Caloy might be the coach in charge of development, as he has had a decent track record in developing players in RoS.

He emphasized Ginebra's varying offenses and their good ball movement, their versatility, the diversity of the players' skillsets.

As to versatility, he pointed out the fact that they have three 6'4"+ wings in Gray, Brownlee, and Malonzo, and guys like Standhardinger, Scottie Thompson, and Aljon Mariano are also multi-skilled, multi-position players.

As to diversity of players skillsets, there's LA Tenorio’s playmaking, Stanley Pringle’s shot-making, Nards Pinto’s point-of-attack defense, an Scottie Thompson’s all-around game. CStan's improved as a post-hub and as the hedge man in PnR situation, and Japeth is a good PnR finisher and rim protector. The two bigs complement each other, as one’s weakness is the other’s strength.

All these added to Ginebra's championship being due to a well-constructed roster, and they knew exactly what to do with the pieces they had.
For this coming season, Ateneo and UP will have similar lineups to Ginebra. Ateneo will have Chris Koon, Josh Lazaro, Kai Ballungay, and Mason Amos if developed well defensively. UP will have Aldous Torculas, Mark Belmonte, Chico Briones, and Ashon Andrews as wings, with Chico and Belmonte playing small ball 4 if needed. Tall, versatile players at 3 and 4, and good potential on defense. Also a few players who can play key roles like Spencer, Abadiano, Alarcon, Cansino, Gonzales, and Malick for UP, and Obasa, Chiu, Gomez for Ateneo. If I missed anyone, please tell me. This is not including potential recruits.

Hope other top schools can emulate. FEU has Cholo, NU has Manansala, and DLSU has Abadam. Hope they can get more tall wings and tweeners and develop and play them as such.

Looks like Francis Lopez is the one embracing Carl in the photo, but we'll have to wait and see if it is Lopez.

        • I think up has good track record of developing instant impact college players.. they dont care if you leave after 2 years as long as you win
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
          1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

          • coach tab will probably shift his focus now on konov and mahmood?

            • With the addition of LeBron, Kobe (I think he's grade 12 now; likely to commit) and Sean (likely to commit), UP's frontcourt looking stacked. I'm not sure if minutes are going to be as readily available. I wonder if this will this affect the Seven Gagate sweepstakes.

              • Both Gagate and Coronel posted stories of them hanging out in Diliman earlier today.

Of course no confirmation at all, but they do know how to tease.

I think this pretty much confirms it without having an official announcement. Wow. Incredible to think that UP reloaded a front court that lost Lucero & Tamayo that quickly. Lina seems to be the odd man out again. Will he leave for NCAA?

I am worried for the players. Too many players, too little playing time, and only Spencer, Cansino, Cagulangan, and Malick will graduate after this season. Plus, the 2020 batch will exhaust their eligibility only by Season 88, namely Abadiano, Fortea, Gonzales, Alarcon, Torres, Felicilda, Lina, and Eusebio.

UP will have Cansino, Felicilda, Torres, Lopez, Briones, and maybe Alter, Gagate, Coronel, and Demisana coming in next season, and that's a lot. Jeez, how many will be able to leave early enough to free up spots?

                    • Dlsu looking like crazy by not backing Topex by letting him bring more of his trusted staff with him.

Looks half baked again . Caloy or any asst could be planting seeds behind topex back to get the hc gig.

DLSU will again recruit late as they do everything last minute and try half baked solutions

Welp, looks like this is what Toroman was afraid of. You'd think they try to copy Ateneo or UPs model, where the coach has full control, and has a team manager/assistant coach who will ward off external forces (Remulla for UP, Arespacochaga + team manager for Ateneo)

                          Comment

                          • The brothers are particular in keeping it within their own. Hence all the assistant coaches are all alumnus. Heck the Green Archers group, full of older generation LaSallians, are advising coach Topex to take up his masters in DLSU. lmao

Also, no, they've started recruitment well before Topex's hiring hence Vhoris' commitment and James Nacua sighting.

It?s Gozum all over again. Given what Will has accomplished, it?s not far fetched Lina would bolt.
Never look too far ahead. You might stumble on a block right in front of you.

                              • It's interesting how the player commitment process unfolds in the Philippines. It's wishful thinking but I think it would be better for everyone involved if a traditional "signing day" for high school commits is implemented. In the US it is usually the summer after the players' junior year (3rd year high school) and then less so senior year. This gives the the player security and focus for his senior year and it gives the college school he chooses more time to plan for arrival.

It's crazy that right now, everything is verbal and no commit is really a sure commit until he enrolls and everything is last-minute. Who prefers this current informal set-up and keeps it as the status quo?
