Some coaches have different mindset about handling the program, Some wanted to have large pool, Some wanted only small pool since he wants the program to be 100% committed of those players... If we picked 15 or more players, The chances of some players will beg off, Because they will think that we have replacements already, we already saw that in previous coaches from Chot, Toroman, Yeng and Tab, In their era, many players begged off for some reasons... Now, In CTC program, He just selected 12 players for easily committed for those players to be in the pool, There is assurance, No hesitation... They knew they have their spots... Then CTC will pick reserves who are accepting the role just to be there to help the Core 12, just like Japeth... Yeah, I'm surprise that he tap bench warmers such as Gumaru and Cu, instead of Ahamnisi or Tolentino for better options in practice, But CTC knows what he's doing... I think this is fine... We saw Japeth unretire and accepts to be a replacement player, If guys like Scottie or Perez might injured, He can tap Ahamnisi or Tolentino easily as replacements...

at least teams have 15-16 players to choose from and not just 12.. like you said if someone beg off due to various reasons then others will step in..

then asked those who were cut from various NT.. asked them how they feel.. do they regret it? No.. for sure they’ll do it again..

think of the what ifs.. imagine if JB didnt get cleared with aj edu injured and some freak injuries and we left with less than 8-9 players.. then the reserves will come in to replace those players like mentioned above..

and japeth and cu being part of the 4 year plan? it defeats the purpose of his plans

please don’t defend tim cone’s plan about not adding reserves..

no NT will just have only 12 players to their pool in longer stretch..

      • don’t give exemption to our team.. Teams have 15-16 man pool even the best out of them..

        they unretire japeth. that’s funny.

with this past few days you see the importance of 15-16 man pool and not just 12..

        • I didn't really understand the 12 man thing. I thought TCs got some great master plan or something. Honestly would rather get Chiu to throw against these patsies than unretire Japs. I mean people laughed at Taiwan for still playing Jumong past his retirement age and we're doing the same with Japeth. Heck we'd still probably play old man Asi if he can still run.

Example is Thirdy, Always early bird in Gilas practice, Make his time commit kahit pwede nya ipahinga to, may times that he was not 100% healthy but he still come and commit... But was cut in the final line up... Syempre we admit it or not, His feelings was hurt due to snub... This is what CTC to avoid... The 12 ones who picked is that they are already assured of spot, barring no injuries or important commitments... I understand why CTC just tap 12 players..

Then the lines of communication to the picked players are not clear.Nowadays nobody in the world of basketball have a month to three months preparation since most of the best players play outside of their repsected countries, pay the players the same, exception of NBA talent players of course, train the same then explain clearly why he's not in this tournament and assured the player that he's really suited for the next one.So right there you have a permanent rotational team, just sit them down and explain the x and o's of the damn plan.Another thing there shouldn't be a press release that so and so player got cut in the final roster, the HC should correct in the media that the players not playing are still in the roster,it just happens this is the best players the HC had in mind for this tournament.

He was always in the pool, make his time to commit for the national team, he goes early in the practice but in the end he was snubbed in the final line up... Thirdy admit it already na sumama loob nya dun... Same w/ Abueva in 2016 under Tab... iniyakan nya ang pag cut nun... He also put his time to be part of Gilas but he was cut... I think this is what CTC wants to avoid... Kung 12 eh 12 na talaga, He will just take replacements from his team para walang samaan ng loob...
ok, so its like you pursue a girl and you got friendzoned. you drink or cry or whatever coping mechanism you do and you move on. what you are telling us here, is dont pursue anyone to save the heartache? i refuse to believe our professional players are like that. ma-badtrip ka, but fight on. they didnt get to where they are now (good enough to rep the flag) just to crumble because a team (the NT is team anyway) rejected them.
these players know what they are doing, know what they are getting themselves into, know the possibility of not getting a spot or worse getting injured. they mere fact they said yes, we should give them the appropriate respect.

              • Lets accept it, a big reason to this resistance to the 12-man pool is that some of our favorite players are cut and we might not see them again in Gilas. Again, the best solution to this is really forming another team. It leaves Team A intact and still accomodates the players in our wish lists.

                • This is the problem with having a fixed pool. We know AJ is always an injury risk and his presence is not always a given. We know that Junemar also has an injury history and is not getting younger. We also know, that defensively he cannot relied upon in the higher levels. So what TC did now is put Japeth back. A guy who already retired and his own injury history. Is he going to get Japeth everytime we have availability problems? In any case, we are still at the start. Whether SMC likes it or not we will find out if this group is strong enough or if we will need other players. Whether they be other bigs like Balti or Greg or another NP in Kouame or other guards like Heading. I am betting they will but until the games are played we can just speculate which is part of the fun in being in a forum I guess.

"As Fajardo sits, Aguilar, Tamayo fill hole in middle for Gilas"

“We love our size even though we are going to miss June Mar and AJ. That’s 6-11 and 6-10 that we will have… Japeth being able to back-up Kai is going to be really big for us. And Carl (Tamayo) is our third-string center. He might have to play out of position. But these are the things that happen in any basketball team,” said Cone.

                  EDIT:
With this I think the frontline rotation will be: (Starter) Kai(C), JB(PF). (Bench) Japeth(C), Jamie (PF), (3rd String) Karl(C)

                  • At least diba no one now is posting my final 12 even a week or even days before competition even if we already knew that were lucky if we see a ten man rotation in the game..lets face it the 9 to 1th men on this team were already filled up by our young guys (next in line) as if geo chiu will play like aj edu and japeth aguilar by oqt..
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..

If you look CTC’s era when handling national team, he is not type of coach that filling more than 12 players for the pool… In 1998, he just select only 12 players, no more no less, and in 2019, he just select 12, if not for Castro begged off, Kiefer will not get the spot… one thing CTC i notice is that he’s not a fan of Ravena bros… and last year’s Asian games, He just selected 12 players until China didn’t approve Romeo, Abueva, Tautuaa and Perkins inclusion in the line up… CTC just stick with 12 and his rotation is just 8-9 players… I’m afraid that he will bench Quiambao and Tamayo since he’s always rely on his veteran crew

CTC is not a type of coach na “paasa”… he just stick what he picks… he just using 8-9 man rotation either PBA or national team stints… so having more pool of players doesn’t make sense under CTC… we are worried if Quiambao and Tamayo will get any playing time because we knew CTC is not a fan of rookies fielding longer minutes on the court…

We have the same opinion too… I would love atleast 3 reserves only but we are now in CTC era… he’s not a fan of large pool of players.. he is also 8-9 man rotation type of coach… so in his perspective, is he need reserve players? I’m worried if he will give Quiambao and Tamayo big minutes since he always rely on his veteran crew… their position is already filled with great players such as Brownlee, Ramos, Oftana and Malonzo… can these 2 youngsters beat them for playing time?

                          • When he name the 12 guys edu was already injured he really penciled that he will bring 11 guys and when Junmar got injured it was the only time he got japeth to fill in the backup center slot..

                            Iskati , (cj/new)
                            New cj, kquiam
                            Dweet calvin, malonzo
                            Brownlee, carl
                            Kai. Japeth, carl

Imagine how stacked up the lineup is despite the omission of edu and junmar, the only issue that I see is another point guard that has more size and shooting than scottie or someone who is more natural and even if he is smaller as long as he is quickee ) belangel or abarrientos)..

I am even keen on idea on divding the 12 core to 2 teams ( and have an another younger naturalized player or kouame on team b led by young guys ( carl and kq).. and made a team of fillers ( able one) like the one we had in asian games.

We hope CTC or one of his crew reading our post here or even in some social media sites… I’m also really surprised he didn’t pick Heading… in his system, shooters is a must, from Gomez, Arigo, Fonancier, Simon and Chan… triangle will not work if no shooters… even famous Phil Jackson have Steve Kerr, Horry and Fisher in his line up…
