  • Truly outstanding
It had been a crazy eight months for Gilas Pilipinas that saw them living in different bubbles across four countries. And on their last night in Amman, Jordan, the team had dinner at Copacabana Brazilian Steak House in Amman, Jordan where stories were shared over meat and wine. “A great tour, a great campaign in […]

    • As important as playmaking is, shot creating should also be emphasized imo. Overpassing that leads to wasted posessions or turnovers have been a huge headache to watch in Gilas teams that doesn't have a Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro or Jordan Clarkson or when they're on the bench. Every posession that ends up looking like a game of hot potato that leads to nowhere or worse leads to turnovers really highlights how amateur this team is but it's been a problem with pba-select teams too against international opponents espescially with the absence of Romeo and Castro. This is far more important now that every player has probably been scouted already as well as the teams go-to plays, our opponents will have a far easier time telegraphing our plays moving forward as well as our players tendencies.

      • I wouldve been more intrigued with Jolo Mendoza in Gilas jersey than Belangel but maybe Jolo as pg isnt really there yet..
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
        1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

        • Unfortunately, the only real advantage of Jolo over SJ is his outside shooting. He is one of those guys that I wish was at least Allan Caidic-sized; guy is instant offense off the bench

Whay is Jolo Mendoza's height? Is he in anyway smarter & more disciplined than Belangel?

Almost same probably as Belangel (5-9 to 5-10). Problem is he played lacks the playmaking skills to play a true combo guard. Played most of the time prior to college as a shooter/scorer, so pg skills are way behind to that of Belangel. Missing uaap season in 2019 didn't help developing his game further. More disciplined, in a way since he doesn't really find opportunities to make plays for his teammates.

              • And Jolo is even older than Belangel, right? If Jolo is no point guard then he's no good for Gilas. If naliliitan tayo kay Belangel, who is 5-foot-10, for the PG spot, then what more for a 5-10/5-11playing as a shooting guard.

1 year older.. guy though is a natural shooter-scorer

Still, at 5-foot-10/5-foot-11, would be an undersized shooting guard. Jolo might be another Renren Ritualo if he plays for Gilas. Magaling ngang 3-point shooter but was so undersized a shooting guard for the FIBA level.

Well, we're sort of getting a 6'7 Allan Caidic in the form of Justine Baltazar

agreed on this take Gilas badly need this type of players at least have one in their roster capable of doing (ISO plays) after watching most of the Olympics game of teams like Australia (patty) and (Luka) Slovenia are one of the best shot creators when there team need points.. and IMO Ramos, Ravena are not there yet.

I expect our offense to change with Vucinic helping us out. I also want to see our team at least do an iso play twice per 10 plays. Romeo would have been perfect for this role. Currently out of all of the young guns 1GDL is more than capable to have this role as well but we already know what happened between him and the team but I hope to see him back in Gilas after they can get along again.

It would have been great if he had grown up in the current basketball climate when they're emphasized to be complete basketball players, and he probably would have been trained as a point guard. It's a shame that because of those natural shooting and scoring skills, he was played as an off-guard all his life. He was showing strides in becoming a good scoring PG as Matt's primary back-up when they beat DLSU in the 2017 finals, but since Belangel was recruited and Tio came into his own, Jolo was back to being used as an off-guard until he had to sit out Season 82 due to academics. Sayang.

Anyway, as Kiefer has shown, it isn't too late to transition. But Kief has always had crazy bbiq even when he was a ball-hogging chucker, that's what I have yet to see from Jolo.

Juan's handles is a bit suspect since the filoil stint, idk if he could develop into a good ball handler or have a good court vision, same ceiling as Ricci Rivero in those aspects imo. Those iso players we're looking for could've been Bolick or Perez but we all already know what happened. We might have to naturalize Clarkson and sit Kouame out if we can't find the next big name in 2023.

                              • Panopio seems to be a Bolick 2.0 from what I'm seeing but there are moments in the Batang Gilas stint where he just seems to disappear mentally, hopefully this is just adjustment issues with his inferior teammates and not innate. I hope this shortcoming is no longer as prevalent now.
