  • I think it's almost a month now since SBP submitted to FIBA QBM's documents that will prove his eligibility to play for team Pilipinas as a local player yet there's still no result. I wonder what is taking FIBA this long to decide?
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

This is probably it, if they want the sure fire way QMB is probably required to play a few seasons on a local pro league (pba, not sure if mpbl counts) but with Kai injured for a long period there is a pressing need for QMB now

I thought the last press release by SBP said they, the SBP, were still verifying it? Is there news that they already sent it to FIBA?

          • all pertinent documents including that obvious thing had already been submitted therefore the ball is in FIBA's hand now.

i've not seen any official news as well if SBP submitted or not. The only thing I found is via Homer Sayson -> https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba/...a2244-20250206

and his reporting isnt always spot on.

For the past three months, the SBP has been working on authenticating QMB's Philippine passport and other documents to back up his claim to eligibility to play for Gilas as a local. But the process takes time

“We're checking the green passport of QMB. We also filed before Fiba minus the green passport and checking what they will label him,” said Panlilio in a text message.

I don't even know what Panlilio exactly meant.

According to this SBP is still checking QMBs PH passport until now. Not sure why it is taking so long. I don't understand the process of applying for eligibility without providing his PH passport to FIBA. Sounds pointless to me.

Reading between the lines. They doubt the validity of QMB's passport. They'd submit it to FIBA if they were confident.

there should be no question about QMB having a US passport. he was born and raised there. so the question will be his PH passport. i am not sure why SBP cant coordinate with DFA. they should have all the records of anyone who requested a passport. they are the only agency who approves and releases these right?

                      • Hell even SBP can ask the DFA could to forge or manipulate a PH passport whenever they want. It would be risky but seeing how corruption can be seen on every part of Philippines identity, it would be possible to do it. Just money talks, I guess.

                        • Sir lemon,

we don't need to dip our fingers to do some dirty transactions.

it really ain't cool moving forward.

rather SBP and it's other stakeholders should invest to kids with potentials esp. with height 6'7 and above

to study and play in the HS level here.

I think the Colin Akowe and Racine Kane route is a good template

I don't think it will fall in that so-called human trafficking thing or child abuse because the narrative is about child education

in relation to sports development specifically basketball development. certainly with parents and guardians consent.

if it is related to labor thing then that is already a red flag.

obviously kids of African descent are majority that we've also seen either basketball, volleyball, football both for mens and womens

now back to QMB, I remember one of the complain of the Millora-Brown family specifically from his late Dr. MD Grand Daddy

is the legworks on obtaining the docs same remarks from Ron Harper Sr. wherein eventually his Jr. obtained that after his 16th birthday

according to some of the old forumers here.

for now, the important thing is the big dude are willing to play for us and he is genuinely committed to the program.

as for the FIBA's verdict, well majority of the members of their respective national teams in the Asia-Oceania are still in the tail-end of their respective club commitments

I rather hear a verdict during the off-season either by May or first week of June.

otherwise if FIBA releases their official statement either positive or negative few weeks before the actual conclave in Aug.

                          then that's a bummer.

Why would they file anyway before checking his passport? No way that's standard.

                            • If I'm to choose between RJ Abarrientos & SJ Belangel as additional guard for Gilas (in case coach Tim would want additional players), I would take the latter. Offense wise, I think Abarrientos is better, but on the defensive aspect, Belangel is the better guy. I like Belangel's "gulang" & "angas" which he displayed during his stint with Gilas in 2021 under coach Tab Baldwin. During that time, it was Belangel who started for coach Tab, but you can attribute that to familiarity since Belangel was coach Tab's point guard at Ateneo.

I think Belangel has really improved in the last 3 years or so & he is doing really well in the KBL.

This would cost SBP alot of money since, his agents already probably looking overseas and probably have offers already.
