Cone is rather easy to outcoach, as his offensive and defensive patterns are easy to read. The fact that an execrable nt coach but a pba-quality coach, like seyer can handle and control his ginebra team is the best proof of that.
Cone, like all previous ginebra coaches, overly rely on rabid noisy ginebra fans. Relying on noisy fans for nt games is not good coaching. And cone has serious issues here. First, the arrogance in not naming a complete 15-16 man nt pool. Sending an 11-man team as he did disrespects other nts who always try to send their 12 best players. Worst, he didnt include an extra legit big like kouame or other 6'9 lnaturalized or local player, an extra international game scoring pecialist like heading or even parks, and a 2-way specialist like baltazar or abando in the pool.. Fooling around with the nt pool is exactly what cone did. Losing prime bigs like kai and aj is bad; but not having ready replacements for them is worse.
Getting too many ginebra players, or an unreliable youth like amos, against say, nz, aus, sk or jpn nt teams is not wise. The non-playing kobe paras is still better than amos in the international game.
Worst, the pbs absconded on its main raison d'etre and duty to look for financial sponsors for extra nt-class players. Why, the sponsors of the pampanga lanterns can help the pool-related expenses of baltazar. The financial limits imposed on the nt by the sanmig group, must never be the funding limit of the pbs in creating strong nt pools all year.
Besides, the players in the pool, even if they were not chosen in a particular match, say against nz, would still be proud and privileged by being named as nt players. Every match requires a different set or look: some require extra bigs, some need extra bigtime shooters, some need bigger and stronger defenders, etc.
We already know that not all the best players will be available, and some opponents will be extra weak. So, other nt-class pool players like heading, parks, baltazar abando or bolick are more than worthy against, say hongkong or china. All nt players deserve rest. It is really not too bright to expect players to play more than one major tournament or two qualifying home-away nt games a year. If the pinoy nt coach has no Plan B to have competent replacements for say missing both kai and aj, then that coach is simply undeserving of being an nt coach.
