    Because they’re still doing okay.

They qualified for the Olympics in 2021, finished 5th in Asia Cup 2022, and qualified for WC in 2023.

For them to seriously drop rankings, they need to finish outside the top 8 in Asia Cup 2025 and not qualify for the 2027 WC.

We were 33rd before Asia Cup 2022 and then 41st after finishing out of the top 8. (Thanks Chot!)

That’s why it’s crucial we finish high on the 2025 Asia Cup.

It will determine our pot group for the 2027 WCQ.

If we avoid Australia and/or NZ by being in the same pot, then that’s a huge boost.

          Correct.
Iran turning out to out the best Asian team in the 2019 FIBA World Cup earned the Iranians a spot in the 2021 Olympics.

Although Iran is on a decline post-2019 World Cup, it hasn't done that badly in the last 4 years as it finished 5th in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup & qualified in the 2023 World Cup. Though Iran isn't the same team anymore as its golden generation team with the retirement from the national team of legendary wingman Samad Nikkah Bahrami & Hamed Haddadi obviously in the twilight of his career (Haddadi eventuually retired from national team service last year), Iran remains to be a competitive team which can beat any contender team in Asian basketball. We've seen that in last year's 2023 Asian Games where muntikan na nila tinalo ang Gilas in the quarterfinals. This despite Iran missing several key players.

I think current Iran team is no longer a strong contender for the top 4 in the Asia-Oceania basketball, but I think it still remains as a dangerous team to any contender team in Asian basketball.

This is 8 year FIBA ranking cycle... Since 2017, Iran did great

2nd place in 2017 FIBA Asia cup

23rd in 2019 FIBA World cup, highest among Asian teams

            Qualified for 2021 Olympics

Only Asian team that has good record vs Australia since 2017 (2-3 vs Aussies)...

5th place in 2022 FIBA Asia cup

That's the reason they are still high, the biggest impact is their qualification to Olympics that will take effect until 2029 under 8 year FIBA ranking cycle...

Under 8 year FIBA ranking cycle, Iran will remain top of rankings because of their 2021 Olympic participation... That's huge points... Just look at Japan and South Sudan, both tremendously leap forward in FIBA rankings due to their Olympic participation plus good performance there... We can't surpass Iran until we qualify for 2028 Olympics or that 8 year rule for Iran will lapse, maybe in 2029....

Both teams are on transition actually with Korea making a revamp of its roster (I think it has about 6 new players in its current roster) & Iran no longer have its vaunted 1-2 punch in Hamed Haddadi & Samad Bahrami & now has some young but very promising players in its current roster.

Players to watch out for Iran are 6-foot-7 wingman Mohammed Amini & 6-foot-9 power forward Parsa Fallah. The 20-year old Amini has the makings of a Samad Nikkah Bahrami while the 21-year old Fallah is registering impressive stats in his sophomore year in an NCAA Div. 1 school in the US. I expect these guys to spearhead the future of Iran basketball.

                  • Where can I buy Gilas Jerseys?

Will visit PH this November after a decade of being abroad.

Any online shops? Most of what I see in eBay is of poor quality.

                    • They usually sell jerseys in the arena during Gilas gamedays.

In rotations, though, he seems to lose his man or he's too deep in help. I dunno if it's because of the team defense breaking down too easily or if he's lost his timing.
If Navarro's aiming to get recalled, he has to play better D, and get some shooting. We need good defenders at the 3, especially if Oftana and Malonzo don't improve much on that end in FIBA.

Despite Oftana's struggle in the recent OQT games & the tune-up games that Gilas played prior to the OQT, I still believe that in the Asia-Oceania basketball level, Oftana would be serviceable. I'm confident his shots will fall in the next 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifying windows & the FIBA Asia Cup tournament proper. He just needs to boost his confidence & some reps in the FIBA game.

Maybe prove himself on defense as well while he's at it. Need him and/or Malonzo to be a better man-to-man defender for us.

We need at least one good defender at the wing or bigman positions on the floor once JB retires.
