Thats my point , so finding that 6'5 pg will be hard to come by.
Yuto Kawashima and Yudai Baba. William Navarro, Oftana and Jommel Puno.

There is a way, it will not be 100% of course but there is a way. One thing is 100%, starting proper training late at the teenage years like how we keep doing it locally with our bigs makes it impossible. Then conveniently blame it on dna. Set the bar low and put a limit on what guys can become. Cycle continues.

And don't even use Kai as a comparison, like I said 7-footers are a different breed. They are not supposed to move fast and fluid, those who do are freaks regardless of race. But for 6'6-6'8 it is totally possible through early and proper training.

Its still about genetics and race. Our 6'7s have the mobility and athleticism of euro and african over 7 footers. No amount of training will make up for that deficiency. With all the training, side by side, our 6'7s and 6-8s will always be inferior and limited compared to theirs. You can have a high IQ, 6'7 version of chris tiu but he will still be slower than bogdanovic or paul pierce

One only has to look at what players comprise the nba to ascertain what races are optimal for the nba. You don't need Tiu's IQ to come to that conclusion.

But the goal is not to outdo the athleticism of other races...the goal is to be athletic enough. Watanabe is nowhere near the most athletic in the nba, but it is enough. That's the goal.

Not that long ago guys like Will Navarro and Oftana did not exist. Homegrowns their size were lumbering like Polistico, Mosqueda, Babilonia, etc. Guys now are bigger, faster, stronger. Guard Cholo Annonuevo's size is not that far from big man legend Jerry Codinera. And a big part of that is "training technology." And without that proper and early training, we will continue to have guys like lumbering bigs of years past.

And if one is always going to use the race/dna card, then why even bother with basketball.

Actually a lot of foreigners I have talk to said why basketball when your average guy is 5'5", body is not big and not atheltic. Only in basketball will be need all those attributes. In volleyball you might need height and athletic but not necessary heft. Football, height is not a big advantage, similar to baseball. We chose a sports that make as so disadvantageous. That why its crazy for other SEA countries to try and follow our lead too.

So there you have it, you're also in the "why are we so into basketball" camp. Very odd for a guy who uses terms like ICE defense and 45 cuts.

I think you did not understand my post. Just read it again on a backdrop that I was talking to a foreigner and he said this to me.

I like to look at Inodonesia to see what a bad development program if a sport is popular in the country looks like when it comes to football. In fact which SEA football teams are competitive on the international level? Ever since the fil-foreigners have joined the region Azklals started winning and have become one of the best in the region.

if you want to look at natural talent, most Asian countries do well at baseball.

Yes I read it, you mentioning our race/dna limitations before and then mentioning that conversation with the foreigner which is basically about race/dna again sort of made me understand it that way.

What was your point in mentioning your conversation with the foreigner then?

That others see the disadvantage including foreigners. They think its crazy that we love something that is so disadvantageous to us and chance of winning is small. So they also feel DNA are limiting factor. Its just so glaring to those foreigners. From science to basketball fans in general same thing, about us and basketball should have not be this loved

This might be the most crucial physical attribute of a player Height/long limbs, Heft, Athleticism. Most pinoy will only check 1 or rarely 2 of those.

Even with that I still love and read more about basketball and support our team. I was ask why we love it, I said that we love underdogs. Basketball is the only popular sport that make us the most underdog.

There, that third paragraph is crucial.

This race/dna/athletic/size thing...we're not really crazy thinking we will be fiba world cup champion or olympic champion. We're not crazy thinking we can beat the size and athleticism of the US and Serbia. But the success that we have accomplished in basketball is enough. Actually it is enough when it comes to any team sport that we compete in. Comparable southeast asian countries who are so much into futbol has nowhere near the success we've had in basketball. In terms of success in sports, our best chances are really in individual sports, especially those with weight classes like boxing and weighlifting. And the less expensive, the better the chances.

Like you said, us liking basketball is a defiance to people who say we're not supposed to be in the sport. It's appeal is very much like Jamaica having a bobsled team.

And now it makes sense, you're more of the normal fan basing everything on what you read and watch. Not to demean but there is so much more going on that regular people are not aware of so don't be too quick to think in absolutes.

It's like thinking you can learn and master swimming by reading a book.

                        • I just realized that Gilas was only one of the two teams in the World Cup that sent a team having 5 players shorter than 190cm (6'3). The other team was Venezuela which fared worse (0-5, 30th place).

Also, contrary to many says, Japan is not really that short as a team. Yes, Togashi (5'6) and Kawamura (5'8) are short but the rest are above 188cm (6'2) while 8 players are 190cm (6'3) or taller.

                          This is their rotation:

                          PG Kawamura 5'8 - Togashi 5'6
                          SG Hiejima 6'3 - Tominaga 6'2 - Hara 6'2
                          SF Baba 6'5 - Yoshii 6'5 - Nishida 6'3
                          PF Watanabe 6'9 - Inoue 6'7
                          C Hawkinson 6'10 - Kawamata 6'8

This explains why their twin midgets as well as their shooters seemed comfortable doing their thing - you have a hardworking center in Hawkinson, you have an athletic utility four like Watanabe and an athletic wing like Baba.

It also helped that two of their opponents did not have any significant advantage over them.

They have an identity. They all know their roles.

Like I always say...your team doesn't have to be the most athletic, but you have to be athletic enough. Doesn't have to be the tallest, but tall enough. Not the fastest, but fast enough. We'll never be the most in those things.

But try to be elite at something and make it your identity. In Japan's case, they went with shooting.

In our case, we were 10th in defensive rating in the World Cup, mainly thanks to AJ Edu. I'm still of the opinion that we need to build on that and have that as our base. Still, having an identity on offense could work too.

We live and die with Clarkson last month. That's the problem - Chot really wanted Clarkson to be our offensive gameplan but he did not surround him with players that can compliment him.
