Cone said Bennie can play the 3. And Quiambao and even Carl can slide to 3 as well.

I feel the issue with Bennie is that defense is not his strength, so we will need to surround him with a good enough defensive team when he's on the floor. Either a good interior defender like Kai, AJ, and Japeth, or in the absence of an interior defender, good enough defenders at the 1, 2, and 3 spots so that penetration is limited.

Ange officially is not under contract with any of the Philippine stakeholders who control the SBP , so he's not priority , which is sad and really not smart.
Not smart to not include Ange for consideration because we don't exactly have a plethora of interior defenders. After Kai and AJ, it's just Japeth, and maybe QMB if he's indeed eligible.

Getting another eligible interior defender will help us get another NP who can take over when need by while not sacrificing much on defense. It's easier to have a good defense when you have a good interior defender on the floor.

What do you think of QMB's rim protection?

Speaking of defenders, I also think we need another helper in the 3/4 spot aside from Malonzo. I'm thinking Cone wants Tamayo to have this big leap as a defender, but right now he's still building the correct habits.

From what I've seen in his games in UP, I think QMB's been pretty good in the UAAP as a shot deterrent, and he's blocked some shots near the basket too. Timing his contests looks good too. We'll have something to work with if he's eligible.

          • QMB is a good interior defender but wouldn't necessarily call him a great shot-blocker. ideally, 2 of kai, edu, qmb should be on the floor at the same time with tim cone's system, with tamayo alternating at 3 & 4 depending on matchups

            • If QMB indeed has papers to support his eligibility and if SBP secured Kouame’s exemption then we are set… Plus Kai, AJ, Tamayo and KQ, we no longer need a tall NP. By 2027 WC and 2028 Olympics we can aspire for the moon by targeting either Jalen Green or Dylan Harper as our NP if by then they won’t receive a call- up from USA Basketball. Libre mangarap..

              • Some people really look bad in uaap setting, dont let it fool you that the numbers of qmb ( 12 8 reb per game wouldnt translate the same stats in gilas).. he runs the floor well.. isnt really a mismatch in the perimeter..and perimeter touch can be developed..
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..

                  • Problem with QMB is that his talents are being "hidden" by UP's idiot offense.

                      Sir Fil,

Jaleen Green born Feb. 9, 2002(22 yrs. old)

Dylan Harper born Mar. 2, 2006(18 yrs. old)

all played in a sanctioned tourney.

amongst the two , DH has a fighting chance to get an exemption assuming they could obtain their respective docs early next year.

Reference: FIBA Internal Regulation Book 3(rev. 26 Mar. 2022) Players with Two or More Nationalities with Previous Registrations, Article 19 a,b i, ii, iii; Article 20.c-d; 21-23; Article 74.e

                      • Curious Case of 6'10 Kamaka Hepa and 6'1 JJ Mandaquit

who allegedly obtain their respective ph docs before turning 16 but opted to play in a sanctioned tourney for Team USA youth team.

Familiarity is also a big factor in opting out of a Philippine passport. Kamaka Hepa was a high school all-American from Alaska. He was able to get a Filipino passport before the age of 16. But the 6’10 power forward decided to stay in America where he grew up, and was last seen playing in the Latvia Estonia Basketball League.

According to Fil-Am Nation Select, Mandaquit was able to get a Philippine passport before turning 16 years old, meaning that the crafty guard can still be eligible for Gilas Pilipinas.
This, however, is provided that Mandaquit no longer suits up for Team USA in the U18 or seniors’ teams.

                        • As even youtubers know, the main players that need to be added to the pinoy nt from 2025 onwards are qmb, abando and heading. The three vital reasons are: they are as good as, if not better and younger, than some of the players in the present nt pool as 2-way players; none are liabilities in team defense chores; and most important of all, the pinoys have full flexibility in choosing who to use as np, or even playing without one, as both power rebounding/ blocking bigs and reliable snipers will be available.

In other words, the team can match well with nz with or without brownlee. The worst thing that can happen to the pinoy nt would be to become dependent on an np to win games, or at least scare the bejesus out of top 10 teams. You basically have 4 local scoring unstoppables -- kai, abai, rhenz and heading -- who dont suck on defense too. And if edu and malonzo are healthy and available, corey webster and other chefs will have a hard time even with nz-style home cooking of games.

I can argue the "scoring unstoppables" term but it's moot because i agree with your whole point and I am in favor of that direction. Basically be like Japan NT without the NBA guys.

I think Abando can only play 2 in FIBA. He's more of an off-ball guy, and he's only 6'2". His length might make up for his lack of height for a wing, and I remember him being able to stay in front of players in the last WC. I think Justin Gutang could be an alternative, as I think he can play both guard positions at 6'3" and is athletic as well. Kaso nga lang, shooting is not his strength.

June Mar's PnR defense (and defense in general) is a weakness in FIBA, actually. Got attacked in the China game in the Asiad, the Brazil game in the OQT, and the NZ game in the past window too.

                              • Without an np, the pinoy nt will play a more aggressive offense and defense. Iba kapag sariling sikap na. Once the team learns how to win and lose without making excuses, it will go far.
