  • Nz nbl would be a good start, if he shows promise then maybe a future nbl contract as an Asian SRP which counts as a local players (Aus/nz) like Baba from Japan currently. After a season or two plan the next step.

B league could be another option also but typically the Japanese league has alot of smaller players. 1, 2 and 3 spots are usually Japan players 5’9-6’5 and the 4 and 5 spots imports 6’7-6’11. Less physical, more perimeter based game.

    • With all this turn of events, we are back to speculations. Lets us just wait for another official announcement from EWP and Kai.

I would blame SBP for their insistence that Kai play this window. Tab was vocal about it since last year. Smart also tried to entice them with commercials and other things. It is normal for Kai and his team to grab whatever offer come their way specially that there was prior arrangement from ignite that he could play with gilas. The greatest unfortunate thing with this is that the window and ignites sched overlap with each other. Kai might have really committed with SBP even last year.

I would believe that they are already planning his next steps after this. We only need to wait for their official announcement.

      • Good news for Kai is, he's only 19. He still has time, if only a little. He has to clean up his mess quickly. Hope he can get other opportunities abroad.

What a setback. Sorry for the laguage, but qué puta mierda.

In the Philippines, they are worshipped and adored even more than the average local basketball star. Commercials, seeing their faces on billboards, and all the media hype from back home gave them inflated egos. Both spent their final high school years in the US and were always touted as the Philippines "best" shot at getting a homegrown player to the NBA. However, when they got to the next level that's why reality set in. Kobe spent his time keeping the benches warm in college and Kai knew he was going to do the same on Ignite. So instead of enduring the embarrassment of being labeled as failures, they instead chose to run off. Kobe left his Creighton and Kai left Ignite. See the pattern here? Weak Egos!

For those who keep asking why did Kai choose the Fiba Qualifiers over the GLeague, let me enlighten you on what is already blatantly obvious. Let's start off when Kai signed a contract to Ignite. By signing the contract, just as many people here have posted, he essentially turned pro and became eligible to enter the 2021 NBA draft. The plan was, do well in Ignite, raised his stock, and get drafted this year. Kai did not join Ignite so he could spend 2 or 3 years developing, he joined with the intention of being drafted in 2021. Then things went south. It soon became apparent to Kai that on Ignite he wasn't not getting the numbers he wanted, the minutes he expected and the attention he was accustomed to. So what was the bright idea?? Play in the Fiba qualifiers where he can hopefully get good stats, play extended minutes and once again, be the center of attention.

That's why I criticized all Kai's "extracurricular' activities such as starting his own brand and opening an academy. He became too greedy and disillusioned that he was a superstar in the making. He didn't even stop to think that maybe he might not be ready this year. The NCAA would have been a better option in case he still needed to develop instead of turning pro right away. Look at Rui Hachimura. He spent 3 years at Gonzaga, improving each year, and now he is a solid NBA player.

And that's the tragedy in this situation. Kai has the tools to make it into the NBA if he had a few more years to refine his game. With what has happened the NBA will look poorly on him. Joining Ignite was a privilege and not a right. This is evident with Ignite doing well despite his absence. The GLeague is full of current, former and aspiring NBA players who chose to play there with the hope of making it to the NBA instead of taking better paying gigs overseas. Kai has taken this opportunity and spat it back into the face of the Gleague and the NBA. Many will view him as arrogant, impatient, disrespectful and extremely poor at making decisions. Unless Kai is the second coming of Hakeem Olajuwon, don't expect him to ever make it into the NBA. There are so many talented basketball players in the world that unless you stand out, you won't have a chance of even being noticed. Kai did stand out, but for all the wrong reasons.

Many will also say that Kai is just a kid and he can't be blamed for any of this. It doesn't matter what EWP, SBP or his parents "advised" him to do. At the end of the day the buck stops with him and he has to take accountability for his career. If he is old enough to drive, join the military or get married, he should be considered a big boy who can make big boy decisions.
It's not that Kai can't be blamed for this, but I don't think he deserves the brunt of it. You accuse the kid of becoming "greedy", but the greed comes from the people around him. All the business plans, marketing, and side gigs don't come from him, but the people who are paid to handle him. He has handlers to literally handle all of the off-court business and a family around him that co-signs on these decisions. Yet, they failed miserably and chose to make a quick buck over prioritizing Kai's best interests.

This fails to consider both traditional Filipino values, the amount of control Kai has on the people making decisions for him, and undersells the level of maturity of an 18 year old kid. Much older people have been ruined at the hands of people they trust. I do agree that the decisions of the people around him will be reflected on him, but that does not make it fair. It's just not a very realistic take and it unfairly assigns a majority of the blame to Kai.

          • Kai only needs a solid Gilas stint in third window against lester prosper ( if korea gonna send the sangmu team) and solid games against slaughter and fajardo.. to gain traction as a 2nd round draft and stash pick..

Basta what has done is that them and ignite mutually part ways..

As for people outside kai...no comment but needs to be humbled even since since day 1.. if they dont change..

Gilas would be the last option. Very last option. I don't see Europe and Australia as being done deals either. Kai isn't really a top prospect. Europe is full of young talent from all over the world and many his age are already seasoned pros. He could join a team in the lower tier or but that would not be good marketing move for his "brand." Australia has very limited spots on its rosters. The debacle of him signing a contract but not playing a single game for Ignite will not bode well for him in the eyes of management anywhere. Would anyone want to sign a player who might suddenly change his mind and decide that doesn't want to play for your team? Remember, Kai is only a superstar in the Philippines, nowhere else. Kai might just end up in the CBA. Lots of former NBA players go there and the level of competition is ok. If he does well there, then other opportunities may open up.

              • Sigh.

See you in 5 years IBN.

Maybe there will be another kid to carry the dream at that point.

                • The mods will surely merge this thread with that other nuthugger/wanker/"take me back" thread because it's pointless to post and be completely disagreeable to those who differ to your opinion. Anyone who's been here in IBN long enough would know these threads end up getting merged anyway.

In the first place, it was a mistake for him to play for Gilas just based on how difficult it was and still is to travel with all the quarantine and testing protocols regardless of what happened in Qatar/Clark. Him being in the US still puts him in a good position to develop his game compared to, God forbid, going to Ateneo. Even playing in the PBA with Gilas as a guest team is a massive step down in his development considering he was already learning in an NBA-type environment. It's way too early to say if going pro now in Japan/China/Australia will do him any good since the Sotto family are basically rooted in the Southern US (traditionally a big man factory) despite the mess that EWP made. Even scrimmaging in the Atlanta area with a lot of other ex-pros and G-League hopefuls would be better. The NBA Draft is still about 6 months away so there's always that Satnam Signh chance someone drafts him to stash him in the G-League and the rest is up to him and if all his team affiliate's bigs get injured, but anyone who genuinely believes "Brian Shaw is an idiot" or "Kai needs the ball in the post" or "bakaw silang lahat" has unfortunately fallen in love with his hype made by content creators that make the Snow Baduas of the world cringe.

Well they (Kai and EWP) better make some sort of response soon because they certainly aren't looking too great in the eyes of everybody. Rumors or not...the alibis and excuses of skipping IGNITE to play for Gilas because he wasn't getting the minutes or touches or exposure is making him and his team look like primadonnas hate to say it..and no...no one is buying the "honoring a gilas commitment to play for country" when everyone knows he will always be welcome at Gilas in the future when the MAIN immediate goal was suppsedly make it to this years NBA draft.

Is a commitment to take a job as a photographer for two events bad when you have a prior agreement with the 1st client that he will allow you?lol The misfortune here was that both event coincide with each other. The best approach was that the 2nd client should give way because client 1 was the first to booked. Kai and his team tried to cater both clients unfortunately client 1 had a change of mind and would not want to disrupt their current working setup.

Your insinuation that he was primadonna or because they want more touches was pure BS. The agreements were done last year so primadonna or no touches wasn't part of equation from the get GO.

                        • Lol sbp commitment to okay for nt is a very bs excuse hahaha why really people here really believe its national team first before your professional contract obligations..hahaha

The more noble thing was playing for country asking permission to your professional commitments and let that employer decide if you will be allowed.or not..

                          • The likely scenario for Kai these days would be for sure he would play for Gilas 3rd window then just prepare for the draft like Kenyon Martin Jr last year. Also, they should just negotiate or talked to teams who would be interested in getting Kai.

I believe Kai would have performed better than Isiah Todd during this stint.

In everything, SBP is full of crap they were all full of personal agenda and wasn't mindful of the best interest of Kai and all basketball loving pinoys. That is also the reason teams were half-hearted supporting them kasi selfish.

Kai and his team would ALWAYS ENTERTAIN OFFERS. They need to be compensated and that is normal. Kai is the only one working for his whole family these days.

SBP wasn't para sa bayan but was always para sa promotion ng smart and MVP groups. Those greedy MVP boys from Tab to Panlilio were all after their performance and not after Kai's welfare.
