So better pick much younger players who can use for more than 5 years or more... And we all know CTC, he will not pick more players and he will stick to his current players even that he should expand it atleast 16 to 18 players in case that most of those players are not available ...
He will be forced to expand his pool after the FIBA Asia Cup or once the regression of Newsome and Fajardo's play become evident. You've mentioned Schonny and Alec as possible replacement for Newnew in the near future. Ken Tuffin was mentioned a couple times before and many of us will agree that he should be given a tryout at least. He is at least 6'3 and a known shooter.

he can guard siguro slow footed small forwards for sure, but to throw him on guards like Webster, Arakji etc. He'll get cooked without a doubt and we've seen it before.
On the second thought, you are correct. Newsome's role and capabilities within Tim's system is really really hard to replace. If Schonny Winston can have the defensive IQ and tenacity of Chris he can be the one. And Schonny is the better offensive player over Newsome imo.

      • qmb should be integrated asap. even if he will not be in the final lineup, his height will be valuable during practices as he can simulate the height of opponents like how ange is being used by ctc

Alec Stockton is the main guy who can replace Newsome's role... He's good defender in the PBA and can score too... And he's tough too...

Tuffin is good option but if you look at the capabilities Newsome brings, It's not Tuffin we are looking too.. I'm not too much familiar with college scene (maybe except for Quiambao, Phillips or QMB), so I don't know who are those players can play like newsome.. but Stockton for me is the nearest guy who can say can play same role as Newsome...

You think so? Alec is obviously better in defense while Schonny is the more capable scorer. If Alec can improve leaps and bounds in orchestrating and ball security, why not? He averaged 3.4 assists and 2.4 turnovers last conference which is an awful 1.42 assist/turnover ratio. He is 6'2 and with high motor just like Newsome and Thompson so I understand that he is an interesting prospect for Gilas.

              • Stockton is much more similar to Scotty, good rebounder, good off ball movement. Not really the best imo when it comes to decision making as a PG

But Thompson's court generalship is way much better than Stockton's. Alec can still improve though in that area but it needs to be fast tracked if he is to contend for a Gilas gig.

But does this team really need a pg?Would a Heading playing combo do worse or better with more perimeter firepower?

with brownlee, no. but with a different non-playmaking NP they'll need a legit PG with playmaking abilities similar to alapag/castro/tenorio

                        • Guys, since Stockton is FIBA ineligible & there's no certainty of him getting a FIBA exemption anytime soon, I'll set my sights on another combo point guard in the PBA who is some years younger than current Gilas guards Iskati Thompson, Chris Newsome & CJ Perez - Schonny Winston. While Winston isn't your pass-first point guard (and neither is Thompson, Newsome or Perez), I think his playmaking is not far behind Iskati Thompson. Hindi nagkakalayo, ika nga. But I'm confident to say that Winston's playmaking skills are better than either Newsome or Perez. Let's face it, both Newsome & Perez are natural wings (2-guards or shooting guards). Winston on the other hand is a natural combo guard. I think Winston transitioning to point guard won't be that difficult.

That's why I strongly believe that Winston should be integrated to the Gilas program ASAP in anticipation of the inevitable retirement from the national team of the ageing Chris Newsome. Kailan pa natin e integrate si Winston sa Gilas? If naka retire na si Newsome? Why wait for that when Winston can start learning & assimilating coach Tim's system soon so that by the time Newsome finally retires from Gilas, gamay na ni Winston ang system ni coach Tim & he has already established bond & chemistry with his Gilas teammates?

This is similar to the US practice of getting younger guys to be practice players for the main team.

I think if Schonny Winston plays with Gilas for around 3 window qualifiers (that is 6 games), magagamay na nya yung triangle offense ni Tim Cone as well as the team's defensive scheme. Not only thru actual Gilas games & tune-up games that Schonny is going to assimilate himself with the system but would also thru team practices/scrimmages.
