Its time we move forward by picking players who are going to be serviceable for Gilas in at least 2 years time instead of players who are just mere "band-aids".
We will need to get good defensive bigs. In the pool, only Kai (who has improved on D) and AJ are decent in the defensive bigs department. Carl has a ways to go, and he's probably a system defender at best. Best candidates I can find so far are Kemark Carino and maybe Clifford Jopia.

If we can't find a defensive big, we need a good defensive wing like Will Navarro or even guys like Jacob Bayla so that we don't allow easy penetration whenever we have a lineup that has neither Kai nor AJ on the floor. In the pool, Dwight and JB are the only wings that have shown to be able to guard their man. I don't know if Oftana and Malonzo can stop dribble penetration on their own, although they can rotate when needed. Whenever Oftana, Malonzo, or Quiambao is the 3, I think we'll need Kai and/or AJ on the floor.

Those are the two holes I'm seeing on defense. An extra defensive big and/or wing in case neither Kai nor AJ are on the floor. Yes, we'll defend on scheme, but we need the personnel. Otherwise, easy baskets for the opponent.

SBP should move heaven and earth to make QMB local. A young frontline of Kai, Edu, QMB and Tamayo is servieable for at least 10 years.

              • Between QMB & Mike Philipps, I think the latter has the better chance of getting a FIBA exemption since the latter has been enrolled & have been playing in local college basketball for several years now. I mean Philipps have involved himself in the Philippines local basketball longer than QMB. Remember that QMB is just a "one & done" player at UP & is expected to climb into the pro ranks next year.

                • I wonder what is the actual height of QMB on barefoot? Maybe he is just 6-foot-9 but he seems to have an impressive wingspan. Maybe heightwise, mas matangkad sa kanya ng kunti si Junmar Fajardo, but I think in terms of wingspan, QMB is longer than Junmar.

                  • If we're
going by previously stated measurements, w/o shoes JF is at 6'10 (or 6'9 1/2 i think) w/ 7'1 wingspan while QMB is at 6'9 and 7'4 wingspan

QMB, Mike Philipps and Barefield, now I dont know how Chua would
do it but if he could in the next 2-3 years manage to make them eligible along with a core of Kai, Edu, Dwight, Malonzo, Tamayo, Perez, a younger NP and coach Tim, we'd be untouchable in Asia outside of AU & NZ.

He gets things done in the PBA, that I hate.

He will get things done with Gilas in FIBA (hopefully), that I like very much.

QMB at most is 6'9 barefoot while Phillips could only be 6'6 barefoot. I don't think Phillips is taller than Balti who is 6'6.5. So between the two QMB is more of a rare species in Philippine basketball. Realistically though, Phillips has the edge on exemption having more established locally.

                          • Can Nocum & Clarito be part of Gilas at Sea/Asean level competition? The latter is such a unique talent, we rarely see a pinoy bb player bully their way driving to the basket. I think even the Mags import noticed it. Then we have Nocum the reincarnation of Samboy Lim.

Too early to tell about Nocum while for Clarito, there's an awkwardness to his game as he moves similar to our local Thais, Indonesian brothers' playstyle, thus the gameplan of opposing teams dont really prepare for him. So when he does well it always come as a surprise. But once he is scouted (& respected) we'll know for sure

                              • Even our above-averaged collegiate players could be serviceable for Gilas in SEA basketball level. Yes, some SEA countries, Indonesia in particular, have improved thru the years, but the rest have minimal to close to no improvement at all. Thailand for instance which played with Tyler Lamb, Morgan & Frederick Lish in last year's Asian Games was far from impressive in that tournament. It could not even beat Bahrain & got routed by Jordan by 30+ pts.

And of course Philippine basketball has also improved in the last 4 years or so.

My point here is that, kahit sino namang PBA player who will be included in Gilas team that will play in the SEA Games or SEABA would be capable of playing well in that level of competition. Let's not be deceived by last year's SEA Games where we got upset by Cambodia. Remember, that Cambodian team was composed mainly of world imports. It was an all-important team. I don't think we will seeing that kind of team in next year's SEA Games.

I say, teams from the Persian Gulf region - Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, are more competitive than SEA teams.
