Unfortunately, if AJ's gonna be injury-prone and if we're not going to get an interior defender as the NP, we need as many good perimeter defenders as possible so that we won't be leaking points. Unfortunately, Dwight and Newsome are our only good local perimeter defenders at this point.

Yes, we can scheme, but we still need personnel to execute it.

Scottie is vital for his philosophy. Unless Scottie gets a bad injury, he's not leaving if CTC is the coach.
I'm not in favor of dropping Scottie either. We need good perimeter defenders (we only have 3 among the locals; Scottie, Newsome, and Dwight), especially if AJ's out. As one of Cone's Ginebra players, he can help out with teaching Cone's system.

As for chemistry and cohesion and making the sum greater than its parts, hopefully that can lead to success, especially against big FIBA teams (in Asia at least), and in FIBA tournaments. That makes a team a team, cohesion. If it can lead to a change in approach, so be it.

I've blabbered a lot about defense, because that's how we won our silvers in FIBA Asia 2013 and 2015. Lack of it led to us getting 7th in FIBA Asia 2017 (including a 118-86 loss to SoKor in the quarterfinal, where they shot 66% from the field and 72% from 3), 9th in FIBA Asia 2021, and sliver against Indonesia in 2022. If Cone can turn Carl, Quiambao, Oftana, CJ, Mason, Boatwright, and especially Kai into good team defenders, that's gonna go a long way.

      • for now we have to contend on who's in the 12 up to 2027.

for as long as Coach Norman Black keeps on plowing those piles of haystack all over PHI soils to somehow uncover(ed) hidden gems that's fine with me.

for as long as SBP works hand in hand with SM sponsored NBTC and Manila Live tourney that's fine for me as well.

still hoping that our NF may eventually look for a possible collaboration with the Jr. MPBL to somehow widens the Talent Identification and Grassroot Development as one of my wishlist.

those prospective ballers in our bucket list hasn't accumulated enough merits at FIBA and those kids from the different local leagues that we've seen during our day-offs from our respective day jobs alongside those lads discovered thru different socmed platforms are not yet ready, available and still raw in certain level

the Grandpas should lend a friendly ear to hear to know what's the real score at the ground not only from their respective air-conditioned conference/meeting rooms.

Me too but move him to the bench and get a real starting PG. We have a lot of options and they should have been grooming one since Castro started slipping but here we are.

In his head he is a superstar; as a scorer he needs the ball all the time to be effective. Sadly that's now how Gilas works nowadays. Unless you're Justin brownlee or Jordan clarkson who are proven at this level and can takeover the game, you gotta swing the ball. Sometimes it's not politics but fit. Addition by subtraction.
That is also one of the reasons many players were declined by CTC... He only picks players who are good on and off the court...

Yes, Balti has potential but the timing is off. He chose to play in a subpar league for money and will get the chance again once he plays in the big leagues.
Good question. I think Balti could still have contributed to Gilas (most likely not that much of an impact) had he been invited for the Gilas pool in last year's FIBA World Cup. That was a time that he wasn't that much soaked in a low level competition in the MPBL. The thing about Balti is that compared to his fellow position "four" Gilas teammate Carl Tamayo, he has better 3-pt shooting than the latter & he's more athletic. Tamayo though has the better handles. Though I understand some posters here being concerned that Balti's once reliable 3-pt shooting may have declined playing in an inferior league like the MPBL.

I feel it would be a waste that we might have already seen the last of Balti playing in Gilas jersey. And all becoz of politics. Wag naman sana.

Bolick could be the starter over iskati. No offense for your guy but he's good as off the bench spark guy than a starting PG..

                • Tim is till finding his next Johnny A, Mike Cortez, La Tenorio or Mark Barroca on the Gilas level.. what made it easier for Iskati to be given keys is that he has a great mentor in LA.. He might settle for new new as stop gap or Ramos(which is more of a plugin guard ala Jeffrey Cariaso, Sol Mercado)..

So the mantra is "Wanted Perfect Gilas PG"
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..

This is the most likely scenario. Scottie will be there to establish the culture, kind of like how Haslem took so long to retire.

Personally i wish CTC would consider someone like a Ken Tuffin. He played as a guard overseas and has good size as a 2 & 3

How is Tuffin's defense? Is it within the level of William Navarro's defense?

Offensively, I think Tuffin has a better 3-pt shooting than Navarro.

                        • Pre-injury Navarro is I believe a better defender than Ken Tuffin plus he has better length compared to Ken, but the NBL NZ experience did Ken a lot of good in terms of establishing his realistic position moving forward which is the 2-3 position. He moves more like a guard rather now than the PF back in FEU. I see him as a Dwight Ramos minus the playmaking skills

Navarro plays PF now but he still moves well. I dont know though if his perimeter defense is the same. But he looks more mobile post injury than say Lucero.

                              • Well, at least they tried this time. Classic case of "crap happens." Can be our emergency guard once one of Scottie, Newsome, and CJ go down. Hope Cone adds Heading to the emergency roster next time.
