Coach Tim Cone seems to have some high regards on Carl Tamayo describing Tamayo as a potential star of Gilas in 3 to 4 years time. I hope Tamayo will be like our version of 6-foot-7 power forward Oshin Sahakian of Iran's golden generation national team. Magkasing height kasi sila ni Sahakian & almost with the same skill set. They also both play physical basketball. One thing I like about Tamayo is that malakas talaga ang loob maglaro. He showed lots of promise being a member of Batang Gilas U-19 team together with Kai Sotto & AJ Edu (who suffered an ACL injury in 2019). Then way back in 2021, he again showed promise with Gilas cadet team composed of amateur players (back then) & coached by Tab Baldwin. Tamayo was 20 yrs old at that time & he already showed grit, guts & of course skills against teams like Korea (where Gilas beat twice that year) & Jordan (in an invitational tournament in Jordan in 2021)."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. The pinoy nt needs about 5 local and less expensive versions of brownlees in the 6'6 to 6'9 range. Tamayo sort of fits into this mold. Those are the core needed to be in the top 20 for decades. There are enough local and filfor bigs at 6'10 and taller. One may select any 3 of 5 for presence in year-long series of tournaments. The remaining 4 would be guards that are either like ramos or heading at their prime.
These nt "specs" are clearly realistic and available. You just need two coaches -- likely one local and one foreign --who have records proving that they know how to win the top class international battles.
Isipin niyo na lang kung pba coach at trainer lang pinanggalingan ni carlos yulo. Pinulot lang siya sa kangkungan ng maynila kung ganuon. It is factually impossible for an all-pba team to come anywhere near an olympic bronze. The quality gap in players and coaches against top world baller teams is that huge.
The present senior nt composition must actually be the LOWEST quality already for big battles. We still need 3 or 4 available plug-and-play upgrades, local and filfor, at any time per year.
Forget about cone's silly statements about a permanent 12-man pool for several years, which clearly are meant to please his pba bosses. He is getting old and needs security of tenure money savings for about 7 years more. Him sticking to a fixed 12 ballers for 4 years in ginebra will lead to seriously reduced chances for championship trophies for his team.Last edited by ccharmed; 08-06-2024, 03:58 AM.

becoming a taller RDO is a better template for tamayo. only thing lacking is defense since RDO was a pretty good defender and also more athletic than carl during his prime
meanwhile we have 2 potential 6'10" pingrises in aju edu & QMB

Ibn shouldve known that Pingris and RDO were part of Chots coaching staff uop until the sea games debacle and the asia cup brouhaha happened. Thats the time the transition period between chot and tim happened and the other new guys are removed just like when Alex COmtoon and Topex Robinson were booted out when pandemic halted everything..To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

Guys, who do U think are the best "fours" or power forwards among the locals in Asian basketball at present?
In no particular order, this for me are the best fours in Asian basketball:
1. Yuta Watanabe of Japan
2. Ali Haidar of Lebanon
3. Arsalan Kazemi of Iran
4. Lee Seung Hyun of South Korea
5. Thomas Vodanovich of New Zealand
Zaid Abbas of Jordan should be on the list but I think the many time Jordan national team veteran has already retired from the national team.Last edited by JAMSKIE; 08-07-2024, 10:22 PM."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. But seeing Giddey play in this Olympics, i hope we could develop similarly built player with decent athleticism like Josh.
Giddey is a paradox tho. He is a good ball handler with a high basketball IQ, but very turn-over prone ( fancy passes that lead to nowhere). Also, his jumpshot is ugly. Carl's shooting is far more superior IMO

I'm thinking, maybe if he had suited up for Gilas in the last 3 years, Justin Baltazar might somehow be among the elite fours in Asian basketball at present."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Size, skill, competitiveness. If Tamayo wasn't as late when he started training, his upside could have been a fluid 3 (Fernandez played as a guard growing up).
But like CTC mentioned, a big part of the improvement that Tamayo will have to achieve is on the defensive end. If he becomes versatile defensively, he gives Gilas a lot of lineup possibilities. He has that dawg in him so it's not impossible.
