Is this Mahmood? I think he still has a year of high school left.

If it's Mahmood, then yes the buzz has been very noisy. But I'm assuming it would be a recruit for the upcoming season?

        • josh david and prince alao for dleague?
estacio and rubico/alian for pinoyliga and filoil?
who'll be the ideal replacements for nonoy and nelle?

          • It's crazy. Three pre-season tournaments held at practically the same period: PBA D-League, PinoyLiga Collegiate Cup, FilOil Pre-Season. And there was the Ballout earlier. There could also be the UCBL Invitational around July. Will the schools use different teams then (A and B)?

Feel bad for a lot of the kids but I hope Ateneo prioritizes the locals, or even the eligible fil-ams over the ineligibles. (Though I hear they're confident in the cases of Koon and Ballungay for eligibility at the very least).
That is what position-less basketball looks like. A lot of European youth teams have lineups of 4-almost-the-same height and 1 big. All have versatile skills and play multiple positions and all can shoot.

A recent local team that kind of employed the same tactic was the champion junior Letran team. Everyone close in height, versatile, long and athletic. Only caveat was the subpar shooting.

              • As much as I criticize the green archers putting escandor in the lineup, he's really a decent spot up shooter and even played well vs CEU yesterday. Its up to topex now if he'll give him minutes in the UAAP

Agree with your point on position-less basketball but ADMU recruited so many of that type of player, considering they already had guys like Credo, Mallillin that fell to the wayside as a result of the new recruits, and guys such as Bongo haven't been lined up as a result.

Scary thought if Tab can pull it off though.

                  • Tab CAN pull it offf. That’s why he’s Tab. No, it won’t be easy…but just looking at his track record, Tab seems to revel in adversity and/or the underdog role. Imagine taking on the role of Malaysian national team coach amid the PH (then) regional superiority . Taking on a Jordan national team that had not seen significant progress since the days of the Barakat (Murad & Hilal) brothers…or even taking New Zealand to a podium finish in basketball’s highest level tournament. The man is a legend of international basketball, and it will take someone at the level of Rajko or Mario Palma to hold a candle to him. Coaches Gold and Ayo can get there someday, but that’s a country mile away . (Yes, I am fanboying.) :-)

                    • saw the pinoyliga lineup of NU, Perciano and Delos Reyes are part of the lineup. Raw talents that Danny I will love to mentor.

                      • Looks like UP is training 6'6" Belmonte into a multi-position defender instead of just being a tall guy inside. He looks quick enough to defend the perimeter.

I think it depends also on the physicality the league allows. I just remember how Cagulangan got away with several dangerous moves before he got a foul called on him. He had a strong bump on Koon that seemed to have popped the guys shoulder in a 4th quarter. Before he got called for undercutting Kouame, he did it earlier already, explaining Kouame's reaction. Lean guys are built for mobility but if they are allowed to be football tackled or other Philippine gulang they will get hurt.

I remember the Philippine Super Liga finals, and the San Juan bigs were surprised that all their gulangs were being called for fouls. It was necessary. The league was protecting Balti. The guy is a bit stronger than before but if they allowed all the gulangs the guy would be injured before he got to the PBA. The sad reality is. The play style we call Pinoy basketball is predicated on physicality to counter taller and faster opponents. This style was popularized by Jawo Gordon's Gins and they defeated the taller, faster, more skilled Purefoods with it. This style is also the sahod style popularized by Rudy "The Destroyer" Distrito. Who I think was called that because of the many careers he destroyed.

This style is how the Amsali-led NU was able to out-muscle Jalen Green's team. For Jalen Green the calls were so different it was almost another game.

The UAAP is making strides to move away from the god-awful Pinoy style. I hope they don't regress, now Tab is going all out for position-less basketball. Position-less basketball won't thrive if the typical Pinoy style calls are allowed.
