  • We have to fully understand that even on interviews CTC always yanking that " I am a defensive coach, I take pride on defense"

in some degree I agree on that but in a certain part there's also some level of inconsistencies even in his club team.

I think one of the main reason is that majority of his players at BGSM are not known to be an elite defender, in my own personal observation.

except maybe to Scotty 2 Hottie he is decent but not yet elite IMHO.

now as for Gilas, except for JB, Newsome and AJ the rest was not yet on the level as per our expectation for international level.

I do hope, that in the coming years up to the 2027 cycle our core may somehow gain some valuable experience to level up there defensive instinct as per our expectation.

    • TC play on D is drop coverage Kai and JF. Fight thru screens for guards or switching, that's why open shot was created for Turkey shooters coming off screens.

Collapse in the paint for drives. Which means long close out. We just have to pray that Latvia will have terrible shooting night as that scheme will lead to alot of open shoots

Right now, we only have Newsome and Dwight, maybe JB for fighting picks (but I did see him get caught once). The others (CJ, Oftana, Quiambao) have to improve on that end.

I actually saw alot of times our players lag behind after after screen. Which is normal because of how string and wide Turkey.

I really hope we have a good strategy against this.

I just mentioned that something new that they were trying out is NOT doing drop down coverage. Kai/JMF are sticking with their man and leaving the task of help defense for the other guys. It seems that CTC has accepted the fact that Kai/JMF can't be effective drop-down-defenders at this level and will just aim to neutralize opposing bigs. It's a big adjustment and is something they have to get more reps on collectively.

We don't defend as many pick-and-rolls in the PBA too, so we hardly had to scheme.
That is why I'm really in favor of foreign coaches enter the PBA so that the style of game in the PBA would start to look like the FIBA style of game where picks are rampant & players shoot from 3 more. In this way our PBA national team players will get used to the FIBA style of game, hence adjustments from playing in the PBA to playing in FIBA won't be difficult.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

We just saw MERALCO PnR Ginebra and SMB to death, as well as exploit mismatches. They'll have to defend it.

Yun nga lang may 2 malaking problema - its very expensive to travel the team to Europe & have a training camp there & of course our PBA Gilas players won't be available during that period.
Or why bring them here and create mini pocket tourney... even teams such as Portugal, Kosovo, Albania, and even England (Great Britain) is good option, Those low level European teams are equivalent to top ranked Asian team... Because even in 2027, We will surely face a European team... So they have to familiarize early with them... The level in Europe is very high... Lebanon also play in Europe early June and they were massacred against Lithuania's team B... That's how low level Asian competition are... Lebanon is already top teams in Asia but somehow become pasties against even Europe's team B squads...

I wondered why it did not work for Iran or China when a German and Serbian coach led them. Even Japan was not winning games in WC 2019 until their current coach which uses DDO and Iso not strictly Euro plays

Junmar was way worse than Kai in his early Gilas years... give the kid a break.. In his early years, he is already contributor.. When he reach his prime, I'm sure everyone here will happy... Just trust the process....

Point is, our players have to get used to defending teams like Turkey, Latvia, Japan, and SoKor more frequently. Defend the PnR and defend the 3 while covering the paint.

Iran won back-to-back FIBA Asia golds with a Serbian coach, though he did have the help of their golden generation.

I rewatch the 4th quarter and they still do drop coverage when JF is on the floor. The time they were switch everything and man to man is when Japeth was on the floor

I notice their favorite play of Turkey was bringing their SG from the weakside all the way to the strong side. Putting CJ, Justin or Dwight on multiple screens so they will log behind. Then putting JF on the strong side so when the SG recieve the ball its a catch and shoot situation. JF was on drop coverage and was late to cover the SG.

Culture matters... Even Korea not hiring foreign coaches... Language barrier, attitudes of every players and coaches has to adjust to the culture of the country they coaching... If Tab Baldwin coaching those countries and saying "Tactical Immatured" to the local coaches, He will get Persona Non Grata there... Tab is lucky that he is in the Philippines...

I was actually surprised that Carl got 5 rebounds, 2 of them offensive. He has trouble rebounding outside the Philippines.
