You got a 6-foot-8 Mark Pingris right there.
In a talent laden team like the national team which will have a good number of scorers, we would really need a role player like Philipps in the same way we needed a Gabe Norwood, Pingris & Abueva in the past.
The only hitch here is that, if Mike Philipps become FIBA-eligible, he would also become eligible to play as an Asian import in the B-league which is what the PBA doesnt want to happen. The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 5 characters.

Well, I hope I'm wrong."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

At least Lopez could go overseas due to his talent and upside. My issue with players going PBA has been worries about Gilas availability, seeing how the PBA didn't adjust well for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, the 2019 World Cup, and the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup. That, and the fact that some players have to go to the right environment in the PBA to develop properly (Troy Rosario didn't develop well with TNT, for one).Originally posted by Kaireem View Postmore like troy already peaked, if people were expecting him to be an international small forward-wing then they should've dropped those expectations early on as troy was and has always been an agile undersized power forward with rangeOriginally posted by IPC View PostI meant, he was just a rebounder/stretch 4 in the PBA. Poor defender, which is honestly a waste of his motor and agility. And in FIBA, he was a poor shooter who can rebound a bit, and a defensive liability.Originally posted by zairex View PostBefore injury, he had good stint in 2016 OQand our top rebounder. Did great against 2018 WCQ.
TNT didn't develop him well, that's where I'm getting at. That motor could have been useful for defense, but ayun. When his shot's off (which was the general rule), he was a liability.

Recent interview on both RSA and MVP. One is very spontaneous while the other one is scripted(?).
Kayo na mag husga.
RSA up close and personal. His Take on Gilas program moving forward, his stand on the previous issues about player’s unavailability, old issues about the propose(?) pullout of all SMC team in the PBA and many more. Time Stamp 2:40 - onwards

Interview on MVP about Gilas performance at the recently concluded AG, his past experience playing against China, the plans of SBP moving forward and many more. Time Stamp 2:02 – 10:45
Subscribe to One News PH here:https://www.youtube.com/c/OneNewsPHSamahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan sits down with O...
What I’ve notice on that interview is that he notice that if the Filipinos will be given a chance to focus to do something he will deliver the way the organizing committee has done during our hosting and FIBA hasn’t complain but he also confess that he thinks barging in the top 20 will not happen during his lifetime(Time Stamp 6:40 – onwards), oh well!! IMHO I find that statement very contradicting because realistically and I believe that we can really barge into the top 20 in the immediate future and even in the top 15 if the narrative is all about “Filipinos can deliver if given the chance to do something”. In fact as per Sir Dave, the budget of the SBP is very much competitive compared to those on the existing ladder, if only the TF provided to JC and Kai will be use in the grassroot development even barging in the top 10 are not really impossible.
At least he admit that the ill-fated WC bound team was only assembled 2 weeks before the actual tournament and “you don’t do that in a tournament like thw WC”. I really sense that the oligarch is covering DDO Sr. Grandpa Al P. and Grandpa Ricky V. as much as possible for that forgettable performance.

It was probably only TC in recent years who was trying to use a big SF with GSM. It started with Arthur dela Cruz but came into fruition with Malonzo. NP also comes to mind but it's hard to include farm teams because they are not really in the league to win.
About time, because those two are positions of need for Gilas.

I just hope that SBP can form a team made up of B-league & KBL players - Dwight, AJ Edu, Thirdy, Tamayo, RJ Abarrientos, Rhenz Abando (I expect Kai to be attending NBA Summer League by that time), & current collegiate standouts - Quimbao, Mike Philipps, Mason Amos, Balungay, Lopez, Belmonte, Cansino, Nelle, for the 2024 William Jones Cup. Give the team about 3 weeks of training & I think it's ready to go."A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. The host of OQT are confirmed… these are Spain, Greece, Latvia and Puerto Rico… also the format still the same before except the groupings.. POTS 1,4 and 5 will be groupmates while 2,3 and 6 are the other one… that means we will be Group among Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Georgia and Mexico.. New Zealand and Lebanon are already out of contention because both are Asia/Oceania representatives, they will not be grouped in each other…

Another analysis here is that Gilas will only go either Spain and Latvia only… we will not go to Greece or Puerto Rico… In POT 4, only Georgia and Mexico our possible groupmates.. we might have a chance entering 2nd round… Georgia is a tougher match up for us… their World Cup debut is quite impressive, they have good tune up games before World Cup that includes beating Montenegro (84-79) who just beat Gilas in another tune up game before World Cup too (102-87)..

they also beat Jordan w/ RHJ in their tune up matches (86-69)

meanwhile I know all of Pinoy fans will pray that we will be grouped with Mexico.. although that was just a tune up game, but we almost beat them w/o JC.. I don’t know who will be naturalized because JB’s status still uncertain at this point and I don’t think SBP will pay to tap JC because actually our chance here is very little.. so SBP will not waste huge money in this OQT… maybe our naturalized here might be Kouame unless SBP will hire new naturalized player in horizon before OQT July next year

But SBP is not really in charge who's who that's going to play now is it?It's SMC so more than likely SMC will play more of their players than overseas guys no matter what and if those college guys wants to play, then they have to sign something that they will play for PBA/SMC for so many years before going overseas. With Vargas and Marcial hating anything to do with overseas players,we'll probably see more PBA players to prove their point that the PBA is the best league in Asia.
