  • The non-PBA route for our young players is good for OH basketball

    Comment

    • A source told SPIN.ph that the flamboyant PBA star guard received a US$2.7-million contract spread over three years by one of the B.League teams.
"“Yes [the offer was] very attractive, pero iba yung utang na loob,” said a source, who bared Romeo's desire to retire with the San Miguel organization."

So it seems the offer from the B-League to Romeo was worth $2.7 million or PHP133 million over 3 years.

Romeo can be the star of B-League and will promote his brand internationally... Sayang Terrence.. PBA can't give you milestone that B-League can give
i doubt its just utang na loob, RSA/SMC must be paying him better or must have given him lifetime perks

or they (SMC) just said no and threatened him with lawsuits and not giving him clearance to play anywhere (i.e. BRP)

If SMC is concern about their player development.. TR will thrive in B-League and will be a star there.. He has his shoes na pwede i market sa Japan.. He will be popular more in Asian market, PBA and SMB can't give that perks to TR.. hanggang local fans lang popularity ng PBA....
simplest explanation for Terrence's rejection of the Japan offer: breach of contract, even if he is interested, i doubt SMC would agree to a buyout or give him the clearance to play abroad, heck SMC might even blackball him through the rights in perpetuity clause of the UPC

          • I think

It is more of Chet being overrated than Kai being underrated.

Kai will climb up anyway in his NBL stint. Chet will probably go down if he still do poorly in US NCAA

But both of them will be drafted. No doubt.

            • With his exposure on the coming NBL season I will not hesitate to say that Kai will be a first rounder for me...we've seen the kid's yearning for more high level competition as part of his preparation for his 2022 draft and he wants to be on the elite level...I will not be surprise if he will be one of the lottery guy for next year's draft...that kid has a mamba mentality to improve himself.

              • Ricci Rivero: Showbiz over B-League?

Dy, however, pointed out that Rivero's situation in different from Thirdy Ravena, Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano and other Filipino players being eyed by Japanese teams under the Asian import quota.

Aside from his UAAP commitment with the Maroons, Rivero also has movie and showbusiness commitments as well as endorsement deals that will be compromised if he decides to take his act to the Japan league.

To convince Rivero to uproot and play elsewhere, Dy said it has to be the perfect situation for the flamboyant guard.

He needs to decide if he wants to be a basketball player first or a showbiz actor.

                  • might be preaching to the choir but i think i will enjoy watching bleague games over pba games in the foreseeable future. NBL games with Kai as well.

                      • I've talked to some IBNers about Ricci's taste for showbiz about a year ago and it seems it's still the case now. Ricci must pursue one of these things. Imo he should chase the B League bag. Thirdy will get endorsements, mas mapera nga doon eh.

This is what ails pinoy basketball in general. Pinoys ballers dont go out of their comfort zone and they just "settle".

Back in the early 2000s, the consensus was that pinoy guards are better than Japanese pint size point guard Yuta Tabuse, but local guards didnt dare to do what Yuta was doing back then, joining summer leagues, camps, pro-ams, semi pros in the US. He worked hard to get that Phoenix Suns call up, unlike the guards here who just settled and got comfy .

Ditto with Taiwanese 6'5 SG Chen Hsin Ann, part of CT's so called Golden Generation. He could have just stayed in Taiwan and just be the superstar that he was, but he dared ventured out and got an invite in the NBA Summer Leagues. When that didnt pan out, he played in China (CBA) where the competition was tougher.

it's not a cultural thing. it's the inevitable consequence of allowing a basketball cartel to exist and call the shots.

malaking investment-ilalabas na pera if a player would want to join summer leagues, attend trainings etc, you need rich benefactors plus the UPC would not allow a plater to leave freely unfortunately which further developed this culture of complacency
