Confidence. I've noticed it with several young filams. Aside from adjustment to the physicality, they also need time to adjust to being more assertive. Our homegrowns like Kiefer are used to being stars locally. They have no problem being the main man. While the filams are nowhere near being top dogs in america (exceptions are guys like Mandaquit). It takes time for them to realize how good they are. Even Dwight did not immediately realize how good he would be in asia.

That's why in assessing youth prospects, it's more important to judge them in terms of upside. Height/length, athleticism, fluidity, coachability, feel for the game.

    • Nice to see Javi Gomez-Deliano playing this well so far in this conference. This could be Javi's breakout year in the PBA. He is now getting the minutes & the scoring opportunity.

The only possible downside I see is he would soon be headed to super souped up teams of SMC in which he won't be given enough playing time & opportunity to score or worse, he would eventually rot in the bench.

Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

Haven't been watching the PBA games lately. How is he (Javi) actually doing these past few games? Is he looking like a taller version of Marcio now?

Nothing spectacular really since he isn't athletic (he's no Oftana or Kobe Paras) & he's not that quick either. But skills wise, I think Javi has the makings of becoming a PBA star. Wag lang sya mapunta sa super souped up teams like Ginebra or SMB

Kiefer Alas was indeed the standout there. But going against the better teams you could more or less see his ceiling. Kiefer's bread and butter in his age group is his strength. He could push off or drive again most guys in his age group. But he couldn't do it against the bigger Oz. He shot 1/9 or something. That's why Morales's 2/2 on drives against Oz is encouraging. It hints at a higher ceiling for the kid. He is not fazed against the bigger kids because he probably plays with them in the US. He already has decent agility and athleticism. If his skills continue to improve he is somebody to look forward to in his age group.

Yeah kieffer isn’t really efficient, he shot 17% from 3 in the tournament.

              • The 1st window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers is 3 months away yet we haven't heard from SBP about their plans regarding Gilas. Baka naman busy lang si Al Panlilio & his SBP cohorts. Busy doing nothing as usual.

Look, the 2023 World Cup is over, the 2023 Asian Games is over which means that SBP people are no longer occupied taking care of things so as not to set their sights in the 1st window of the Asia Cup qualifiers in February. Wala silang excuse for not focusing on the February window.

What's the plan na ba? Who will coach the team? Who would be the players? If PBA players won't be available, then we call in the B-league boys & the college players. Who would be our naturalized player?

I just hope SBP people are doing things which they don't publicise that's why wala tayong naririg na updates so far.

I'm almost sure there won't be any overseas Pinoy players since, they're still on a high that they can win without them just the PBA/SMC best and they won't deviate on this plan until they lose all the games.

Availability of PBA players for the February window is a question mark.

Since its SMC is in charge, its not hard to avail all their player even the hated Mikey Williams. They will perform a miracle of the PBA doing all kinds of adjustments, its cheaper than paying the overseas guys their worth.

Again, Chua's really open to the overseas guys. It's Vargas who's the one who's fine with all PBA players and no overseas players, despite the fact that the Asiad rotation had an average age of 31, and the roster had an average age of 31.7.

That's one way to hasten to a rebuild from scratch, because chemistry will be an issue all over again.

Until I see the overseas Pinoy players actually playing,I'm holding my reservations,I just don't see them playing unless they actually will be going back to the PBA,we probably would see more of college and Batang Gilas in the lineup, since they can make them sign a memo of playing in the PBA first, before going overseas.

Good point, because yeah, historically, SMC have been PBA-centric. Still, many useful PBA players are above 30. That's not sustainable, especially considering that we'll rebuild from scratch again and again and again.

About playing in the PBA first, that might depend on the team if the player will go overseas at all. Because, Oftana re-signed with TNT for three years. None of SMC's players have been lured by overseas teams.

If for instance PBA (or SMC) & SBP decide to form a PBA-select Gilas team for the 1st window of the Asian Cup qualifiers in February, how will they justify the non-inclusion of the B-league players & a Rhenz Abando? Remember that the B-league boys & Abando would be available for national team service by that time.

I think its difficult to justify the non-inclusion of the likes of AJ Edu, Kai Sotto, Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo, Rhenz Abando, etc., to think that all these players are available by that time.

The PBA selection is not too bad of a choice if they can backstop Junmar with AJ and AK,if available Kai,he needs the reps,he's been sitting his ass for a long, long time.Maybe also on the big guards of Dwight and let's see what Abando can really bring with plenty of playing time.As from the colleges Amos and Lopez, should be more than ready and capable if in the lineup.
