In an era where even 6'4 is considered short for a point guard, where it's a big deal if 6'8-6'11 giants are expected to score from the perimeter and defend the perimeter, with all due respect, this achievement against Latvia is lightyears ahead of anything the older gilas players have accomplished. This is to me almost in the same weight class as China's win against Serbia-Montenegro in the 2004 olympics with Yao in context of Asian basketball. The Philippines as a team is someone you'd expect to still be playing 2004-2008 level basketball especially with its records in the past 10 years but they've climbed a massive mountain to show everyone they are capable of modernizing.

      • Many of the folks here are afraid of playing against Brazil. On my part, I am very excited that, finally, during my lifetime, we are going to play against them. One of the perennial contenders in the Latin Americas, alongside Argentina, it's a huge honor for Gilas to play against Brazil.

Always say among the latin american teams (Argentina pr dominican and brazil) is that we can matchup with brazil..because their main guys huertas beinte are old not ath

            • I watched the two games of Brazil, and all I can say is we have a better chance of beating Montenegro. Brazil’s speed and athleticism would be a problem for us. I dont know how CTC can counter Brazil’s advantage in that area. Maybe another episode of zone defense?

From the clips I ve seen, they still shout it everytime they end practice during the huddle at the end. But I think what change here is the emphasis, we the observers barely notice it unlike before.

But Puso is synonymous with courage though.. and they definitely showing enormous amount of it everytime the players are on the floor especially against teams that on paper stronger than them. I mean coming back from 20 points deficit opposite a highly talented team and still doing something especial at the end.

But then again this is the first time in a long while that I saw a gilas team with less emotion and more compose even during endgames and I mean them hitting amazing shots after shots and betraying minimal to zero emotion is a sign of maturity and strong mind.

                • The BasketNews guys are reviewing the OQT.

Part on Gilas starts on the 22:23 mark. Donatas Urbonas noted the increased ball movement, physicality, simple basketball, some "lucky shots," defensive effort, the bigs, Brownlee, and that we play more as a unit. The simple plays like PnR and looking for advantages. Urbonas and Augustas Suliauskas also raved on June Mar, with Urbonas calling June Mar one of the most powerful players he's ever seen.

An African nation not named Senegal is somewhat always a bad matchup for the PHL. So playing a Brazil team is probably "safer" because players and style are familiar, than Cameroon who has too many unknown variables

                      • Gilas is a highly technical team with excellent players.- Aleksandar Petrovic

Petrovic said Gilas poses a different challenge compared to other teams they’ve faced including Cameroon.

When asked about it during a postgame press conference, Petrovic said Cameroon plays more of a physical style of play, while the Philippines is more technical.

“If you are not ready to face that physicality which the African teams have, you are in big trouble because they are all over the rim, they press you, and you need to have clean ideas. Cameroon is that kind of team,” said the Croatian coach.

“Philippines is completely different. It’s a highly-technical team with excellent players. Four or five of them play more than 33 minutes. It’s very difficult to compare them. It’s completely different,” said Petrovic.

fearless forecast... kung kinaya ni Junemar si Terrence Jones, mas kaya si Caboclo.

Also, blessing in disguise Kai got taken out so bench players could shake off the rust.

I think PH will take this game by a wide margin if they don't play like the opposition. Brazil plays like us in our previous WC iterations specifically 2014 and 2023, so much star power but too predictable. If we avoid going back to our old ways we'll get the dub.
Manifesting: Philippines top 5 in the FIBA World Rankings

June Mar is ridiculously strong. I remember in his early years players were bouncing off him in FIBA and being called a lot for offensive fouls. Wish he's also quick and agile but I guess we have other bigs for that

But, beating a # 6 on their home floor in this era makes this team extra special.
That was the Pakistan NT during the 1990 Asian Games, where the Pakistanis were wearing tennis shorts. But going back to PHL's international success, Caidic's NCC team captured the imagination of the whole nation when they beat USA Select in 1986 Jones Cup. albeit with 3 naturalized players. They were so popular that even the comic trio of TVJ named their movie characters Dennis, Jeff and Chip, and almost all viewers knew the reference.

That NCC team birthed the Arguably GOAT PG in Calma, the Absolute GOAT shooter in Caidic and the Definitive GOAT aerial artist in Samboy,

JMF's upper body strength is truly world-class. Also, in the current era where some teams would have leaner centers, JMF would have the strength advantage.

It worked against Latvia, and it didn't against Georgia. Like I said before, our team won't be good enough to beat every type of team, we can only hope to do well against certain types of teams.

Brazil will be a tall task because their bigs are strong and quick. Hopefully, the team's newfound ability to compete no matter what comes through.
