I like it that coach Tim's Gilas pool is consist of only 12 players as of the present, although coach Tim himself made it clear that there will be some tweaks along the way (remember that this pool would be for a 4-year cycle) & most likely there would be a No. of players that would be added in the pool. Of course there would be a No. of "old" or aging players in the current 12-man pool that are expected to be replaced within the 4-year cycle.
But what I like about this 12-man roster is that they are going to be regular fixtures of the national team in the next 4 years and therefore it would be easier to establish cohesion & chemistry. Also, I'm a believer of a smaller national pool so as cohesion & chemistry will be achieved easier & faster.
I remember coach Chot Reyes' Pilipinas-San Miguel pool during the 2005 to 2007 period in which more than 30 players got to suit up for team Pilipinas in various international & FIBA competitions during that 3-year period. I think that pool/team had a hard time achieving cohesion & chemistry as there were hardly any regular fixtures of team Pilipinas. Certain group of players would suit up in one tournament, then a different set of players would suit on the next tournament.
I'm confident that coach Tim's current team consisting of a small pool or roster will be able to establish cohesion & chemistry faster & easier than having a bigger pool of players.
