It's rare that I see the differentiation of "without shoes" or "in sneakers" when I read about a player and people say he's a certain height.
Like the Filipinos in this forum, the Korean scouts are also much obsessed with actual height, that's why they measured Dalph barefooted. I bet because they were burnt before when they saw and signed Abando, Ildefonso, Gutang etc being shorter than their "social media" height.

So yeah, rule of thumb is, add 2 inches to official measured height and you get "height on sneakers". Not an exact science but it's the accepted "fact"

I guess to be fair, the NBA used to be like that. lol

Gilbert Arenas is listed at 6'4". My son stood next to him and Arenas was shorter by at least an inch. My son was 6'3" (in bare feet) at the time. They were both wearing shoes, but I doubt my son's shoes were much higher than Arenas's. The shoes my son was wearing were actually the Adidas Agent Gil shoes. lol

We've also met some Fil-Ams that are now playing at UAAP schools. My son was the same height as the ones listed at 6'5",

Then there's US high schools... My son is normally the same height or taller than a lot of the kids listed as 6'5". But the ones that are around 6'8" and up seem to be pretty accurate to real height.

Panopio was already 6'1 when he was 16,so he didn't grow an inch,he's a normal Filipino who usually stops growing at 15,he listed himself at 6'2 that's because in the US,they usually measure you with shoes on,since no one plays barefoot.Even Kai is being listed at 7'3 or if you ask Quinito he's a legit 7'4 could be even 7'5,but the Japanese measured him at 7'218",he stops growing at 17 pretty unsual for a Filipino.

        • I get your frustration. From what I’ve seen, Kai really should’ve dove into the Ignite bubble and put in the work. If he gets benched, that’s part of the deal—he’s gotta accept it and push through. His current lack of visibility and communication is definitely hurting his chances with scouts. I remember when I was trying to break into a competitive field, I had to grind hard and prove myself before I got any respect or opportunities.

It was his agent's decision to go back to the NBL and spend the summer with Gilas. Higher pay and exposure. I think where they really got it wrong is entering the draft too early. He was too raw last year. Should've entered this 2024 or next year.

Good thing about Panopio is if KBL doesn't pan out (highly unlikely), there will always be Euro offers. He already played in Adidas Next Gen Euroleague and NCAA D1, unlike our homegrown UAAP/NCAA players he doesn't have to rot in the PBA because he's Italian who already played in the States and Europe. He's sort of like in Barefield/Pringle/Holt tier but he's a full-blooded FIlipino. I bet my balls we'll only see him in the PBA when he's like 30-32 years old.

It was really more of a disappointment with Dave. Abando was explosive and hence pulled in audiences despite being undersized. Gutang I think is the tallest of the 3 and being a Filfor had the combination of athleticism and decent dribbling skills.

Danny I, I think deserves some flak for Dave’s underdevelopment. DI forgot that in college in NU he was lean and not muscled bound. IRC it was his quickness that he used against matchups with the top college big Adducul. In the PBA he got muscled bound and slower. Hence he was slow for international play. He got his sons to be muscle bound as well. Dave was a legit guard when he was young. He had a smooth stroke, handles and decent quickness. He got slower though when he grew up and got more muscled bound. Dave lost quickness and explosiveness. As a resukt in KBL they saw an undersized hybrid forward with strength but lacking speed and explosiveness.

Look at Abando he knows his bread and butter is speed and explosiveness he never attempted to get muscled bound. It is rare for Pinoys to be explosive and strong. Dwight is an example but he is rare. Thirdy is another but he is shorter.

Thirdy got slower as well because he gained more muscle. Basketball athletes make this terrible mistake of training like bodybuilders to stay in condition. If you watch the NBA Summer League, you'll see how everybody's doubling up on the lean trend. In today's game mobility, durability and movement efficiency must be top priority not excessive muscle growth.

                  • Really interesting that in basketball, you have actually two height - one with shoes and one without it.

For instance, in barefoot, my height is 172 cm (5'7 3/4). If I wear my shoes, I will be 175 cm (5'9). Pretty interesting.

Justine Baltazar's real height is 6'6 3/4 and that's still 200cm and that's still 6'7 if you think about it - tall and long, especially if he slides to power forward in Converge to play with Arana. In shoes, he will become 203cm and that's 6'8.

Nevertheless, our players' height are really padded.

Yes. The argument is you don't play barefoot. But the problem is if heights were measured with shoes then people would wear thicker soles to increase their height. In my opinion, for standardization, height should be measured barefoot. The NBA has demanded teams give their player's barefoot height since a few years ago. I think most other leagues use that standard as well. I think height padding became popular with MJ. MJ always publicized he was 6'6. But if you look closely and research more he is probably 6'4.5 without shoes, Closer to Westbrook's height. It was even more ridiculous when he was with Wizards when he suddenly became 6'7. During that time Pippen's official height was 6'7. But it looks ridiculous when they stand beside each other when Pip looks 2 inches taller and possibly 3 inches.

Sotto's reps then at EWP are idiots but in hindsight, they made it look as if he was choosing country over career which clearly wasn't the case if you consider that he spent more time in a quarantine hotel than actually training with Tab Baldwin's team (plus Kiefer) hoping the G-League would still let him in the bubble when he came back (but didn't) so by the time he was with the team again in Clark upto the OQT in Belgrade, he had nothing to do with Ignite and had no basketball from July to December (NBL). I think that's what messed up Kai, he might be putting in the work for youtube views... but that's a grand total of 6 games before ever setting foot in Australia where he was too raw and never showed anything until 5 months ago for Yokahama.

He's legit D1 talent, just didn't fit in the system, wherever he plays he will be an impact player.
