We have to be critical on Cone now if he insist on using the same guys as core like Helath of Kai and Edu, growth of Tamayo and Quiambao to plug in with Ramos... no matter how much covering Tim will do RJ will eventually replace iskati.. lucky I see Tamayo as ready enough that he doesnt need to pull isaac go the unstoppable guy in the paint in our team..
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
      1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

      • Tim cone will live and die with the 12 he chose. There is nothing wrong with that, as the players he chose can really play the international game.

What i really dont like is him making excuses about the effects of having sotto, thompson and edu unable to play. So, only 9 fit of the best players left. There is no way he will get a good result if the remnants of the team did qualify to the olympics, which is just a few weeks away.

Cone crippled his own team's chances by not having a strong pool of candidates. I am not blaming him directly for this, as pba politics and budgetary constraints are probably the real reasons for such. But there are no valid excuses for not having strong ready replacements for sotto, thompson and edu.

i have nothing against exemption but, as it implies, this will not be normally given to countries. so there is a possibility none of them gets exempted, or 1 or 2 would. Erika Dy should handle this, but the coaching staff and the fans shouldnt even think about these players as part of Gilas unless cleared.
i think another question to be asked is:, out of the list, if we can only exempt 1, who should be it?
For me, only Mike Philipps has a strong chance to get the exemption.

          - He arrived here around 2019 at age 17.
          - He is studying in DLSU and eventually finish his degree.
          - He has been playing for the Archers for three seasons and will possibly exhaust his remaining two for a total of five years.
          - There is a high chance that he will join the PBA as soon as he finishes his studies.
          - Needless to say, he is a fluent Tagalog speaker which can be a factor to FIBA.

We may have him as a local in our national team by age 25 or 27. From the SBP standpoint, he should be the logical choice since we need height and athleticism at the 4 and 5 positions. Forget his limited offensive skillset as we need him for the defensive end and for grabbing rebounds.

One player that I would like SBP to use the exemption is Collins Akowe - a 6'10, 18 year old bigman from NUNS. He is started his high school at NUNS age 16 and has been with the Bullpups since 2022. He may eventually play for the Bulldogs 3-4 years from now.

IMO, the localization of Akowe will be a landmark one and a game-changer for the Philippine high school basketball scene.

And he already played for Gilas during the last SEA games which is a big plus for him getting that exemption.

                • Coach Tim Cone being firm with his stand of not adding players to the Gilas pool saying that adding players to the pool will mean the new additional Gilas players having difficulty of assimilating with his system & would take some time before those new players get accustomed to the system (Gilas doesn't have the luxury of time of training in every qualifying window & tournament proper). But this is a 3 to 4 year cycle, isn't it? Yes, Gilas will not have the luxury of time of a long training/preparation period, but the players are expected to learn, adjust, assimilate, & get used to the system of coach Tim thru accumulation of time of training, practices & playing together as a team over that 3 or 4-year cycle.

For instance if Jordan Heading & Justin Baltazar are added to the team/pool, during the 2nd window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, they may struggle to get accustomed to coach Tim's triangle offense & defensive schemes but as they further train, practice, scrimmage & play with Gilas, the more they would become familiar & assimilated with the system.

This is the better idea kisa naman U have a small pool of say 12 players, pag na injured yung 2 players mo U would look for replacements. Problem is, those replacements have no experience playing the triangle & have no idea of coach Tim's defensive schemes. Plus those replacements have to jell with their Gilas teammates.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

There are other candidates that know the system. Issue is, they're either old (Marcio, born 1987; Abueva, born 1988), ineligible (Ross, Perkins, Tautuaa), or have weaknesses that might outweigh their strengths (Arvin, volume scorer, poor defender especially at SF; Terrence, volume scorer, good shooter poor defender, injury-prone, born 1992).

Coach Tim will have to integrate others, sooner or later. Remember, June Mar and Newsome are old, and we have to prepare their replacements. Also, injuries will be an issue. We have to prepare for that contingency.

retain the old dogs until 2025 but slowly teach the young ones the system as early as possible. Because of the windows we have the opportunity to experiment again and look at how certain players will fit with the core.

Worst case scenario with limited pool is we are old and crippled in 2027 then we don't qualify to LA, or we qualify for the OQTs but SBP needs to hit the reset button anew then press release is "Road to 2032 Brisbane." We've been like this since 2007. It's a vicious cycle.

                          • from Coach Tim's interview it seems that the older players will be with the national team until the fiba asia 2025 and maybe with some of the world cup qualifying games, as he mentioned that young core players of the current team will be the veteran come 2027, so for sure JB, Junemar and Chris Newsome will be replaced while Oftana, Scottie, CJ and Jamie will be the older vets in the lineup while KQ. Carl, Kai, Dwight, AJ, Mason Amos and the naturalized player will be the main core, now it's just who among Oftana, Scottie, Cj and Jamie will be replaced come 2027

                            • Just curious if you could exempt one guy between Lucero, Christian David and Kai Ballungay who would you pick?

Despite the history of injuries and 2-3 years older
than the other 2, I'd pick David. They're all similar in size (legit 6'6). I was actually surprised to see David upclose and be much taller & wider than Oftana and Navarro. And his game is much more fluid and matured and would have no issues moving between the 3&4 positions.
He's a good shooter too when his feet are set much like Oftana.
