Oftana and Malonzo are our only eligible wings. Maybe Quiambao, but he has work to do. We need another, especially with JB's retirement.

AJ's our only defensive-minded big at this point, and he's injury-prone. Kai's improving, but he's just getting there. We can't keep recalling Japeth, who's currently 37, from retirement forever. So we might need a new, younger center as AJ's injury replacement.

And the format of the PBA schedule is one where all the key Gilas guys there play heavy minutes across 50-60 games, as all are playoff contenders. Newsome, June Mar, and CJ have 6 more games due to the EASL, unless they get dropped due to rest. Heightened risk of injury, and most of the PBA guys are currently 30 and above. We might need to find reserves for them as well.
Quiambao has all the tools it's just familiarity with the level of competition.

He can dominate Asian level, UAAP and ligang labas circuit but he still needs to work on his confidence and reps at the World level. Same with Oftana. There's still intimidation factor and mental block.

My concern with Oftana, Malonzo, and Quiambao is, can they defend their man? Oftana can follow a system, but has issues sticking with his man. I think you need to be a competent defender at the 3.

That will become more of a need if Bennie Boatwright's the next NP. Need more perimeter defenders at the 3, since 1 and 2 are covered.

Bro, do U think Quiambao can play as a natural small forward both offensively & defensively? He may be a dead shot from 3-pt range but I think his handles is still that of a natural big man. His handles isn't in the level of natural small forwards like Calvin Oftana or a Ken Tuffin or a Javi Gomez-De Liano.

Of course Quiambao is still very much on the development stage. He's only 22 or 23 yrs old so he still have good room for improvement. We've seen a significant improvement in his 3-pt shooting in the last 2 years. Hope improvements in his handles & defense will follow.

        • Guys, minus the rumored "bentang laro" in the championship game vs. Chinese Taipei blue team in the recent Jones Cup , how do you compare Chris McCullough's game with that of Benie Bostwright?

From what I saw in both these 2 players games, Boatwright is the better outside shooter & perimeter operator. McCullough on the other hand has better inside game & is stronger & a bit more athletic. I think McCullough also has better defense than Boatwright.

          • I think coach Tim now wants to slowly immerse Bennie Boatwright into his system & scheme of things, which of course is good.

As far as SF's in general, I think the bare minimum in terms of handle should be enough to successfully attack closeouts. Any more than that is point forward or shot creator territory.

I don't think I've seen Quiambao attack closeouts, though. And recently, I haven't watched him defend the perimeter as much yet. I'll see in the UAAP.

If coach Tim can do this with Bennie Boatwright, maybe he can call up some local injury replacements to immerse them. Heading or RJ for Scottie, Newsome, and CJ, then Navarro or Lopez for Oftana and Malonzo, and guys like Kemark Carino for Kai and AJ.

Reserves should be part of the buildup because we have injury risks in AJ and Malonzo, so we need another wing to fill in for Malonzo (especially after JB retires), and a big to fill in for AJ, which is one of Japeth or Mason.

Additionally, June Mar and Newsome will both be 35 after the Asia Cup (June Mar turns 35 in November), so they might retire soon, or their effectiveness might wane. We will need players who are ready to replace them after they retire.

Cone said Boatwright represents Gilas' future as he will eventually take over the spot from Brownlee in a few years time.

“The fact of the matter is he is going to get older,” said Cone of the 36-year-old Brownlee. “In four years, he will be 39 or 40 and we may have to look somewhere else. And he (Brownlee) understands the reality of it as well.

“It’s on us to make sure that we have continuity and a continuous program… Bennie represents that for the naturalized position. We are excited about him,” Cone said.

So have we seen the last of Jordan Clarkson in a Gilas uniform? It sounds like it.

Most likely the 2023 FIBA World Cup wud be the last time we had seen Jordan Clarkson in Gilas uniform. The price of bringing Clarkson to play for Gilas is just too much. Also, Clarkson could train for Gilas for only a few days as an NBA rule prior to a certain tournament. I don't think coach Tim is pleased with that.

lol man they allowed adams malonzo and newsome.

I guess the asking price for JC exemption was too steep. My guess is a one time payment of $3 Million Dollars to FIBA Secretary General. All that only for JC to show up 10 days before competition. not worth it

                        • Look how Giannis gifted his teammates with new kicks. Jordan can't even do the same.

i've read different articles before about Jordan and to sum up, he isnt really a people's person in general. that said, as a bball fan, i dont really care about what the players are outside the court. as long as they safe and they dont harm fans, you can be whoever you want to be.

A lot of top players (just like a lot of elites in various fields) are not "nice" people when it comes to their business/professional lives. A lot of personal traits that make them the best of the best, can also make them non-friendly. I agree with you, performance in the business side is what matters as long as they don't do anything illegal.

Jordan did punched steve kerr during practice, bullied Bill Cartwright and harassed a lot of his teammates (i.e. Scott Burell’s narrative in the Last Dance)
