except for the "The Director" whom I don't think was schooled by the other PG of the other backyards and held his own out there
we all know what happened to to "The Flying A" and Ra Ra Rah esp. when they faced that cerebral fat PG of SK during those heart breaking Asian Games of 98 and 2002 respectively
Sir Dotch has a very rich information on that historic moments of 1997 to 2002 timeline
despite of that coach Go Johnny Be Good and coach Olsen occupies the top 3 of the best PG.
There was a small gap between Johnny A Era (that includes Olsen and Bal David) and Jimmy Alapag Era. Maybe 2 years . 3 years maximum. Also worth noting that Philippines, under the "leadership" of BAP was twice suspended in the early 2000s. So basically, PHL was not represented during that time in Asia Basketball
Mike Cortez was supposed to carry the torch together with LA and Paul Artadi. But that didnt pan out. Luckily LA stick around to become one of the greats, but not in his early years. But Mike Cortez was 1 of the best point guard in the whole Philippines , PBA included, 2000 to 2002. He was even drafted by Alaska, sort of an heir apparent to the Johnny A..
Under BAP, the Philippines could have featured an all-amateur team with Mike at the point, Cyrus at 2, Yap at 3, Arwind at 4 and EVil at 5. But no, BAP is stupid
Helterbrand was popular back then mainly because he played for GSM, but he is not called the OG "Boy Dribble" because of his playmaking skills, but because he dribbles to much without setting up plays, much like Ver 2.0 Kieffer
LUCKILY, a virtual unknown decided to come home and tried out for Ron Jacob's 2002 Busan Asiad Team. Ron Jacobs was even quoted he was one of the best players in camp. But no way a virtual unknown can unseat established PBA stars in that 2002 Team. Take note that, PHL only brought 1 pure PG in Busan in Olsen. The other guards were Noy Castillo and DDH.
That unknown turned out to be Top 3 best PG that ever donned the Philippines jersey.

PLAYBACK LIVE tonight at 9 with BOSS HOMER SAYSON 1 hour lang tayo kasi may live din ang Purple Hub sa PLAYBACK nila. Topic: 1. QUENTIN MILLORA-BROWN...
Around 56 minute mark
Maybe this is also why Malonzo was suddenly confirmed to be eligible to play as a local despite no one following the case closely expecting he'd be eligible. Probably off a technicality like this too.
Hopefully QMB can be cleared as a local. Would change the dynamics for our program big time, and give us insurance for AJ's oft-injuries but also Mike Phillips still not being cleared to be considered a local and also Ange not getting that exception yet.

QMB's being a local would be tremendous for us as we won't be feeling the pressure too much of having a thin and injury-prone frontline. We can have a little sigh of relief that if Edu or Kai are not available, we would have someone close to their capabilities with us. I would rank Ange a little higher than QMB because Ange got to play as the King Eagle and was MVP so he knew how to play as the biggest dog in the yard. QMB still plays like a support player and not the main man. Of course, the crocodile guards of UP and the lack of offensive system in UP doesn't help QMB develop more.
If we also get local status for Ange and Phillips then our frontline will be set for the next ten years. Exciting times ahead for Gilas. I can only imagine the excitement Cone has at the prospect of creating an Asian-dominant Gilas team. I want to see a full-force Japan and full-force Gilas battle. Of course, Australia and New Zealand are on a whole other level.sigpic

If QMB is indeed a local, we will have that backup interior defender, and thus we can go for a more offensive-minded NP. Oftana, Malonzo, and Quiambao might have less pressure to prevent dribble penetration, since they will still have a safety net in the absence of Kai and AJ (although I still think they need to be at least capable of preventing dribble penetration and staying in front of their man). There will also be less pressure on calling up perimeter players who can defend.

If what Homer is saying is true - that QMB had a green passport (phased out in 2007) as a kid and the "issue" is he didn't have it renewed until after he turned 16, this might be a technicality type thing and such a thin line that it might be hard for FIBA to fight back on this and deny eligibility as a local? Assuming SBP pushes hard for it of course which they should. It'd also deprive the player of professional opportunities given you need to be a local eligible player to be an Asian import in leagues like Japan and Taiwan.

Do you guys remember Roosevelt Adams Case?
Saying he obtained a Passport at 9 years old. But he lost it.
Then, when we ask if dfa can just retrive it. There were some who said "Nasunog na" the old files when there was a fire.
Then suddenly. When Adams is like 28 yrs old. Magically, he found his passport. And deemed eligible.
Hehehe
Cant move on in that Case.
But hope QMB will be a local

i suddenly remember this article
Learning from the curious case of Quentin Millora-Brown
Right now, there are several other players who have stumbled upon the same problem like 15-year-old Fil-Am Quintin Millora-Brown. He was a few months late getting his Philippine passport.
“They didn’t act in time,” said Gilas assistant Coach Josh Reyes who kept Millora-Brown on his radar for the longest time.
“We actually went to him and talked to him to have his papers done. And a year passed and they haven’t done it so he’s 16 now and we can’t do anything anymore.”
In acquiring Millora-Brown, Reyes went the extra mile in an effort to pull some strings and speed up the process for the Fil-American prodigy.
The instruction given to them was for Millora-Brown’s grandparents to accompany him to the embassy and get a passport. That apparently did not happen.
“These are the tough examples that happen. Somehow the Filipino families in the states don’t feel the urgency of the matter,” said a frustrated Reyes.Philippine Malditas to FIFA Womens World Cup 2023

I think one of the best process to fast track an exemption moving forward aside from the obvious part like playing for a number of years in the domestic league, acquiring pertinent documents like NBI Clearance, SSS, TIN among others, if ever putting up a local business is a good endeavour as well.
but one thing, that is most impactful is acquiring and having an official/active Voter's Identification Number and Voter's ID as well
participating on all National and Local elections moving forward would cement that "strong domestic connection".
I'm not well-verse on every provisions "The Voter's Registration Act of 1996 RA 8189" and "Dual Citizenship Act RA 9225" on all who re-acquired Philippine Citizenship
but one thing I'm sure, ALL Filipino Citizen be it local born or naturalized shall and must enjoy FULL civil, economic and POLITICAL rights as the citizen of the country.
I don't think the Sec-Gen and the powerful Technical Committee wherein a Filipino Lawyer holds one of the chairs will oppose or question those thing
if they found out that those in the candidate for exemption are ALSO AN ACTIVE IN THE ELECTION LANDSCAPE OF THE PHILS.
I stand to be corrected on this.
for me, it's the "RULE OF THUMB".

Mikes game was perfect for a naturalize player.. also good that he can coexist with willie miller and jimmy alapag who is more of a 3 point gunner..
Really unfair to Jason Castro as he was woth the team when we got silver finish not jimmyTo becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

The timing of the QMB news is weird to me. The malonzo-is-eligible reveal happened when he's already in the PBA and under contract, meaning he can't entertain offers from other leagues i.e. japan bleague, kbl, etc. In fact, malonzo is already on his way to ginebra when the news dropped (traded 3 months later).
This QMB news directly harms his pba prospect, but benefits him and gilas program directly.
