Brad I'm affraid the 2-day period you mentioned for Kai to familiarize with the system & develop chemistry with his Gilas teammates would be almost insignificant. They would mean almost nothing. You see, competitive basketball is a highly complex matter that requires players of a certain teams to get familiar & accustomed to the system of the coach & for players to develop chemistry & cohesion. Those things take considerable period of time & repetitions in training. They are not achieved overnight.

There is reason why the national teams of China, Korea, Iran, etc. train for months (not just days or weeks) to prepare for tournaments like the FIBA Asia Cup, FIBA World Cup or the Olympics.

The 3-week training period with Gilas that coach Tab asked for Kai Sotto is perhaps the minimum period coach Tab thinks would be enough for Kai to assimilate himself of the system & establish enough cohesion with his Gilas teammates. Of course Tab could have asked Kai for a longer training period but knowing the circumstances - Kai's training in the US & Kai's preparation for his stint in the NBL-Australia, coach Tab is ok with the 3-week training period. There's nothing OA about it bro. Its a must.

    • Coach Tab wants Kai to train with the other cadets for a minimum of 3 weeks, kasama ba sa dapat na accumulated time na 3 weeks ang training niya noong February?

Kai must needed to be here at any cost because we want him to unleashed what he learned on his US training... With Matt and Dave out, No PBA players involve and no tune up games prior to this qualifiers eh we need Kai to be there atleast to have some advantage in size...
Yes, but still there's that strong desire to beat Korea & Indonesia apart from winning to be able to qualify. Coach Tab & the entire coaching staffs understand how Pinoy basketball fans crave to beat Korea may it be a crucial game or not.

How many days did Kai train in "secrecy" with Gilas last February? 3 or 4 days?

That's almost insignificant. But still better than zero training with Gilas.

          • Speaking of accumulated time that Kai would be training with Gilas, maybe coach Tab & coach Jong's plan is something like Kai to train for Gilas for 3 weeks for the 3rd window & OQT. Then he trains again for 2 to 3 weeks (depending on his availability) prior to the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup tournament proper. Then in next year's NBL off-season (July to September period) he gets to train again with the National team for about a month. Then for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, he gets to train for about one & a half month or even 2 months, prior to the much awaited tournament.

So that's an accumulated period of at least 4 months of training with Gilas. That's a pretty sufficient period to fully assimilate, adjust & get used to coach Tab's system & establishing enough degree of cohesion or chemistry with Gilas teammates.

All Gilas coaching staff needs is to unleashed Kai's potential and see what his game improve after his year long training in US.. This is the time for experiment, so that in 2023, all of our cards will be ready...
I get your point bro. But we must also take into consideration the mentality of majority of Pinoy basketball fans & stakeholders in which they have a "for the win" mentality. Of course its a balancing act. And since this isn't the main tournament or games that we should go all out for, we take into consideration things like exposure to the players, experiment & learning.

The key is finding the right balance between winning versus learning, getting experience & experiments.

              • The qualifiers is not a "no pressure" for Gilas. If we lose all three games in the 3rd window, we will have to qualify through the second round to be guaranteed a spot in the Asia Cup.

One game is at least critical for Gilas. Even better if we win all three games because that will boost our FIBA standing.

It's Indonesia where the qualifiers don't matter since they are guaranteed a spot being the host.

And I would not discount Indonesia's capability for an upset. They've been itching to beat the Philippines especially with them being the AC host and a co-host of the WC.

And of course, Korea is not a piece of cake of an opponent.

Correct. Its not like, our mere appearance in the 3rd window would get us qualify in the tournament proper. We still need to at least beat Indonesia to qualify & its not a walk in the park to beat Indonesia. While Indonesia is an underdog vs. Gilas, its not like Indonesia only has a lucky punch' chance against Gilas. We can't underestimate Indonesia at all.

Imagine the ridicule that awaits Tab Baldwin if Gilas goes 0-3 in the 3rd window. Everyone will be after for coach Tab's head.

The thing is, the Pinoy fans who strongly clamor for coach Tab to give Kai ample exposure & opportunity to shine in the 3rd window are the very same fans who would crucify coach Tab if he fails to deliver this 3rd window.

                  • Eh yun pala , it's not so important for Kai to play the 1st two games, ang daming pa laro before 2023, so why rush and why is it so important that he has to play in game 1? Diba better that in his 1st Gilas game he performs well, so why not the 3rd game or tune up game

                    • It's really all up to Tab. He set deadlines and he would be the one deciding on this one. I dont have qualms if he wont play Kai. Kai has plenty of opportunities to play this year. I think his sched is way stacked than usual.

Tab could play all he want without Kai and play with Kai so we will see the difference.

Also, almost all in the bubble havent played decent basketball for more than a year. Kai had been training with top tier trainers and scrimmaging with NBA talents.

It is just odd that smart has been running Kai advertisement and some here were predicting that Tab wont play Kai.lol Kai is more an added value with minimal training than not playing Kai. These current opponents arent patsies and Gilas arent confident against them. All of Tab's pronouncements were mere bluffs and he just too prideful to not admit that he needs Kai.

If SBP wasnt really pursuing Kai for this window, he wont be here.

I dont even know that site.haha why would I bet when things is still uncertain though I am leaning that Kai would really play. He didnt travel just to sit on that bench.

If kai would play, he will surely get that stats unless he wont receive passes.

Korea always has this air of confidence playing against Gilas. They would have more confidence playing against newbies this time. This window is the real test for Tab.

                        • Our perimeter players wont have a field day this time around. We wont replicate that thailand drubbing. Korea knows how to defend gilas. They usually put bigger perimeter defenders. I dont think DR will be able to easily score this time. If seasoned PBA players were having a hard time, then how much more this current amateurs.

I am not in anyway downplaying our Gilas players but they need a lot of seasoning and experience. They also need all the help that they need.

Kai will have plenty of opportunities if he play because this current Gilas perimeter players will have a hard time against this Korean NT.

Is Choi playing this window? The 6'7 defensive sf of Korea. He usually man the middle portion of the perimeter against us.

Isaac, I don't think he should be playing tournaments higher than regionals. At the continental level, he's already too small for a center, too slow and stiff for a 4. Plus , Geo knows how to play with Kai. Tamayo has also played with Kai so there should already be some familiarity there. Too bad ildefonso is out due to an injury.

Baltazar, I don't see him worth playing in 2023 unless he indeed gets converted into an able wingman. Carino, I'm sorry for him, he regressed so much under boyet Fernandez. And now boyet is even part of gilas coaching staff LOL SMH
Yes, current bigs of GO, Baltazar and Carino would be liabilities in the world stage. Is Geo already 6'10? I am not sure if he will be able to improve exponentially to warrant a slot on 2023. Although, he could be a NT fixture beyond 2023. I think he needs to have a decent big man coach. Dennis Espino or Noli Locsin would be great for him. Kulang sa skills si Geo and kulang sa gulang. Though he has the drive to compete and he isnt shy to bang inside. I am also hoping that he will always be part of our pool. This training and surrounded by the best would do wonders in his growth as a player.

I think our bigs during 2023 would be Koaume, Kai, Aj and either Junmar or Japeth. If Jc would be our NP, then we might need another big that could play that 3 or 4. Tamayo might be good enough during that time.

Maybe Fernandez, can only impart guard skills bro.hahaha

                            • Why is a gilas team with kai (even with the unfamiliarity) an inferior one?

Lets say kai takes carinos spot in the final 12. Would that team be worse off because kai replaces carino?

It's not about being an inferior team. If you have a 12th man like Rangel you know he will bang bodies and there will be no controversy if he doesnt attempt a shot.

With Kai, he will definitely not be a defensive role player. Good if he is a good defender but everyone agrees there will be a controversy if he doesnt attempt a shot. Kai is not a rim runner nor is he a strong rebounder. That means he needs to get touches. But can he do that in Tabs scheme? Can he score well enough or defend well enough to be a net positive. Tab will have to decide that in practice.
