  • Before 2027 FIBA WC I tend to believe that Qatar will try to use being a host as leverage in asking FIBA to relax its rules on foreign born players specifically securing passport by age 16. With Qataris’ clout and money they can made it happen lobbying to adjust passport by age 18 I reckoned. Their present crop of hoarded players from abroad (Bosnian and Senegalese) are lacking quality. So I won’t be surprised as early as when they won the bid to host 2027 edition they are on recruiting rampage of young talents abroad.

What would be its implication to Philippines? Well for me it will be positive as we can recruit and process papers with Fil-foreign prospects and naturalise FSAs earlier as well…

    • I hope Brownlee's suspension is no more than 3 months. In this way he can play for Gilas in the February 1st window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers.
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

      • With the way Kevin Quiambao is playing in the UAAP, I think he is ripe for Gilas service. Hope he is named to the Gilas pool for the 1st window qualifiers of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. He can really play as a small forward with his improving ball handling & outside shooting. Hope he is quick & mobile enough to defend natural small forwards in Asian basketball.

        • if the smc block will be asked to have a more active role with sbp i think its safe to say that 1) we wont be seeing tab baldwin in gilas again and 2) he might just say goodbye to the uaap too

i also heard the handlers of the amos brothers and some of tab's recruits are testing the "waters" with other schools as early as now

Why do you think they are doing that? Is Tab going?

Ignore that troll. And Tab has 2 more years in his contract with Ateneo. The only rumor going around in Ateneo is Amos has offers from foreign leagues.

If Amos keeps it up he may really be recruited by foreign leagues. I'm not sure though if that's a good move this early. He might not be good enough to get enough playing time there. His skills are top notch. He just needs to train his body to its optimum level.

I agree Amos still needs to work on some areas of his game to make that jump into the pros. I think he still lacks the strength to play the 4 position and is still getting used to the physical play in the UAAP.

That said, if we're thinking OQT, keep the main rotation of Scottie, June Mar, Perez, Newsome, Oftana, and have Alas in the pool. Ross is 38 and ineligible, Marcio's 36, Japeth's retired, and there are better options at 3 and 4 than Arvin. That's where we look to the B.League and KBL guys for reinforcements. We have JC, Ange, and hopefully JB as options by then.

For the windows, I'm in favor of a younger roster backstopped by veterans so that they can build their chemistry early.

For the Asia Cup, let's see who can still compete at a high level.
just saw AFC's interview with Quinito and he is in for creating a full time gilas team and play them as a guest team in the PBA to prepare for international competition and have the same exposure and salary as pba players have

Not enough incentives,if you're at a Gilas level player, the amount of pay is not enough, the starters will have good offers from overseas.

Amos needs to trim down his weight to improve his mobility, agility & jump. I think he's overweight right now. Offense wise, I think he's good enough for his age. It's in the defensive aspect that he needs improvement.

I agree. A fitter Mason Amos would be like our version of a prime Melo (with that kind of perimeter offensive repertoire, at least from what I saw last night). Already having decent handles, being leaner and lighter would enable him to be quicker and more lethal with those step back jumpers.

While a full-time Gilas team would be nice, I don't think that's feasible, I'm with ARMIR.

Next-best bet would be to build long-term chemistry by playing the same core, and supplementing them with good young FIBA performers and high-upside talents. That's as close as a full-time team as you'll get.

Reviving the NCC or the Smart Gilas program at this point would be a wishful thinking now that the lure of pay-for-play or professional basketball has gotten even stronger. Dati PBA lang ang nagdo draw ng mga amateur players to turn pro. Now there's the B-league of Japan & KBL or South Korea. And there's more money in Japanese & Korean basketball than in the PBA.

For instance if we form a developmental national team composed of the likes of Mason Amos, Quiambao, Lopez, CJ Cansino, Mark Belmonte, Chico Briones, Jonel Policarpio, Caelum Harris, Jacob Bayla, Alex Konov, Seven Gagate, etc., it won't take that long before guys like Quiambao, Lopez, Amos would get offers from the B-league or KBL & our very own PBA.

The No. 1 question would be: Would the national team sponsor be able to match the offers?

If Mason Amos is offered 800k per month by a B-league team, kaya bang tapatan yan ng sponsor? I doubt that very much.

OK, I watched some parts of the interview again, and Boss mentioned the guest team part AFTER he mentioned that the 19-24yo age group is already 'palaban.' I think he was referring to a U24 Gilas as a guest team in the PBA, not really a full-time Gilas team.
