Sotto 4 points (1/3 FGs), 2/2 FTs, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, (-7) in 5:07.
In Kai?s 5 minutes he was tasked to defend Rashard Kelly. The latter took 4 attempts on Kai and converted 3/4 for 7 points.
Clearly just as last season, Kai has trouble guarding perimeter oriented hybrid forwards and centers. Kelly is not a center. But played the 5 spot in Tasmania?s own version of small ball. Kelly finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds in 25 minutes.

Here?s the 3 out of the 4 FG attempts of Rashard Kelly that Kai defended poorly.
1. The first was a hand off to Rashard. Kai went under the screen. Rashard sank a triple.
2. Kai was caught looking at the ball and failed to locate Rashard, who sank a corner 2.
3. Iso play to end the 2nd quarter. Kai was 2 feet off Rashard. Fortunately for Kai, Rashard missed the long triple.
4. Iso play for Rashard who drove to the paint put on the breaks and turned around for a shot which he made. Kai played good D on this one. But better offense for Rashard.

Though can't blame Kai for the blowout loss, it's just that no development will happen if you don't expose the kid, laterals or not.

Kai needs tremendous work on his lats and learn position-defense to compensate. He's still young so who knows.sigpic

Wembanyama's wingspan is 8' with standing reach of 9'7. I'm not saying Kai (9'4 standing reach, 7'5 wingspan) will be effective against Victor, far from it (especially with the current pace of his development). But NBA teams will have to have some players with ridiculous standing reach/wingspan, of which there are a few, to have a chance against Wembanyama.
Let's face it, even if Kai makes it to the NBA, best case scenario is a bench/role player. You're not going to put him as the primary matchup to a Wembanyama, but he could be a role player/defender in spot minutes against him. Just like teams had heavy/strong guys to defend and foul Shaq in spot minutes during his prime.Last edited by Metta; 10-14-2022, 02:06 AM.

Edit: ah it's Sam Froling, I think his game is more of a traditional big, should be a better matchup for Kai, I'm expecting Kai will get more minutes on his next gameLast edited by Juan Lun; 10-14-2022, 02:02 AM.

The fact is, guards and small strong mobile forwards has more value now because of Curry and Golden State Warriors.
That is why everyone wants to replicate GSW dynasty be it in the NBA or NBL or Euroleague. Only in Asia that we only play our bigs at low post (junmar haha) CBA et.al.
But come Wembayama, he is an freaking alien. NBA teams will at least try to find long 7 footers to at least stand in front of Wemby and bother his shots.
Orlando Magic is my favorite this season because they're playing super tall line up. I also would like to see the tandem of Gobert and Towns be successful.
Sana mabuhay ulit ang bigs in the NBA.
NBA teams now are super cute and small that I find it already annoying haha.

Dagdag kumpiyansa for him playing for Gilas because for sure he will be use....Philippine Malditas to FIFA Womens World Cup 2023

Even now, height is the only thing we can be elite at due to outliers like Kai.
With the advent of the Wembanyama era, all teams are going to need a Wembanyama stopper. 7-footers who can bother his shot. I'm not saying Kai will lock down Wemby, but you will need a lengthy player like Kai to have a chance...hopefully.

Meaning, NBA teams will have tall players who plays like guards aka victor wembanyama. He is the future.
Kai will have value just by being 7 footer and with decent mobility.
