  • Losing is not an option in the oqt. Cone needs a team much stronger than the one which drove through the taiwanese. Healthy fajardo and edu are vital, but the team itself still lacks above-asian players. The opposing teams have lots of physical and talented bigs.

Aside from brownlee, cone will need clarkson or green (or both). A heart-ripper like abando is a must, as is kouame due to the fragility of both fajardo and edu. I believe tfat only a valid philippine passport is required for the oqt. If kouame cannot come, the last, one for the road, battles of aguilar would be intriguing.

    • IMPROVING na ba talaga si Kai Sotto? O maliliit lang ang nakalaban ng Gilas? Join na!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCybz1FFt6NbMa-UuLlliOaw/join

      Nice analysis.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

      • This I honestly believe: That in Asia-Oceania level Kai Sotto can really play like an old school center (post up plays/back-to-the-basket moves). That's because there are only few real tall (6-foot-10 & above) & highly physical centers out there in Asia-Oceania basketball. Kai can easily tower over & over power most bigs in Asia. I agree with what Yeshkel said in his latest video.

        • Some attempts at analysis are really too careless, and rather than establishing good points, such only establish the inability to carefully set the baselines, logframe and limits of such analysis.

I actually silenced some of my foreigner profs in economics before. They were too eager to show what their econometric models and pet theories can explain, without carefully mentioning what important things such cannot explain, or how the error terms and uncertainties have to be handled. (Of course, they never knew im good at advanced maths.) Ganyan din sa basketbol at kailangan din ng ingat.

Tim cone correctly identified for use at least 10 above-average two-way players. Basketball championships are always about creating opportunities for all players on the floor to shine, rather than try to shoe shine with hero balling as they repeatedly forced clarkson to desperately do.

Because gilas has no severe height and power disadvantages, only the talent and perseverance of pinoy players matter. With all cone's players excelling in opportunistic balling -- 70% of what it takes to consistently win -- trying to overload defenses and offenses on kai wont work. The present boston celtics are the best situational opportunists ive seen in a while. They seem to be winning more than they lose.

Kai already is very good at hanging around the basket for opportunistic shots, discouraging opponent shots, blocks and rebounds. They cant box him out because our forwards and guards do not lack slashing size, physicality and quickness in the paint. More so if other teams cannot intimidate our genuine skilled partner-bigs like fajardo, edu and aguilar, who are now familiar with high-intensity fiba wars.

in other words, what is the point of trying to contain sotto, when the opponent's players cannot even slow down the other 4 pinoy ballers on the floor??? Did you guys watch the game and see the predicament of the taipei coach? None of his guards cant stop our tough guards, and none of his forwards cant stop or go through our talented forwards. Kai was therefore never under pressure to over-perform. He can dance whatever he wants.

Tower but not overpower. His frame is still far from ideal.

Anyway how many players are around Kai's height? Zhou Qi? I believe he might be the tallest player that's getting significant minutes.

              • With what Gilas showed in the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, coach Tim Cone is excited about the future. Clearly, there’s reason to be optimistic. “The scary part is this team can get a whole lot better,” he said.

Paid daw and confirmed by Tamayo in Mikee's podcast. They were teasing him that it's ranging from 50-80M. Damn. Currently I am seeing him training with Better Basketball. Pack your bags Carl, go to the US and train.

                  • I wonder if its like one of those cases wherein the money isnt guaranteed if he takes a new job just like how coaches salaries work.

I agree on this, until Kai face another team who have big tall forwards who can break the frontline defense and get into his face, can we really see how he can handle real pressure, the upcoming OQT will be a test, the Euros love to break defense and get to the bigs in the middle.

                      • I can't wait for Kai to be matched up with the top centers of Asian basketball like Al Dwairi of Jordan (Kai actually had played against him in 2022), Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Alsuwailem, China's Zhou Qi & Wang Zhelin & the centers of New Zealand.

That would be the real test for Kai.

Arvin can shoot and create his own shot. However, his man defense for the wing is an issue (at SF, man defense is vital in the NBA), although his help defense is good.

Heading and Abando could provide shooting, and both showed competent man defense at 2.

But the real need is at center. Kai, AJ, and June Mar have had issues with health. We need a reserve just in case so we don't have to unretire Japeth. Erram's retired, Almazan and Sangalang are above 30 and underskilled. So, Carino and maybe Greg are the ones we could call up for defensive presence.

This is a very uninformed opinion.

The best time for a player to work on aspects (weaknesses) of their game and improve is during the offseason. The most efficient way to develop a specific skill, whether it be ball-handing, shooting or whatever is by training on it exclusively one at a time. European players would practice left-handed bounce passes for a whole week. That is how you master a skill.

It's also the best time to work on your body/athleticism because your body can recover properly and not be stressed by games.

That's why the best NBA players continually evolve, they would suddenly have an added skill every new season or their bodies improve. They worked on it in the offseason.

Pinoy players in general just play games and never devote enough time to training/practice/working out...and it shows.

suddenly we have a scarcity of Centers that are FIBA competitive,

SBP better lobby for that Ange exemption, or naturalize someone on the same caliber as 2014 Blatche. JB wont cut it against Asia's elite (what more against OQT euro-latin am teams)

And also look at how our young centers like Demisana and Gagate are developing, invite them to Gilas practices so they can be taught.
