We will miss AJ. JB's our only reliable defender from the 4/5 spots (I listed him as a wing, but he can play 4), unless Kai shows defensive improvement (which I hope to see in the games leading up to, and including, the FIBA Asia Cup in August next year).
Onus on Scottie, Newsome, and Dwight to anchor our defense, then. Hopefully, CJ and Oftana improve on that end too, as do Carl and Quiambao.Last edited by IPC; 06-18-2024, 03:23 PM.

If we'll have difficulty on defense, we'll have to rely on offense, especially transition, since I dunno if our team can shoot enough.
I said it before, I do not trust a "half the defense, double the offense" gameplan, because in the past, it has blown up in our faces, sometimes spectacularly. We had a good offense in the 2017 and 2022 Asia Cups (though 2022 was inflated by the India game), but poor defense got us knocked out (118-86 scoreline against SoKor, allowed 66% from the field, 72% from 3). Against Indonesia in 2022, we lost the gold medal because we couldn't defend the 3-point line for shit. Lost to Kazakhstan in 2018 because we couldn't defend the 3. If we can win (or in this case, at least keep close) with an offensive gameplan and consistently outshoot opponents, good.

I'll just watch for the following:
1. Have Kai, Carl, and Quiambao improved enough defensively, or do they still have work to do? As I've repeatedly said, AJ is our only reliable interior defender among the locals. The other reliable is JB, our NP. We will need Kai to improve to be decent at that in FIBA, and for Carl to at least be a good defender at 4, and Quiambao at 4 or 3 so that we won't be as reliant on AJ defensively.
2. Can Oftana and CJ defend well in the FIBA setting? They haven't had the best defensive season in the PBA. Oftana is a good rebounder, but has gotten blown by in the PBA. Man-to-man is a crucial part of being a 3, which is Oftana's FIBA position. CJ's defense outside of passing lanes is below average at best. He gets blown by (see PBA Finals, where Banchero and Newsome routinely got by him), and
3. Can Carl, Oftana, Mason, and JB shoot in FIBA? We will need shooting so at least the floor is spaced. We need these guys to shoot well. Support from Dwight, Newsome, and even Scottie and CJ is appreciated too.
4. Can June Mar compensate for his poor defense in the FIBA setting? In the past, June Mar could compensate for poor defense. Now, I'm not sure anymore, given the past tournaments. Maybe cover for him enough so that when AJ and Kai are out, he can spell them long enough.
5. Is having perimeter defense enough to compensate for AJ's absence? We have four good perimeter defenders in Scottie, Newsome, Dwight, and JB. They will have to prevent rim pressure so that when Kai sits, opponents won't attack the basket at will.
6. What lineups will Cone try?
7. How will our defense perform without AJ? Ayun na nga, AJ is our only reliable interior defender among the locals. So with him out, how will we do? What are the schemes to make up for it?
Just watch how our players improve and grow into the FIBA setting. If we keep up, great. If we win, better.

Well we're gonna see big excuses from those vloggers, why their boy Kai gets beat by a step or two and if FIBA refs calls the game tight,he might be out of the game most of the time. There was a couple of games during the Bleague that he totally lost his composure when the guards and quick forwards blew past him,and he was called for reaching.

I just hope that this roster won't get blown out by opponents

That's nice. Gilas season is officially on"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

The tuneup game, which will be open to the public, will see the Philippine team play a Mustangs squad that reportedly signed former NBA players Dwight Howard and DeMarcus Cousins recently.
It is still unclear, however, whether the two will play in the tuneup game.

With the way Scottie has been playing in the PBA, I would have gotten Keifer or Thirdy instead.
Amos has also been lackluster so far.
It's a 2-match tournament (unless we play our hearts out and win).
We don't need a month-long preparation in this case.
