If only PBA pipol think the way most of us here at IBN do & if only they have as much passion for Phi basketball as most of us do. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. I'll be happy if Gilas is given a month of full time training & preparation for the tournament. Kaya nga sabi ko in my original post, I'm hoping Gilas gets at least 20 days of training/preparation prior to the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup.

The mandatory release time for this one (and future Asia Cups, World Cups, and Olympics) is 28 days of training time, and the duration of the tournament (which is Day 1 up to the final day). Unless if the ballclub and SBP agree on a shorter or longer period.

If the player or club refuses to comply with the release, the national federation can request FIBA to impose sanctions.

I got these from FIBA Regulations Book 3.

Is our dying PBA covered with that FIBA rule? How come it wasn't impose when the PBA refused to lend its players to Gilas in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup?

No PBA player but Erram was called up for that tournament. The rule applies only to players who were called up, as well as their clubs.

            OK I get it.
Our disastrous campaign in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup really left a bitter taste in my mouth considering that in the window qualifiers we were 6-0, even beating our traditional tormentor South Korea twice. Things really started to mess up when Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin was replaced by Chot Reyes. SBP stirred the hornet's nest when it replaced Tab Baldwin. Everything went messy the moment Chot Reyes took over the Gilas team. And everything started to get better with Gilas when Chot was replaced by coach Tim Cone.

I was actually thankful at the time that the PBA didn't send anyone to that Asia Cup.

That was after the SEA Games. Among the PBA contingent in that tournament, Only June Mar performed consistently well (on offense). Wright, Troy, and Pogoy underperformed, Montalbo wasn't any good, and Mo, Go, and Tungcab didn't get much PT.

I was happy that there were no PBA players at the time because a lot of them have underperformed (Pogoy, Troy, Wright). Also, Ange Kouame was part of the pool. Once Ange got hurt, now that's when we got screwed. We had no rim protector and primary defender.

Now, we need the PBA for JB or Boatwright (when he gets naturalized), Newsome's point of attack defense, quality wings (Oftana, Malonzo, Navarro), and extra bigs (June Mar, Japeth, Carino), unless some of those needs per position go abroad.

PBA should postpone its opening of the 2025-2026 PBA season to late August so that PBA Gilas players can play in that tournament. PBA has a history of not putting enough importance to FIBA Asia Cup judging from its refusal to take a brief break to give way to Gilas campaign in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.

I just hope that PBA will be committed to to lend its players to Gilas for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. And of course I hope Gilas gets at least 20 days of full time training/practices prior to the tournament.
We need to take serious the FIBA Asia cup to rank up the rankings... If we qualified to the 2027 FIBAWC w/ low ranking then we will mess up w/ the draws when WC comes, usually Lower ranked teams can't get good groupings... We have to be atleast 25-27 ranked team come 2027 to be order to have good positioning come 2027... That is important if we want to qualify for 2028 LA Olympics...

The problem is that PBA is not directly under FIBA restriction... PBA is a private entity… that’s why SBP has no direct power to restrict PBA when it comes to borrowing players…

I still believe that the inclusion of some PBA players would have made a difference. I think Junmar, Standhardinger (As our naturalized player. Remember that we had no naturalized player in 2022 FIBA Asia Cup), Japeth, CJ Perez, Oftana, Thompson, Pogoy (though Pogoy sucked in the 2022 SEA Games, there are windows & tournaments where Pogoy was serviceable for Gilas). Its obvious that without Kai, Kouame & the PBA guys, Gilas was weak at the low post with only Poy Erram & Carl Tamayo as our bigs. I think our opponents easily exploited this weakness of ours.

The problem with the PBA is that it doesn't treat the FIBA Asia Cup seriously, or it is not willing to make some sacrifice for the sake of Gilas' participation in the Asia Cup. Parang FIBA World Cup lang yung priority ng PBA eh. Syempre "world stage" na kasi, the hype is just too much.

PBA was willing to postpone the Governor's Cup last year to give way to Gilas' campaign in the 2023 Asian Games simply becoz it was desperate to redeem itself after Gilas' debacle in last year's World Cup. It was simply for redemption, and I'm happy that we finally won the Asian Games basketball gold after several decades of drought.

And I see the value of the PBA now in providing bodies in key positions like the 3 and the 5.

Chiu and Erram were not enough as centers, agreed. We were killed defensively and on the boards (see Lebanon, NZ). June Mar, Japeth, CStand might have made an impact on the boards, but defensively, not so much.

Jamie Malonzo & Chris Newsome would have been good additions to the team but I think they were not yet declared by FIBA as locals at that time.

Maybe next year PBA will take FIBA Asia cup seriously... Jeddah is good marketing tool for PBA especially for Pinoys living in Jeddah.. And PBA might finish their 2024 - 2025 season maybe in July 2025.. So atleast 1 month of preparation for Gilas...

July. Jesus Christ, that's not enough, just 2-3 weeks at most.

That's the 2019 WC all over again, where the PBA ended only on August 16, two weeks before that WC. Though, us sending one of the worst Gilas lineups in recent memory also had something to do with that.
