That Tuffin has a better 3-pt shooting than Norwood, parang expected na rin yun knowing how suspect the 3 pt. shooting of a prime Norwood was. I just hope that his defense will improve as time goes by. You're right, Tuffin doesn't have the athleticism of Norwood, so that's an aspect where Norwood has a significant edge over Tuffin.

for me he's like a taller, better ryan reyes, hontiveros was a more dynamic scorer when he was younger.

the closest norwood comparison is still william navarro

Really hope Navarro fully recovers from his injury and continues to improve. For me, he's like a Watanabe.

Very versatile and has high bbiq. Can defend, shoot, athletic and long. Perfect complimentary and system player for Gilas.

It sometimes infuriates me how fans overlook and underestimate Navarro just because he's not a flashy shot creator. You need a good wing defender like him. Calvin Oftana can defend, but he's better known for his scoring.

It boils down to the coach knowing how to utilize a defensive role player like Navarro. Navarro isn't a Dwight Ramos or a Calvin Oftana in terms of scoring in the Gilas team, but the good thing about Navarro is that he doesn't really look to score (well, that's what we saw in him with the Tab Baldwin-mentored Gilas). So I think Navarro is perfect in a national team set up where there are lots of scorers, hence the need for some role players who would be willing to take a backseat in offense.

But from what we saw with Navarro at Northport, he has really become more assertive in offense & his scoring has really improved. I think it has a lot to do with confidence. Too bad he got an ACL injury.

that’s the sad reality for local basketball, the average fans dont appreciate fundamentals and defense, this is reflected at the grassroots level (kids rather over dribble and do fancy layups than focus on the fundamentals)

Weird nga, e. For a country that loves physicality and hustle, defense is often left out of the picture. Even in dream lineup construction, we generally prefer offensive firepower and sacrifice defense. Sacrifice balance for firepower, e.

Not a good outside shooter but has decent handles. Can score on drives and midrange. He can defend wings at the Asia level. I hate to admit it but he probably would have been useful in the Fiba worlds.
Should have taken Pogoy's spot, honestly. He's a worse shooter, but a much better defender and handler.

And perhaps Newsome is a better passer than Pogoy. I think this is one aspect of Newsome's game (passing) that is easily being overlooked. That is why he can sometimes play as a point guard.

Then there are those fans who easily would get awed by players athleticism & ability to dunk. Pag palaging nagda dunk eh magaling na. That is what is being highlighted most of the time in social media eh by most Pinoy basketball vloggers. That's streetball mentality.

                      • The kid just celebrated his 18th birthday. He is in his second at the NU Nazareth - he arrived in the Philippines last year at age 16. He is 6'10.

We can include him for the next year's U-19, can't we?

Edit: I forgot since he is not a Filipino citizen, he does not hold a PH passport.

So, it is the bigs who are the problem this last decade?

I remember you said the positive feedback or positive scouting report about Gilas is Strong Guard play and NP.

I wonder if that will be the same case now since our best players now are kinda our NP and our Bigs.

                            He can be our Abassi.

Maybe. He has 2-3 years more of eligibility in the Juniors. He will surely be elevated to the Seniors thereafter for another 4-5 years, which make him a PH resident for about 8-10 years. Add another 2 years of pro experience (PH minor leagues), that will make him a 12 year-resident in the PH - he will surely have a strong case for localization if that indeed happens.

Someone should recruit 14-15 year old Africans into their Junior's teams this time. Hehe

PBA and the other leagues will need a way to accept the naturalized players. It's such a waste and shortsighted to see our NPs as temporary props for our national team. We can look to KBL and B league in how they classify their NPs. The problem though is we dont have an import all year round. Maybe making a 2nd import slot for NPs and former FSAs can help. Or make one conference for that.
