In the 19-year old & below category, guys like 6-5 Caelum Harris, 6-7 Alex Konov, 6-2 Kiefer Alas, 6-6 Patrick Perez (said to have a wingspan that of a 7-foot player), 6-5 Femi Edu are among the most promising.

But I think some of these guys will be ready to play in the senior level in 2 to 3 years time.

Remember that at barely 6-foot-2, Abueva is clearly an undersized small forward in the FIBA game & his shooting is below averaged for a natural wingman. Well, in fairness to Thirdy Ravena, I think in terms of shooting & ball handling, he has a slight edge over Abueva. But in terms of tenacity & energy, Abueva has a significant edge over Thirdy.
And also Abueva have swag… He’s not afraid whoever opponents are… Buo ang loob… Sorry for thirdy, his position are too loaded… When the likes of Scottie retires, guys like Kiefer Alas, Jared Bahay, RJ Abbarientos will take over that position, unless his shooting will be consistently around 40% after 2028 then we already saw his final stints w/ Gilas…

        Don’t sleep on Jacob Bayla.
Never look too far ahead. You might stumble on a block right in front of you.

How is Jacob Bayla progressing? Has he improved his outside shooting? I think he was around 6-4 when he played for Batang Gilas U-16 in 2022 & he played as a wingman. If my memory serves me right, he is an athletic wing guy but hasn't really shown the ability to hit from long range.

Claimed height is 6'6 probably with shoes, but in reality since he's a normal Pinoy he has grown an inch so around 6'5,he looks like he improved alot since then.I'm just basing it on some his latest highlights.https://youtu.be/VpjejOXXJIM?si=Y6W62R8MBoUYumXf

He’s adept in playing combo guard. This is the same development Dwight Ramos had. Dwight outgrew his guard position (inability to stay in front of quicker guards) in college, but as we all can see, the guard skills are there.

Our homegrowns took the pathway to wing position in reverse. From playing the big position in HS snd college to being forced to a smaller position once they enter the PBA. Borboran, Pogoy, Mocon, Oftana seem to have broken the barrier, but the likes of Mac Belo struggled mightily.

Bayla does not possess the ceiling of more heralded names like Harris and Konov, but I think he’s a safe bet as a do it all, glue guy thanks to his skill set and defensive ability.

Good to know that he can play as combo guard.

If SMB wins tonight, then Perez & Junmar would be available by Feb. 15, but if Magnolia extends the series to game 7, then Perez & Junmar wont be available until Feb. 17.

But why wait for the SMB-Magnolia championship series to end when Gilas can already hold practices now minus Perez & Junmar?

Reminds of the ridiculous statement issued by Al "Panlinlang" Panlilio last year in which he said that compared to the PBA national team prospects, B-league national team prospects are not as available for national team duties which of course is a stark opposite of the reality. This 1st window of the FIBA Asia Cup is a good example of the real situation. B-league takes 3 week break to give way to the 1st window while our beloved PBA is still ongoing at this point. Buti nalang at only 2 Gilas PBA players are playing in finals. What if its a SMB-Ginebra finals? Eh di as many as 4 Gilas players won't be available until possibly Feb. 17.

                  Panlinlang talaga itong si Panlilio.

I cannot wait for Panlilio and Vargas to step down. Conflict of interest, and our NTs suffered setbacks in FIBA. We've won despite them, not because of them.

June mar is recovering from a calf injury he played through in the Finals. I am not sure he can immediately start practicing for Gilas.

                        • “Not that we had a problem with it, but before, you can tell that the other teams have better chemistry. They really know each other well, they’ve been playing together on their national teams since they were 13 and 14,” he said.

“And with us, it’s kind of like a new team every time and we got to relearn and study each other and the system," he said. Chemistry is hard to develop in this kind of system, he added.

He said he is looking forwward to playing under Cone’s program, whose style he is familiar with.

“We know coach Tim, his system, and how he runs things, it makes it easy to kind of pick up where you left off, going from window to window, that’s what I’m also looking forward to,” he explained.

One of the things he quickly noticed about Cone's style is that the coach prefers continuity rather than long buildups, and wants few practice sessions than usual.

Newsome said he’s thrilled to see where this brings Gilas in the years to come.

“I already understand coach Tim and his program, it’s an honor to be there, and now, I’m one of the veterans. It’s crazy that I’m one of the ‘kuyas’ now, the next generation’s coming up and they’re in good hands,” he continued.

“I’m excited to see them grow and I’m excited to see us grow as national team.”

                          • This is the problem or challenge that coach Tim's Gilas team will face in the next 4 years: Does the team get to train/play international basketball during the June, July, August, September period since PBA probably would still be running in this period? Our B-league, KBL & college Gilas prospects would be available in this period becoz that would be the off season of these leagues. The same could not be said about our beloved PBA. Which means that if PBA is ongoing on this period, Gilas members Junmar, Malonzo, Perez, Oftana, Thompson, Newsome cannot join Kai, AJ Edu, Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo, Quiambao, etc. for Gilas training & possible stints in international competitions like Jones Cup. Even coach Tim won't be available in this period becoz he will be mentoring his Ginebra team in the PBA.

I think it is crucial that Gilas gets to train & play international basketball in the June to September period in the next 4 years. If they can train kahit 1 month man lang within the June to September period in a 4-year cycle then that would be a huge huge help in developing & enhancing cohesion & chemistry to the team. This is what most (if not all) national teams are doing, especially China, Japan, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan. During the off season of their respective pro leagues, their national team gets to train & play international basketball. That is why cohesion & chemistry have never become a problem in those teams.

                            • for me personally I am not expecting too much on the first and the second year of that 4 year cycle because the players are not literally teammates even in the club level, their would be many bumps here and there especially when we started playing the NZL, AUS, LEB and even the A team of JAP bannered by Hachi and Wata here in the Asia-Oceania level.

for me I am more concern on our boys and girls division because they will be the one who will harvest whatever seedlings coach Tim had planted now up to 2027.

We have the OQT this July, the FIBA Asia Cup in August next year, and hopefully the World Cup in 2027. We'll just need a training camp in June-September 2026 for Gilas, which can hopefully serve as an ID camp for U22 prospects (b2004).
