That extra cost came back to bite them. Their agency always looked for the quick buck instead of steady but surer development.

For me, the reason Kobe Paras' career got derailed was because of too many distractions. Maybe having family with him could have kept his focus on basketball and school. So there's really no black or white answer. We have to remember, they were both minor-aged Pinoys who aren't culturally used to being independent at a young age.
In hindsight, maybe it would have been better if Kai was accompanied by a relative/close friend who was younger and low maintenance.

A good example of someone who had a positive effect is Pacquiao's Buboy. It's invaluable to have someone like that who is like an all-around assistant, bodyguard, confidant and friend.

It seems to me that US HS/Prep trainining for our prodigies have not been effective. If the family is concerned about their emotional development why not shorter term training until they are 18 then let them go to US for college.

My opinion, he stayed in the Philippines too long. He was guarding 6’5-8 centers and 5’10 guards who lacked the size and athleticism to really challenge him. He developed bad habits because of this during his developmental stage. He actually really blossomed physically and athletically at TSF, even his skills improved. It was the period from Ignite to Adelaide which was another crucial growth period where he stagnated. I don’t think Ignite was necessarily bad since it was meant as a developmental program to prepare kids for the NBA. For Kai though he needed at least 4 years of serious development at that time though since his body and skills weren’t yet NBA ready.

Panlilio said the SBP is only waiting for Sotto to submit MRI results attesting that he's '100-percent fit to play' before signing him to a contract.
“After being informed of Kai Sotto’s injury, the SBP is just waiting for him to submit his MRI results attesting that he’s 100 perfect fit to play before signing his contract," said the SBP head.
