We beat Koreans, but they are already in their rebuilding mode... Look at their FIBA rankings, they even lose to Iran's developmental team and Japan's team B team.. Korea is not a threat anymore... This current CTC team will beat Korea right now... Serbia? Yes, but what happened in the crunch time? They badly needed scorer in final 2 minutes of the game and they fumbled... As we love Ange, FIBA eligibility rules didn't allowed it... And if we picked Ange, who will be our no.1 scorer there?
SoKor is not a threat anymore... About that, they do have promising young players like Lee Hyun-Jung and Yeo Jun-Seok, who are not in their current pool. A lot of U25 players too in their pool for this window, and although Ratliffe is aging, none of those locals are over 33, so still in their primes. Plus, their system still makes them scary, so we have to learn to defend it.

We were favorites against them in 2017, but we got blown out by 32 (Bleacher Report called it an upset) because of our lack of defense. Allowing too many threes. Tab's 2021 team defended it better, even Chot's 2013 team. We could defend against China last October, but we had both Brownlee and Ange. We still need a good system and good defenders against them.

Bolick can score and pass. Not very efficient to start this season, but he shot 43% last season. Maybe the 35.3% FG will equalize, especially since it was after only four games.

He's a defensive liability, but we have Newsome, Scottie, Oftana, and Dwight for that.

Local exemption is already slim to none for him, since he didn't continue his residency requirements need by FIBA... We hope that Kai will improve his defense under CTC term, since AJ is not always healthy most of the games and Junmar is already on his twilight of his legendary career.. Because whether we like it or not, we are banking on him right now at the center position...

Kai, when healthy, can do the way Ange did, especially the 4th window game vs Lebanon, he is anchor on defensive end, against the reigning FIBA Asia silver medalist... Even Arakji have a hard time driving vs Kai... As we love to have Ange, we have to move on and trust our local bigs... If Ange was local player, No question about it, Ange is a lock for Gilas forever... PBA is to blamed not to help Ange possible local exemption case for allow him to play in the PBA as a local.. If we pick Ange as no.1 option for NP, who will be our go to guy for scoring at the end game? None of those current picked by CTC can take over scoring when needed the most...

We have to see that Kai can anchor a defense before we can afford an NP that is not a defensive anchor. He needs to prove it first.

Yes, he can block a few shots, but blocks don't paint the whole picture on defense. How many points does he prevent or give up by being there, is he in position to contest, is he making an effort, is he commanding his teammates on defense? That's how you measure how good one can be as a defensive anchor.

To be fair, Cone did put in Ange in the China and Jordan games due to us hemorrhaging points with June Mar in there. Used Ange as a defensive anchor. Pero offensively, he was just down low, when he was used as a high-post passer in Ateneo as well as a PnR finisher.

          • Speaking of Ange, I feel bad that it seems he can virtually no longer play for any National Team, between Brownlee being the defacto NP, and the SBP sending feelers to candidates for a naturalized player that will eventually replace Brownlee.

Unless of course, there is a way to change his federation back to Ivory Coast.

Ayun nga, e. Ange was first in line, even before JB. Even when other candidates (which should be in the U23, born 2001 range) are naturalized, he should be the priority. Yes, his offense needs work, but his impact on defense has been immense.

Korea is still good, but teams like Jordan (w/ RHJ), Lebanon w/ prime Arakji and Japan are better than them.. they were also beaten by rebuilding teams like Iran and China last Asian games… so Korea is like below in top 8 (after Australia, NZL, Lebanon, Japan, PHL, Jordan, China and Iran) but better than Taipei, KSA and Bahrain… but I know Korea will be back, especially if their young prospects reaching their primes and can recruit new naturalized player…

In Asian competitions, Kai can defend.. and he’s not slow in Asian standards… he’s way faster than CBA MVP Wang Zhelin… it’s unfortunate that we can’t tap Ange, but that’s life… we have to deal with it… we have to trust Kai to develop especially his defensive skills… we hope that CTC will have his magic to teach Kai especially in defense…

This we'll still have to see. I certainly hope so as we're stuck with him and they seem to be prioritizing good offensive players as our NP.

Well at least he tries. It's easier to live with bad defensive PGs than have a bad defensive center.

That's why I said we have the guys to cover for him on defense and mentioned the names I did.

Agreed with the PG and center. Very few elite defensive PGs (Caruso, Jrue Holiday) can match the impact of a good defensive center.

His offense with his new team is way better than ever,he wasn't used correctly,by this time at any given game he will be a handful for any Asian center and I can honestly say that in a year if the Australian NBL wants him,he will be a big factor for any team.

Oh I don't know about that, lest we forget that bts during the WC,he pulled Kai out of range of Chot and other players and gave him a very calm talking to about his defense, which CTC was in charge of.

                            • Philippine basketball suddenly become solid at the 3-spot with Dwight Ramos, Calvin Oftana & Kevin Quiambao, which wasn't the case some years ago. In fact the 3 spot used to be our weakness.

Apart from Dwight Ramos & company we still have good size small forwards who aren't in coach Tim's 12-man roster like Will Navarro, Ken Tuffin & Javi Gomez-De Liano. Then there's Jonel Policarpio, Mark Belmonte, Chicco Briones, Caelum Harris down the pipeline.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Navarro should be included too. He's got good size, handles and play making ability. Probably one of our best perimeter defenders too.
