  • My ideal shooting guards for Gilas in terms of skill set:

    Marcio Lassiter
    & Dondon Hontiveros

Not becoz they are/were the best shooters or scorers during their prime but mainly becoz they are two-way players who were/are good in both offense & defense. I think they are perfect compliments for a go-to-guy type of small forward like a Jordan Clarkson or a Justine Brownlee.

I think a 6-foot-4 Dondon Hontiveros or Marcio Lassiter would easily be a quality wingman in Asian basketball.

Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

    • I say if coach Rajko Toroman's Gilas-1 had players like Kai Sotto, Dwight Ramos, Rayray Parks, Jamie Malonzo, Justin Baltazar, AJ Edu, teams like Iran, China, Jordan, would have made a run for their money. Baka nga lamang pa tayo sa kanila. Imagine Gilas-1 having midget guards & wingmen, a stretch 4 who is barely 6-foot-3 in Mac Baracael. Buti nalang they got PBA reinforcements RDO, Kelly Williams & Jimmy Alapag, yet that team finished 4th in the 2011 FIBA Asia championshp

Long hair always said Gilas didn't ask for his players that is why they don't lend...but they always lend Junemar and Japeth...he could be saying the truth.

Just like now Chot's mind is playing with him again...Balti we like him but he is with the MPBL(my bosses might get angry at me)....i rather be a coward than do what is best for the team and make a simple phone call to Delta and Balti.

Don't believe Long Hair or anyone from SMC if they say, "We have always supported the national team. Its only about SBP requesting us & informing us in advance". We weren't born yesterday.
Yeah, Boss is a big part of the problem too. Supporting only during the 2nd half of the WC windows, and development for FIBA ain't in his cards, if we're looking at what SMC did with Letran. Only PBA players that were developed for FIBA under his tenure were Jamie Malonzo and Scottie Thompson. Plus, he's hired as an adviser to this SBP group.

I'd rather have neither SMC nor Panlilio and Vargas. Pangilinan was a competent SBP President, but his group, no thanks. Like I said, SMC will be thr same shit.

I dont think how Al Chua handled SMC teams, sagip kapatid, biased refereeing, hoarding of bigs in the JF era, is basketball development. I suspect RSA is more a fan of winning than real basketball. Danding spent money but the product on the floor was good basketball and was pretty competitive in international competitions. GSM is all Tim Cone, Al cannot take credit for that. But SMB, with that particular biased finals when Compton called all his timeouts in first few seconds of the game had the hand prints of Al Chua. A team who played its starters 35 to 40 minutes even in the elims. Foul calls that allowed its center to push off driving guards. A team for all its AFC dominance, was spotty with imports and internationally. With its best player always exposed defensively internationally without coddling refs.

Al Chua, along with Kots Leo, basically determined the play style and playing weight. That is not good basketball. It was bully basketball that was exposed internationally. Chua is more an operator that pours in money to make sure his boss’s teams win by hook or crook than a program director that ensures the long term development of his players and teams.

The fact that Junemar against all logic is still contributing now despite breaking his leg is no thanks to Chua. The guy was running smoothly and dunking in fast breaks in his first year and playing slightly under 30 minutes. Thanks to Chua and Leo, Junemar played close to 40 minutes every game at a much heavier weight and almost exclusively in the paint. There is no skill or development in that. Thats just bully ball that didn’t work outside our small pond.

Thats alot of accussations do you have evidence? Or even circumstancial info. I wish this forum won't turn out to be tabloid or fake news central. Especially if we are going to accused people without any evidence. No issue of just opinion on a player performance but accusing people of cheating, crime or game manipulation is another thing

Al Chua did great at making SMC teams strong & dominant in the PBA, but at at the great cost in the balance of competition & fair play, which of course isn't good for Philippine basketball.

You're like the resident self-appointed PAO lawyer for everyone here in IBN, the great defender of the "oppressed"... From Kai to Robert to PeeZones to Choke and now Al and SMC.

Are you a frustrated probono lawyer or something? Does being a self-righteous SJW give you satisfaction? Do you have a need for reassurance and a need to show everyone here that you are "above" lowly forum members who are wrong or unfair in what they say?

Fake news central? That's rich. PeeZones was a fake news factory and yet where were you back then? So PeeZones can express his "opinions" but others cannot? You are soooo quick to react on criticisms but we never heard your reaction when people post non-sensical and downright ridiculous garbage. You are just a selective SJW with your own biases no matter how hard you try to portray yourself as a champion of logic, fairness and neutrality.

I was about to say this forum is the wrong place for Snowflakes. But I think this is the best place for self-righteous holier-than-thou people like you who crave reassurance and attention for whatever reason.

My opinion is not without basis. Comptons timeouts happened. GSM and SMB alternating 30 pt blowouts in a 7 game series did happen. Junemar being allowed to extend his hand to impede driving guards did happen. Van Opstal being drafted and barely being played did happen. Heck CS for a time was barely playing for SMB.

I cant prove they were intentional. But I dont think my opinion that they look that they are can be accused as pure invention. Chua handles all SMC teams and what Ive been saying is happening to all teams with varying levels. So saying it could be Chua orchestrating this is not just plain invention. It is his job after all to maximize wins for all SMC teams. While I cant prove all this there are facts from where they were derived.

Going to NCAA. It was a fact that a Letran player made kuot, pardon the Bisaya, Gozums butt. Many were of the opinion that calls were unduly biased to Letran, allowing them to manhandle CSB.

I am not here to accuse Al of crimes. It is just my opinion that I didnt see any basketball development of teams he has handled that I know of. Heck Tanduay had Alvarado, Menk and Hatfield and they managed to lose. It is my opinion that despite all the victories, Al Chua has not really developed any team.

I was young then but many people attest that the team supported by Danding was competitive internationally. It is also a fact that despite dominating the PBA Junemar has been a defensive liability in Fiba. So both Danding and RSA poured money to PH basketball. But while Danding and Ron Jacobs seemingly developed internationally decent players, the most dominant player in SMC history is an international defensive liability.

                        • Hey...if we have a choice or chance hopefully somebody like Delta but apparently we have no choice....either MVP chot or SMC long hair.

Frustrations with Gilas to adapt made me want to try SMC long hair group.

But if we have a choice and a voice of course others will be better like a Noli Eala and Chino Trinidad the original Smart Gilas group

These are private companies supporting a, on its face, non-commercial venture. I am grateful for whatever support comes. As a JF/PBA fan who watched almost all of his PBA games and many GSM games, I just have to calibrate our expectations with long hair.

                            • Positives that I'm seeing so far in Gilas' stint in China:

                              1. AJ Edu, despite multiple serious knee injuries remain as agile, mobile & athletic as ever. And he is holding his own in terms of defense, rebounding & even scoring (Its not like Edu is averaging 15 pts./game. I mean scoring 6 to 10 pts in a15 to 20-minute playing time is already good enough). And at only 23 yrs of age, he is still improving.

                              2. Rhenz Abando - about 3 or 4 years ago, nobody ever thought or expected Abando would be where he is right now - a strong candidate to make it to the Gilas final-12 man roster for the World Cup. Abando is obviously reaping the rewards for the hardwork he has done in polishing his game. From a nobody in Philippine basketball to a good national team material, that is Abando's journey in his basketball career, and this is just the start.

                              3. Jamie Malonzo - after strugglling to get his bearings in the 4th & 5th windows of the qualifiers, Malonzo finally came out of his shell in the 6th window and continue to do well in Gilas recent stint in Europe & now the ongoing pocket tourney in China.

These are the positives that I am seeing with the Gilas pool that Gilas can carryover for the post 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Huwag naman sanang masayang ang mga ito.

I think Abando is a case study of what skill carries over internationally. Both he and Thirdy are undersized SFs. But since his rookie year in UST it was his shooting that differentiated him from Thirdy. Outside shooting more than difficult layups seems to be more transferable to higher competitions.
