Just look at the PBA we still have 6'5-6'6 centers. 6'4 power forwards. In international play Troy, Erram and Almazan are supposed to be sfs/sgs. Coaches are saying they turned them into stretch forwards when they still play like undersized centers.

Best career move of Carl Tamayo is going to Japan, he'll play like a true forward. Worst career move of Balti is settling for the PBA, he'll be in the mold of Almazan.
Troy, Erram and Almazan don't need to be SF/SGs. They just needed to be able to switch to the perimeter. They weren't developed for FIBA play.

And yeah, we're such a guard-oriented basketball country that the 3, 4, and 5 positions have been neglected. That is, until we got the likes of June Mar and Japeth for 5, then Carl, Balti, Mason, and Quiambao at 4, then Navarro, Oftana, Malonzo, and Lopez at 3 after Gabe. We still have a lot of work to do, though, to produce more FIBA-type players at 3 and 4.

And since we're a guard-oriented nation, why not start every kid as guards on both ends, especially given that our tallest are usually 199-203cm? That way, if some kids grow to 196-201cm, they might translate their skills and lateral quickness to the bigger positions, especially 3 and 4. As for rebounding and screening naman, everyone should learn to box out, and today's systems require everyone to screen.

OK, got a little sidetracked. The development part is best for the Cadet/Development thread. Just replied here.

    • Here are some options for the Asia Cup and the windows:

Guards: Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, Jordan Heading, Dwight Ramos, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., Jared Bahay, Jerom Lastimosa, Evan Nelle, Schonny Winston, Gian Mamuyac, James Spencer, Nic Cabanero, Miguel Oczon, Andy Gemao
Wings: Calvin Oftana, Jamie Malonzo, Will Navarro, Caelum Harris, Jared Abadam, Cholo Anonuevo (if eligible), Francis Lopez, James Nacua, Josh Coronel, Jacob Bayla, Enoch Valdez, John Barba, Thirdy Ravena
Forwards: Carl Tamayo, Justine Baltazar, Mason Amos, Alex Konov, Josh Lazaro, Kevin Quiambao, Will Gozum, Luis Pablo
Bigs: Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, Ange Kouame (NP), Seven Gagate, Gab Demisana, Geo Chiu

Retain enough holdovers from previous Gilas programs, and then make room for younger guys with upside over not-so-useful veterans with none.

      • what is the point of naming a roster 2 years away ( 2025) or is this a wish list ( like Gilas 23 for 23) ?

or are these lineups for now ?

        • PG’s are thin .

Schonny was complaining about not being used as PG during his first season here. Maybe they can use him there since he has size and can shoot. Hes doenst have the reps running it though .
          Belangel RJ werent really it.

At least the best prospects in Hs are big gaurds Alas and Gemao

Guam bring back Tai Wesley... East division is more tougher than the West division... Guam, Mongolia and Thailand can qualify easily in main draw of FIBA Asia if they placed on the Western section... After big 6 of East (PHI, AUS, NZL, CHN, JPN & KOR), 2 spots will left and those spots will be up for grabs (TPE, INA, THA, GUM, MGL)... While on the West section, after IRI, LIB & JOR.. Other 5 spots are up for grabs.. maybe KSA and BRN have some advantage, but only little...

              • Schonny was turnover prone with La Salle which probably why we didn't see him at point.

                • Watching Pre-Qualifiers in Qatar thru live stream... I hope this format retains forever... And hoping that more teams will participate... Those low ranked teams getting their exposure because of this new format... w/o this format, those teams will not have any opportunity to showcase their abilities.... This is the reason why Indonesia getting much needed exposure because they played regularly against top teams in Asia... in that case, they are now not afraid playing against Philippines or any Asian teams right now... Same as KSA and Bahrain... they are all started here in Pre Qualifiers... w/o this format, they can't be competitive these days.. Even South Sudan... Whatever some people tells that this new format "sucks", They are fool and not understand the real purpose of new format...

                    • I just watch the replay of Iraq-Qatar game at youtube won by Iraq by 5 pts. Qatar has a new naturalized player in Michael Lewis II who is a 6-foot-1, 25-year old guard.

The game was close although Iraq was in control for most part. Qatar really is no longer as strong as it was a decade ago. It is now just the same level as Iraq, UAE, Bharain, Kuwait, Palestine.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Yeah... It was KSA and Bahrain now the kings of Gulf basketball in the last 8 years... Qatar was on decline after the Hagop rule was implemented... They can hire more kids under 16 years old to be local, But it has also effects on development of their program, because it is unsure if their recruits are good long term... Unless they will hire American kids below 16....

                        • While Palestine starting their life after Sakakini era... It's hard for them to find another player like him since their population is less and some problems within their country... If they didn't choke that India game during playoff round, maybe they are in the place of India today.. They will give some fight unlike India, knowing how good is Sakakini is alongside Abu Shamala, Krayem and a naturalized player....

By the way Palestine is now the first team who grab the slot for next edition of Asia cup qualifiers starting November 2023 after getting 3-0 start this qualifiers, joining the 16 teams who qualified in last FIBA Asia cup last year in Jakarta...

We should really work on getting our ineligibles exempted down the line after they've played here for a bit. Balungay, the Philips brothers and Lucero come to mind. Maybe QMB if he starts playing here too.
