    Notes:
    • There can be a maximum of two European teams in each group and not more than three European teams in each tournament.
    • There can be a maximum of one Americas team per group.
    • There can be a maximum of one team from Asia and Oceania in each tournament.
    • There can be a maximum of one team from Africa into each tournament.
I hope Gilas will be grouped with more popular teams such as Lithuania or Spain... We still didn't face them since Gilas program started....
    so Georgia and Mexico
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..

I would develop mason if im tim or the next nt coach, putting mr unstoppable in the paint isaac go on our team isnt long term beneficial for us..

      • Hope no more 6-foot-2/6-foot-3 small forwards like we used to have in the 90's & even up to the late 2000's. We now have a good pool of 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 natural small forwards.

Nope... just one of those two... We will likely face 1 powerhouse team in POT 1 or 2.... The weakest team in either POT 1 and 2 is Greece and Slovenia if Giannis and Luka will not play... Italy is a good match up too since we just lost to them by just 7... Poland is also good match up too since China almost beat them before... But overall, we are damn underdogs with them... Meanwhile, Lebanon will have a chance advancing 1st round since they are in POT 4, They will face lower bracket teams in POT 5 or 6 unless they will be group with Croatia or Bahamas... They will be in trouble... They have to pray that they will just face any African teams

If you're just 6'2"-6'3", you better have Abueva's motor, defense, physical gifts, and maybe a good jumper to play 3 in FIBA at that size. Or if you're 6'4", at least Dwight's body type, strength, and speed. Otherwise, that size (6'2"-6'4") is better suited for the off-guard spot.

Good thing we have Dwight, Navarro, Malonzo, Oftana, and Lopez at that spot. Hopefully, Mark Belmonte, Justine Sanchez, Jonnel Policarpio and Aldous Torculas can develop as good wings for us.

Speaking of Abueva, it is still some sort of an enigma for me that despite Abueva being just 6-foot-2 (they say he's even barely 6-foot-2), he was serviceable to Gilas in 2015 despite not having a decent outside shooting. His height is that of an average (or even below average,) shooting guard in Asian basketball, yet he played as a small forward for Gilas & hardly caused any mismatch despite being matched up against 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 small forwards of the opposing teams.

Abueva obviously compensates for his shortcomings in height & skills (shooting,) with his unparalleled tenacity, energy & toughness.

Imagine if Phi basketball will have a 6-foot-5 version of a Calvin Abueva, I think we are going to consistently be in the top 3 teams in FIBA-Asia-Oceania basketball.

Big hands, long wingspan, and long standing reach would be an invaluable asset too. Speaking of our 6'3"-6'5" bball kids in the pipeline, those projected to become the stocky, undersized small/power forward types like Camson, Ferrer, Mariano, the Matt Evans-look-alike guy from SMB, and a lot more, if only half of them could be developed to play (or move) like Lu Dort of Canada at the very least, that would be a great thing for Gilas/PBA in the long run.

Wingspan has a lot do with it. Just compare him with CJ Perez. Same height. Perez is probably more explosive. Better handles and shooting. But despite this Perez has not been effective recently. The main difference I think is Abueva has a much longer wingspan than Perez. This allows Abueva to guard SFs even in Fiba while Perez can’t. Perez is pigeonholed at SG. But his shaky handles, decision making and outside shooting for a guard, makes him less effective at high level comp. Lassiter is also an example. Despite being 6’2/6’3 he has a good wingspan allowing him to guard SFs in Fiba.

You forgot that Abueva is built like a tank and pretty explosive.

Here's the thing,NT coach will probably have the players 1-2 mos, tops and he's going to work with what the player is bringing on the game,so Mason can just be a role player, whose role is be inserted if needed more arc shooters in certain plays,he can play 5-10 mins a game and be a big contributor and that's just fine.

But at the same time he gets frustrated when the really big forwards make contact or bodied him,he gets all riled up and will try to disrupt the whole game so that he can put the other guy in his place.

                            • Guys, do U think La Sallle point guard Evan Nelle is a future (I mean near future) Gilas material? I think Nelle's playmaking skill is good enough at this point, though he has the tendency to take ill-advised shots. Well, such imprudent shot selections can be corrected since he's still young.

                              • SBP should seriously apply for exception on Mike Philipps. The guy has the potential to become a vital component of the national team in the near future. Of course Philpps is no Jordan Clarkson or a Justin Brownlee or a Dray Blatche in terms of skills, but I think Philipps' tenacity, energy & toughness are unmatched. You got a 6-foot-8 Mark Pingris right there.

In a talent laden team like the national team which will have a good number of scorers, we would really need a role player like Philipps in the same way we needed a Gabe Norwood, Pingris & Abueva in the past.

The only hitch here is that, if Mike Philipps become FIBA-eligible, he would also become eligible to play as an Asian import in the B-league which is what the PBA doesnt want to happen.
