team of Euro-size bigs and get the basket shows that he's not just strong for a PBA player. He's strong, period.

Which makes me wonder, what did Junmar lack during his early non-impressive stints with Gilas as compared to the way he's been playing for Gilas in the last 3 years or so? Remember that he's now 34 yrs old, yet it seems we've been seeing the best of Junmar Fajardo in Gilas uniform. Well, let us forget for a while that Junmar being a poor PnR defender. I want to talk about his offensive game, in particular his inside game.

He is better in the triangle than in chot's DDO. Kai is much more willing passer to him than Blatche.

he was good circa 17-18 when a PG named kiefer used him well on a DDO system.. a good PG will look fajardo good in gilas jersey..

wish previous coaches use fajardo’s mid range gaming more.. that’s what i said before that people choose to ignore.. that’s the untapped potential that fajardo unlocking in this stage of his career

The mid-range game especially among the bigs has become a dying aspect of the game. TBH, I like to see centers & "fours" hitting those medium range jumpers which was very common among the bigs in the PBA during the 90's with Patrimonio, Limpot, Espino, Bong Hawkins, Vic Pablo, Codi

I actually like Kai Sotto to master the medium range "soft" jumper & make it a big part of his offensive arsenal. With his height, Kai doesn't need to jump that high in taking those mid-range shots. He just have to make a soft jumper to thwart his defender. I believe that most players when they take their jump shots by leaping so high, nagiging less accurate yung tira nila. That's why usually a soft jumper is more accurate. Problem is, if you don't possess a significant height advantage over your defender, you'll be compelled to jump higher when releasing your jump shot.

Yeah, that's what I also observed. It seems Kai gets along well with his fellow Gilas big men teammates like Junmar & AJ Edu. Yung mga touch passes nila sa isat-isa are impressive to watch.
