Or at the very least, put Heading in as a reserve.
played decent defense last night.. thought he assist more last night but manage to register 4 assists as he leads the scoring for the defending NBL-1 central champs

Obviously, Heading will play a different role in team Pinas. Newsome’s best skill at the highest level is his defense. Heading’s is his shooting. Two entirely different roles. Heading’s second best trait is he is basically a decent all around player. Decent handles to be a 1 for a bit. Decent vision. Even decent defense for 1 and 2 and at times even against SF. If there is a hole in his game it his bad FTs. For a high 3 FG shooter he is a bad FT shooter. It worked against him in the Dubai finals. He missed 2 FTs IRC in the end game. Although he made a 3, he was reluctant to drive it in the end game. Maybe because he just missed 2 FTs earlier.

Took us a while i guess to realise the process of making a once ineligible player, eligible. Newsome for his part kinda just settled on his level on the PBA, took a couple of stints in FIBA for him to increase his level of play

Newsome’s exemption took a long time to be granted. Same as Greg. So it’s a fools errand to rely our program on exemptions when it only has come when our players are past 30. Fiba is already gettinh flak from some countries for NPs. They won’t be handing out exemptions easily for in-prime players. The direction is clear. Have your home growns develop or make sure your foreign growns or NPs have a passport early, before they are 16.

When I saw him play in the PBA, he looked like a defensive liability. He was getting blown by and scored on by Tony Bishop, and isn't much of a defensive presence near the basket. That's the biggest concern I have, our defense.
If Boatwright's our NP, we need a good defensive center or 4 to pair with him, considering that he's a defensive liability. That means AJ's the only reasonable big we have that can pair with the guy. Kai's not there yet on defense, neither are Carl and Quiambao.

Either that, or we hope his and our team's offense compensates to the point where his defensive concerns (especially when paired with Kai and Carl) are negligible.

            • It makes sense to start naturalizing now considering how long the mess Cha cha will take.

If they down't want to use Kouami anymore then release him let him be a NP on one of this SEA countries that would appreciate him.

                • Or give him the opportunity to represent his own country. I remember reading that Ivory Coast was interested.

Is Cha Cha even a sure thing?

No doubt that offensively he's impressive (though his performance in last conference final series against Magnolia was far from impressive). I just feel that this current version of Gilas under coach Tim Cone doesn't need a naturalized player who is a big scorer more than it needs someone with decent defensive skills.

While Dray Blatche wasn't known as a decent defender in the NBA, I think by Asia-Oceania standards, Blatche' defense was decent enough.
I'm also worried about the defense. Of our eligible 4/5's, AJ's the only player that can reliably anchor the defense, or at least provide decent help. Kai will have to improve his timing and rotations, and Carl will have to improve on his discipline and foot speed (although he did switch well against Taiwan).

Good news is, we have time before JB calls it quits with Gilas. We have time to find local bigs who can potentially be a good defensive 4/5 (especially on help defense), and Kai, Carl, and even AJ have time to improve their own defense.

So we pretty much have given up on Ange then,he would have been a better player offense and defense and Ange can play either 5 or 4 with Kai.If this is the case let Kouame go then,I'm pretty sure that another Asian country will snatch him right away,or even another Euro country.

                        • Existing PBA rules on player's eligibility must be re-visit due to the changing of times

I still hope those Granpas in the SBP and the PBA may some enlighten on the latest development of each basketball league not only in the NBA but more importantly here in Asia.

they have to be aware that the B.League is dead serious in their very first Rookie Drafting come 2026 and fully(?) remove that Asian Quota thing to accommodate all players with Asian lineage to participate on that historic development as far as Asian basketball are concern.

AK34 deserves to play as a local in the PBA because he was literally a product of Philippine basketball since his teen years compared to the likes of JB, Boatwright, Andray and Marcus who is really a product of Uncle Sam's backyard if they really sensitive on many things.

Sadly, the PBA is really dying.

enough of those bias media reporting that the league is earning, we all know it's the other way around.

SBP/PBA should make peace with the Chooks and CTB for the sake of Philippine basketball moving forward.

that's my Lenten message to those boneheaded Grandpas.

                            Probably the successor.
If Bennie's the successor, we will need a lot of things to happen to compensate for his poor defense:

                            1. AJ to stay healthy. As it is, AJ's the only big we have that can adequately cover for Bennie's shortcomings. Thus, AJ's the only big that Bennie can play with without much threat of opponents waltzing into the paint.

                            2. Kai's improvement on defense. If Bennie gets blown by, Kai will have to cover for him. So Kai will have to improve so that he can decently cover for his frontcourt partner once JB retires.

                            3. Find another 4/5 who can cover for him on defense. We will have space once June Mar retires. Best bets are Kemark Carino and an exempted Mike Phillips.

                            4. Devise the scheme so that dribble penetration is limited every time Bennie's paired with Carl, Kai, and Quiambao. Carl's improved a bit, but he's more of a switch and man-to-man defender, with some steals, not really a help defender. Quiambao reads passing lanes and helps a bit, but not at Kai's level. And we know Kai needs help on defense as of now.

                            5. Bennie's improvement on defense. If he's the successor, he needs to improve on that end of the floor. Contest shots, cover for his men, and rebound.

That would be nice, man gave it all he can, unfortunately he played and learned basketball from the most hated man in SBP.The fact that he barely got any big thank you for his stint in the Asian Games was a writing on the wall.

That, or better yet, we apply for his exemption as a local player, since he developed here. That would lessen our frontline issues on defense.
