    SOCIAL MEDIABrandon Ganuelas-Rosser won’t fulfill his dream of suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas after the International Basketball Federation denied his request to play. Coming off a solid showing in the Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh last May, Ganuelas-Rosser wrote the FIBA to have himself cleared “but there’s no luck with that.” Brandon is the […]

    Here is the BGR article.
    The thing with BGR is that:

    - He only arrived here in 2019 (about 4 years ago);
    - He arrived here when he is already 25 years old;
    - He went here to play as a pro, not as a high school or a college player.

    • it's really this simple, for a 12 man offcial roster for official FIBA games here are the requirements

      1. all 12 should have a Philippine (nation representing) passport
      2. For those not born in Philippines or have a dual citizenship , they need a passport issued before 16, and a clearance ID as a local from FIBA ( the reason for this is verification is authenticity of U16 passport
      3. Only 1 player can have a passport over 16 , without an exception letter from sec gen
      4. if there are more than 1 player over 16, they have to present an exception letter or an official FIBA ID classifying them as a local .

      Now for leagues by like B- league , they simply look for that FIBA ID classification as a local ( no questions asked, as it means officially they've met the eligibility as a local FIBA player

        Is there a better example? I only went with BGR because. he is closest one I can find. Other than the rumors of Ange being basically rejected for now here.

            The points against Ange are :
            1. Secured passport as an adult ( 22 ?)
            2. Neither of his parents or grandparents have any connection with the Philippines

            Also the SBP hasn't really put much effort in lobbying to get him exempted, unlike they did for Clarkson

              Yeah and those cases took awhile to be allowed, which is why I am doubting this can be done in like 5 years.

                Also note as a dual citizen (fil forigner) with a passport before 16 years old , it is not automatic one will secure a FIBA ID with local classification. their names still have to be submitted to FIBA to be issued that ID as a local ( this is the FIBA clearance i'm talking about not other types
                I agree on Fiba ID but Wright doesn't need a Fiba clearance as he has already have an ID years ago before he signs with B. League. So why include him in this discussion. According to an agent, you just need to state the Fiba Id in the application form and not in Fiba Clearance.

                • Of course we also have fil foreigners who while they got passport after 16 , played for Batang Gilas , I can count at least 4 already.

                    I feel Greg woild have been exempted earlier , but SBP never had a need to file an application earlier, for awhile SBP leadership had a broken relationship with him when he joined the PBA

                      Yeah, I really don't mind if Kouame has yet attain local status now but SBP and PBA should be prudent enough to know that Ange is about to enter his 8th year of residency here. Instead of giving special concession to allow him to play in the PBA as a local, they just let him go in Europe.

                      Per Philips, no doubt, he will end up in the PBA and I am very confident that he will be eventually classified as a local.

                      I am also confident that Zave Lucero, 10 years from now, can be classified as a local.

                        Only because I litterarally was involved with securing his clearance when he was being secured to play for Gilas senior. So I'm aware of the requirements asked then

                        FIBA ID as a local is actually the proof that one is cleared by FIBA. This is the document presented to prove clearance. In Wright's case Barrios at the time was the one who provided us the ID to present.

                        • There really seems to be a relationship with the number of residency years required with the age one established residency, essentially the younger residency is established the less years required.
                          which totally makes sense , as it is a testament to one's formative years being mainly from the country one is representing

                          I would say if one establish residency at 18 yrs old and passport, after 5 years the player will likely exempted , of course if applied for by federation

                            Yeah, I hope if we win gold in the Asian Games, the SBP/PBA will reward Ange with local status in the league or at the very least allow him to play despite height. I doubt but one can dream.

                            • Kouame no issues on being a local, hes got taht pinoy menatlity (nagkakalat na din minsan) hahah. Although again goving him lo al exemption give him a lot of implications (not in pba but his eligibility in b league )
                              To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
                              1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

                                But this is where I have gripes with how FIBA looks into things.. Matt Ganuelas Rosser who is his FULL BLOODED BROTHER, is considered a local for one simple fact, he was born here in the Philippines, while his brother brandon in the US.. the rest are pretty much the same circumstance... and yet BGR cannot be exempted as a local and Matt is? He is his freaking brother...

                                FIBA should really sit down and iron out a REAL citizenship rule for this... I do recognize that what they are aiming for is local development and growth of the sport in one country... but can they please give chances to players who are LEGIT citizens/dual citizens of one country and yet cannot represent their country because of these technicalities U16 rule..

                                with globalization as a key component of today's society... doesn't matter na if someone lived or grew up in another country for a better future.. basta LEGIT citizen or dual citizen of that country...
