Cone said Panlilio wants to get his insights on the national team program moving forward after Gilas captured the gold medal in the Asiad. But Cone was quick to point out that it is not related to the coaching job with the national team.

“I did see Mr. Panlilio tonight and he said that he will contact me and we will talk but it’s not about the position,” said Cone on Sunday during the PBA 48th Season opening ceremony. “It’s just about the general vision on how the program is going to move forward. I think he wants to get some of my ideas.”

Cone reiterated that he has no plans of extending his stay with Gilas Pilipinas that he agreed to take over specifically for the Asian Games only.

“I’ve been saying a couple of times publicly that it’s a complex question because there’s not a simple answer to that because there are so many things that go on in terms of how the vision is going to be done.”

“It was a simple answer for me to do the Asian Games because I’m going to do it from here to here. And it’s very finite. And we had a full vision. We know what we wanted to do and how we want to do it,” said Cone.

I hope coach Tim Cone would be candid enough to tell Al Panlilio right to his face that if wants Gilas to succeed in the upcoming FIBA & International tournaments, it would need a foreign coach who will coach the team on a full time basis.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

A decent local coach would be good too. However, as good as coaches like Goldwin Monteverde, Aldin Ayo, and Jeff Napa are, they haven't been mentored enough in the international setting. Maybe Topex Robinson, who served under Tab, and Charles Tiu, who served under Rajko Toroman, would do? Both coaches are leading their teams to a potential Final Four finishes as well.

      • the nt sf is being given away to Kevin quiambao the way he is playing and his fit next to calvin oftana as they both dont need 30 min pt to be effective..
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
        1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

I'm not sure about Kevin. He might have improved his perimeter skills but I'm not sure if his perimeter defense is good enough. I agree though that he should be considered in the pool, being arguably the best college player now.

this will really dictate if kquiam gets a foreign league offer or not, if he is able to play good-enough perimeter defense then he can play as a wing overseas. otherwise he's just another pinoy undersized big despite his talents. i've seen the media portray him as 6'8" when he's actually just barely 6'4".

He stopped growing during his Batang Gilas days,he's like the average Pinoy who stopped growing between 15-16,there were videos and pictures of him with Carl Tamayo who was billed back then at 6'6,Carl grew another 2 inches, while KQ got stucked at 6'5 at best.

              • It is pathetic how KQ markets himself as 6'8." Even with shoes he is not 6'8." But kudos to him for his much improved play. He should improve his dribbling and shooting. He can't play 4 and 5 in FIBA. Asean maybe but not at the Worlds.

                • For now its nice to see Quiambao achieving remarkable improvement in his game. I think there is really a conscious effort by Quiambao to improve his outside shooting & ball handling & it really translates in his games so far in the current UAAP season. Even coach Tab Baldwin took noticed of Quiambao's work ethic.

I hope this would be Quiambao's last season in the UAAP & he will decide to turn pro next year. I think he's ripe for the pros. Quiambao needs to go to another level to really enhance his development.

Ripe indeed. Hell, i think he can be a difference maker now if he's playing for a PBA team. Another thing I noticed is the way he plays above the rim nowadays. Has he always been that athletic? He's been constantly doing in-game 2-handed jams. He's looking like a bigger Vergel Meneses or Benjie Paras during his youth. I didn't see this version of him during last year's UAAP/FIBA Asia Cup.

he was a unorthodox big (kontra tiyempo type in his 2022 fiba asia cup days) nowadays remrkable improvement in his explosiveness and his "wing game' has improved a lot..

Yes sir, the wing skillset is already there, especially in offense and it's so much fun to watch. He just got to get faster just like how our 6'0"-6'2" current homegrown guards are and i think that if he can improve more on his hops, maybe he also can with his overall agility in that 6'5" frame of his.

Its not him per se,its the vloggers and sports analysts, they have a tendency to trying to predict height of U16 boys,KQ falls under the still the normal growth stoppage of a normal Filipino,15-16 years old.You have vloggers and analysts insisting Kai is still growing and won't stop growing until he's 21,even tho the Japanese Bleague last season in their sports checkup that Kai is 7'216,not 7'3,or even 7'4,heck they projected him all the way to 7'5 like he got some uncontrolled giantism,he stopped growing at 17.Even Mason Amos they thought he's gonna be 68-6'9,he just grew an inch at 6'7 and that's that.KQ can be a force to be reckoned with at the Asean level, but Asian and above a backup SF is not bad really.

                          • The Gilas roster that played in Auckland New Zealand last year (2022) is actually not bad

                            PG Kiefer , Abarientos
                            SG Abando, Idelfonso
                            SF Dwight, Lopez
                            PF Tamayo , Quimbao

Etc , these are actually many of our core future players

Yeah, his leaping ability has really improved as well. His athleticism may not be on the same level as that of a Francis Lopez or a Kobe Paras but I think Quiambao's athleticism right now is good enough na.

Also, I think Quiambao's wingspan is also impressive. Even if it will turn out that he's only 6-foot-5 or perhaps only 6-foot-4 & a half, if his wingspan is that of a 6-foot-8 player then that's good already.

                              • Quiambao has excellent work ethic. The time he spent working on his body in the offseason is now paying off. It was a conscious effort to transform from a big into more of a wing player. It's funny how a lot of people here was just calling him an undersized big.

Another advantage he has aside from the wingspan is his big hands. That's why he has that one-handed shot like James Yap. Huge hands (like Jordan, Kawhi, Giannis, Yap) are a big advantage in basketball.
